That's a massive, massive result for Axiom-Acer. Coming into this match there was a lot of doubters, myself included, that A-A could finish anywhere other than the bottom. With a convincing win over MVP, they answered those doubts emphatically. Takeaways from tonight:
  • A-A stand a chance against anyone. MVP are last season's finalists, they have the second deepest roster in GSTL after IM. A-A on the other hand had a meagre 6 players to choose from with Crank in the UK, yet 3 of the 4 players they sent out got wins tonight and even Alicia came very close to overcoming Keen. Getting that first win is so important because it proves to themselves and others they are on an equal footing in this league. Prevailing over MVP and DRG in an ace match is a stimpack shot of confidence that can take them a long way.
  • Is it 2011 all over again? It's far too early to draw conclusions, but the evidence is starting to pile up. In the 3 major HotS tournaments we've had so far, zergs (with the exception of players named Life) have been slaughtered while terrans clean out the gibs from their medivac afterburners. In the first two GSTL matches so far, zerg aces Leenock and DRG failed to register a win. Meanwhile, it's difficult not to notice that all of Ax-Acer's wins came from unfancied Terrans, culminating with MMA prevailing over DRG in the ace match in a game that could have been transported straight from 2011. Speaking of that...
  • Holy s*** is MMA back? Again it's way too early to say, but consider that MMA's period of success coincided with a period of terran dominance, with his results dropping off a cliff after the queen patch (alongside those of his race.) With the possibility we may be in a new terran era, could this be the start of MMA's comeback? Could MMA be the greatest "patch-terran" of all time? He certainly looks content to ride the wave on his newly speedboosted toy.
  • Scarlett was smart to sit this one out. DRG and Leenock couldn't take a game. Foreigners went 0-12 at MLG. It's doubtful Scarlett would have taken a game either. It's good for her to keep her powder dry and adapt to HotS while zergs figure out how to win again. In the meantime, and I'm almost sure Wolf didn't mention this, but she's probably a lock for best hair in GSTL.
  • Roaches did not suddenly become good against tanks and marauders. Game 7. DRG's map choice: Whirlwind. Life already showed how to beat terrans in HotS with muta-ling-bane. If there's one player who loves muta-ling-bane more than Life, it's DRG, and Whirlwind is the ideal map for it. So what does DRG do? Build a bunch of roaches! Against MMA's WoL-era marine/marauder/tank? Did I miss the memo? I'm pretty sure roaches have always sucked against marine/marauder/tank. Life won because he played like it was still WoL, but every other zerg seems to have completely forgotten its lessons.
  • A-A have a chance for a playoff spot, but it will still be a huge uphill battle. They did great tonight but they still can't escape facts. They are a new team, they have a tiny roster, they don't have elite players. They beat MVP yes, but they never led until the final game. MMA should've been finished in game 6 after his failed all-in but Monster never pressed his advantage and let MMA back in the game. If Ax-Acer get a playoff spot, that will be as good as winning a trophy.

thank you for the synopsis/analysis i didn't get a chance to watch and all i wanted to hear was MMA in 2011 form? i can't wait for slayers players to return to tip top shape..hoping HotS does the job!

There’s no denying that Terran’s are back in their comfort zone, but I also think MMA is in a better place mentally too. Seems like the dust from the Slayers drama has finally settled and he’s content with his new place with Acer.

Also the fact that FXO and MVP have to play each other next is even better for AXA since it’ll send one of them down even further, but yes, it’s still very early days. Once week two has completed and every team has had a turn then we’ll have a better idea of the situation but the fact is that win was so valuable to AXA in more ways than one.

Sounds like that's what's happening. I saw MMA streaming WOL, his control is so good... he has dominion over his forces. No missclicks, everything lines up, its a pleasure to watch. (even for a noob like me)

Hope Totalbiscuit will bring more fun coverage over team Axiom-Acer.
