Great article! Never got two big into BW (was a War3 player), but ive always enjoyed following the scene.
About blizzard suing KeSPA: IMO Bliz doenst give a damn about its IP rights. They havent cared for years now, and it wouldnt make sense to care so much now, given the age of BW.
They are doing this to shut down/cripple the BW scene, in favor of SC2. If SC2 is to become a huge success in competitive gaming, it MUST succeed in Korea. In order to speed this up, BW has to go. When BW is gone (or crippled as it may be), we will see more pros and sponsors switching to SC2, and it turn Bliz can exploit its IP rights from an earlier date.
Given KeSPA's position as the controlling body for BW in Korea, it is the natural target, as it is less likely to switch quickly to SC2. Gretech/GOMTV on the other hand, was the perfect choice, given that it no longer had any kind of vested interest in BW (as far as I know?).
Sad as it is, that is business, and Bliz is making the right move if it seeks to maximize shareholder return (which, consequently, is the goal of any public company).
my 2Cents, and apologies if this has been postulated before.
wtf is Blizzard's problem? Blizzard knows full well that SC is a national sport in Korea. Shutting them down is like shutting down the NBA in America. I expect OGN and MBC to go on broadcasting their games, and if it goes to the courts I expect Blizzard to lose.
