Code A RO24: Day Two Recap

By: Waxangel

Taeja and HerO, two players better known for their exploits outside the GSL, earned chances to prove that they could compete with the best in Code S. It was the first time HerO qualified for Code S in his Starcraft II career, and Taeja's second time. Meanwhile, defending Code S champion Jjakji dispensed of Virus to keep his spot, while TvT expert Ryung was victorious over SuperNOva.

(T)SlayerS_Ryung 2 – 0 (T)oGs.SuperNoVa

Despite an unfortunate re-game due to lag, Ryung was still able to flex his TvT muscles and force his way back into Code S. Both games came down to a base-trade situation, but Ryung handled them superbly each time.

Game one saw SuperNova open with heavy pressure off one base, but when it was all said and done, it had stabilized into a fairly even mid-game situation. A base race developed after the armies grew, but Ryung left behind enough defenses to hold off Supernova's force while his own army razed the opponent's base.

Ryung had a slight lead in game two before an untimely disconnect forced a restart, but there was no controversy (beyond the usual 'where's our LAN?' complaints) as Ryung won the re-game. Supernova went for mech while Ryung went for bio and tanks, and the game broke down into a base-trade once more. Ryung's superior mobility and multiple bases located across the map gave him the advantage, and he was able to win handily.

(T)SlayerS_Taeja 2 – 0 (P)ST_Squirtle

Taeja looked like he was going to have a rough start, as Squirtle's blind read of a 1/1/1 and following phoenix counter seemed to give him a massive lead. However, Taeja managed to transition out of his 1/1/1 into a normal Terran composition, and then won the game when a sloppy Squirtle overextended with his colossi and lost them needlessly.

Squirtle attempted to play aggressively in the second game, but he couldn't find a gap in Taeja's armor. First blink stalkers, then DT drops failed, leaving him with no useful defensive tech once Taeja gathered his forces and came knocking.

(T)NSH_Jjakji 2 – 0 (T)ST_Virus

Virus failed to be a challenge for Jjakji, despite the defending champion's poor TvT record. The first game was mech vs mech, with Jjakji's better positioning and execution in the air battle seeing him win convincingly. Jjkaji actually fell behind in the second game as Virus had an almost perfect build order to counter Jjakji's 1/1/1 attack, but he managed to throw away a twenty SCV lead. Jjkaji utilized his army far better than Virus, picking off units and getting free kills for almost no losses on his part. Jjakji's push rolled through Virus with surprising ease, and Virus had only himself to blame.

(P)Liquid`HerO 2 – 0 (T)SlayerS_GanZi

HerO broke into Code S for the first time in his career, clearing the final hurdle with almost ironic ease, considering the difficulty with which he arrived at that point.

The first game saw Ganzi go for a risky fast expand into banshees, where HerO was able to exploit the lack of defenses with only a handful of units. The second game told a similar story, as Ganzi went for a very risky double expansion, which HerO was able to easily defeat with a 4-gate rush.

Games of Note

Jjakji vs Virus, Game Two: A pretty remarkable comeback for Jjakji, considering how far behind he was. Virus had to be complicit as well, of course.

HerO vs Ganzi, Game One: HerO's dedication to kiting with stalkers was pretty entertaining to watch. Frustrating, actually, if you're a Terran player.

Shame for SuperNova, hope he'll still make it through the up and downs. But very happy for HerO to finally have achieved Code S! Now Zenio needs to go back to Code S as well, then followed by the rest of Liquid Korea.

Did anyone remember when Moletrap and Khaldor couldn't figure out why Virus kept unsieging and moving back? I wanted to cry when I heard Khaldor berate Virus for "basically giving up ground that he had the position to keep".

Argg without Wolf, Code A has no analysis. Just two play by play casters who refuse to ladder a bit on the game that they base their entire careers off.

"A pretty remarkable comeback for Jjakji, considering how far behind he was. Virus had to be complicit as well, of course."

Wow that's a quote from Waxangel.

Hey Waxangel, how was Jjakji down, exactly? His supply count was only 10 behind at the most all game long, and he didn't have upgrades but instead had superior tech (raven, banshees) and a higher viking count.
So i'm just curious how even you found him to be behind. Listening to the casters or something?

Laddering won't necessarily help either man. You have to know the game inside and out. Not everyone is going to be able to do that.

Can we please not spoil the games most people are unable to watch live on the headline that appears in big bright white font on the front page? I'm not sure why TL started doing this with the new update to their site but it is very annoying. I don't want to not have to come to this site before I view the most current games.

I am not sure why both casters and recap emphasize how Jjakji was behind. They had similar marine/tank armies, but Jjakji had an overwhelming air advantage and, with only two orbitals on Virus' side, could toy around with his opponent's position at his will. That is pretty much how you win marine/tank battles.

No. It means you need to find a balance.

You think Dan and Nick are right most of the time? Nope. Far from it.

Part of it has to do with the style in which they cast.

Lol how bout actually reading the site changes when they come out instead of calling TL staff dumbasses k? There's a hide spoiler checkmark at the homepage if you don't want the spoilers, but tl wants to be more of a home to esports and sports homes and news sites all have results right after the games finish. Don't whine about progress, especially when they give you means to stop it.

There was a time, as in all time preceeding this morning, that this site didn't spoil just-played GSL games. This morning, apprently, they decided to change teamliquid's defualt setting to Spoil Things. I have since clicked the magic button, but too late. The dumb ass is the one who decided that team liquid should default to spoil, rather than the opposite.

They gave ample notice of the spoiler change. I honestly love the change, I come here to catch up on the latest SC2 news, knowing full well spoilers are going to be present be it on the homepage or in the forums, through accident or intention. I'm quite impressed they have made the hide spoilers option to begin with, just shows how much they care about the people who view the website.

hero's micro was amazing. i was surprised when ganzi went for an even more risky opener in the second game but i guess he figured hero would try to get an early expo out instead of punish his opening with a 4 gate.

I was intended on watching these game this morning. Team Liquid has ruined that. Change your headline Dumbasses.

Why not just watch the games first then? Instead of coming to an "ESPORTS" website. Who is the dumbass?

There was a time, as in all time preceeding this morning, that this site didn't spoil just-played GSL games. This morning, apprently, they decided to change teamliquid's defualt setting to Spoil Things. I have since clicked the magic button, but too late. The dumb ass is the one who decided that team liquid should default to spoil, rather than the opposite.

They gave warning.

Kinda sad for GanZi, he obviously didn't play his A games he's a much better player than what he showed vs HerO. As for TaeJa and Ryung I'm so happy they made it back to Code S SlayerS fighting !

AFTER I HAVE SEEN THE GAMES

Spoilers on the front page? Jjakkji pulls trough? Please, please, please TL.... don't detoriate in the direction of reddit! Please, don't spoil my fun :S

I like the current spoil style of TL. Just like the sports website. Kudos TL. IF you do';t want to be spoiled, don't come to TL.
Marine is Terran strongest unit but it might be Terran's biggest weakness. Bcos of Marine so OP, other Terran unit regrettably have to be weak..

I'm gonna point this out for you guys a little more specifically since its hard just saying "click the hide spoilers" button. I get it. TL.net is difficult to use, as we are an esports community. I've constructed a step by step visual guide to hiding spoilers on TL. It's a little technical but I think it should solve your problem.

Nice mature, condescending tone. Always approriate when you are refusing to listen to what has been said. Clicking the button is quite easy, but the round of games whose results were first spoiled were an exciting group of games, and many of us, having not read an article the week before about site changes, had to pay those games as a price. The button needed to have been clicked on to begin with, as the default.

That's a fair point. I happen to visit TL every day and so for me I noticed this-- but the average forumgoer isn't constantly checking in and could have easily missed it. I'll make sure to be less snarky in the future. Sorry
