Calling somebody retarded town or mafia will probably only net you a warning when your target is town. Otherwise hosts probably read over it.
When I try to game hosts I always lose but I might try this in 6 months.

The town play here is getting better and better. The scum game is getting worse and worse. It is even becoming the 'standard' that players are just not trying when scum and it becomes so fucking obvious that they are scum and town respectively. This is a real issue IMO. I honestly can't consider someone a 'good' player if you just trash your scum play in favor of your town play. Like the people I consider 'good' are all good at town and scum, maybe not equally but at least competent Marv: Better as scum than town VE: known for his scum game in his prime Palmar: God as town and good as scum Rayn: god at town and okay as scum Ace: Good at both Bugs: Good at both etc. This new culture of playing town well and not trying when scum really, really bothers me. I don't like playing mafia because there's nothing interesting about being mafia. I know the alignments of every player in the game already, there's nothing motivating me to read into their posts for anything more than content. I also know that all the reasons I would be calling someone mafia are bad and wrong, which makes my posts feel constructed and unconvincing to me. Plus, the point of the game is to demonize the players that we think are mafia so that town will lynch them, which is a wholly un-fun experience regardless of your alignment. Getting lynched sucks, and being mafia and knowing that they are right sucks even more. In addendum, you also PLAY town MORE than you play mafia, on average. Each side has skills that need developing, and while some overlap, a lot of them do not. Simply by virtue of playing town more, you will see the balance of talent skewed toward the town players. I would also argue that mafia is harder to play in general, which only exacerbates the problem. Furthermore, the better you get at town, the more your scumgame will suffer. Marv is a great town player, and I think he's not all that difficult to spot as mafia if you've played with him as much as I have. Palmar is allowed to live as mafia because 50% of his towngames are useless trash filters. Rayn is allowed to live as mafia because his language barrier makes picking out his tonal qualities a difficult task, and he's not good enough at raw reads on some players to actually rely on his misreading of someone as alignment indicative. Ace and Bugs I would now say are anywhere near their level of scumplay when they are town. I have seen Ace flail as town too many times when he came back for that to be true, and Bugs' last towngame was a rage-fest of yelling at other townies. VE I think has gone through many iterations of how he plays the game, which makes it difficult to read him at times. He's an emotional player regardless of his alignment, which makes giving him a townread for certain things a dangerous proposition. Honestly, the qualities that make someone a CLEAR townie are extremely difficult to emulate convincingly as mafia for any extended period of time. Once you have a core group of players in a community like this one that can all play town well and recognize each other's town play quickly, the game becomes much more simple for town, and you see streaks of games where town wholly stomps. Mafia absolutely NEEDS an infusion of new players to thrive as a game. And right now, we are losing players faster than we are gaining them. If you want the quality of games to improve on the forum, we need to focus on getting more new players, and structuring ourselves to better accommodate and teach them. Right now, newbie games are an isolated experience that seem rather unstructured even with the coaching system intact. Attrition seems high even from game to game, and we are struggling mightily to fill even small newbie setups. Either we increase our recruiting efforts here on TL (which I see as a community that is not experiencing much growth), or we decide to reach out to other websites (and likewise play on those forums ourselves). Either way we do it, we should focus more on the community aspect. We're doing fine being inclusive among the players that play now, but it seems like there is too high of a barrier of entry at the moment. We should be more friendly to new players in general, which does not seem is the case. It has been said many times, but coming into your first TL game (non-newbie) and being derided the whole time for being bad and wrong is not a fun experience, yet I see it happening all the time to this day. In the Foundation game, for example, the DM players were all repeatedly insulted throughout the game, and the only player who is still signing up for games is Rob. If we could improve our inclusivity, we could bring in new players, which would freshen the game up and create a more balanced atmosphere. After all, it is the players that make the game, and a more diverse set of players leads to more diverse talent balances, and more diverse games which are more enjoyable for everyone.

We could ask kitaman27 which newbie games were succesful at keeping players around and which weren't and then try find the good traits and encourage them in future newbie games. Gonna PM him about that. I also never thought that the newbie game requirements were perfect. That your first game has to be with a bunch of newbies might make the community seem a little snobbish and with effort, a first gamer can be just as good as a a veteran (at least as good as some veterans). Maybe having newbies in normal games and just being nice to them will be better at keeping newbies playing than having them play with a other newbies who don't actually represent the "core" community?

No but the absence of a specific rule against playing a normal game as your first game is very different from it actually being universally accepted and maybe even encouraged. Dunno, I just remember that CPHoya was kind of poked out of a normal game just recently and I thought that was a little silly, I'd much rather have him play with more integrated community members than having him play with people who don't actually represent us. Of course I absolutely respect the host decision to ask CPHoya to play a newbie game instead.
