This week the GOMtv Classic Quarterfinals are wrapping up with two matches between Free[gm] and Mind as well as Backho and Jangbi. Will Jangbi be able to revenge Stork's loss to Backho in the round of 16? Will the Semifinals contain two TvPs or will there be a PvP?

Tonight's first match is between Free and Mind. Both players are threats in any league they enter, but with the now stale exception of Mind's MSL victory in 2007, neither player has managed to turn that threat into a first place finish. Most recently, Free lost in the 2008 Clubday MSL Semifinals and Mind lost during the 2008 Incruit OSL Quarterfinals. As close as both players are to the top, neither has yet proved they belong in the same breath as Flash, Bisu, Jaedong or Stork. You can bet that they're both hungry to win the GOMtv Classic and confirm they should share the cloud of celebrity which envelops the best of Broodwar's players.
Sharing similar motivations for victory, it is a little tragic-- but fitting-- that they should meet in the Quarterfinals. One will get a step closer to their goal, the other will come up short, disappointing his fans yet again.
Mind has played Free four times in the Proleague, splitting the games 2-2. Their most recent game was on December 2nd, 2008. The 33 minute-long macro war on Colosseum II ended with Mind victorious. However, in their last ten TvPs, Free is doing slightly better than Mind, posting 7 wins and 3 losses to Mind's 6 wins and 4 losses. Free also hasn't been losing games he's expected to win, something Mind can't claim... Although Mind's beaten some excellent Protoss in the last few months-- including Kal, Jangbi and Free-- he's also dropped games to some mediocre Protoss, such as SangHo, Jaehoon and Movie. It's difficult to say who'll come out on top between these two players, but I can't wait to find out.
The second match of the night will be between Jangbi and Backho. Two weeks ago, Backho eliminated Jangbi's teammate and fellow "dragon", Stork. Can he do it again and eliminate Jangbi, or will Jangbi revenge the fall of Stork and slide into the Semifinals? Despite the statistical difference between the two players, the outcome is not clear.
At first glance, you might say that Jangbi is the clear favorite, but despite Stork's praise for his teammate, PvP is Jangbi's weakest matchup. He's barely over .500 with a record of 22-21. Statistically, Backho's PvP is worse (10-14), but he shouldn't be counted out right away. He's pulled off wins versus strong PvP players such as Much, Bisu, and most notably Stork. Of critical importance: these two players have faced one another in a best of three before, the 2008 Ever OSL, where Backho eliminated Jangbi.
To be perfectly frank, Jangbi should win this, but if there ever was a moment in the GOMtv Classic where an upset could be predicted, this'd be it.
