So I think it's time we actually had a talk about this before we start harassing moderators. Plexa did an awesome job as the moderator on our forum getting people in on a regular basis, etc. But now that he is gone we have 30+ people backed up in the sign up thread and I have been PMing Admin's for around 5 days and the only person who ever responded was ITW, which told me he can't actually do anything and I needed to PM riptide.
I understand that the forum admins/mods have other shit to do, which is why I feel we need our own moderator. Currently insane is about to end and XXXVIII still has slots and people trying to get access so that they may sign up, but at this rate it's not going to happen in a timely fashion.
I was going to say we should nominate people and see who the majority of us want to push to become the moderator. But that wouldn't be fair to have a vote and not just look at what someone has done. So I want to push Qatol to be our Moderator. I just want some feedback before we make a post in website feedback.

Qatol deserves to be a mod, I fully endorse this campaign. Who do we have to harass...I mean nicely ask... to get this to happen?
It would be great to have him be the mod with full powers in name as well as fact (I mean his practically the mod here anyway ^_^)

Well what would happen is that RoL/Random person #1 would tell you he/she wants to start a game with smurf accounts. You would then open up a thread in the MiR Forum explaining what will be happening (RoL/#1 making smurf accounts for a game). After leaving it open for like 2 or 3 days I'm pretty sure most of the mods will have seen it and then at that time you can tell RoL/#1 it's ok for him to start doing stuff and that way problems will be less likely to occur.
Also, this makes it so that the mods can't just be like "You're a dumbass, communicate more" when clearly RoL PMed ITW about it already and also posted a post in the sign up thread about it so he did communicate. Not to mention the whole BM/QS situation could have been a bit less messy. Also, since we just opened up signups and a flood of newbies will be coming in, I feel like we need some sort of actual mod to deal with the unforeseeable problems that might arise.
Also I'm sure sometimes someone will do something stupid outside the mafia forum that gets them temp banned and then they mess up a game. I remember someone did it once as Red Mafia so that he could be inactive for a few days and divert heat off of himself. The mod would make them unbanned on the mafia forums itself can't they? Just like how people can be banned from just one section of the site?
At the end of the day I'd rather have someone who actually interacts with the people in the subforum moderating everything involving it than someone sent from above.

Qatol, as our abusive father who only wants the best for us, what do you think about having the ability to grant/deny mafia forum privileges? I've noticed that you generally want to maintain the banlist without being the "final say" on controversies... if you got an icon, would you be willing to be the final say? My sense is that is exactly what you want to avoid.
There's no doubt in my mind that Qatol is qualified, it's just a question of whether that's what he wants and what TL Mafia actually needs. In fact, even with plexa around the mafia /in list thread often had a sizable queue; ITW will eventually take care of it; mafia xxxviii is almost full and already has a plethora of newer players. On the other hand, it would be damn nice to take care of mafia perm bans and thread privileges in-house...

I dont think we need to consider what Qatol wants, we will just foist the modship upon him! 
Seriously now though, Qatol even as a mod can take into account everyones opinions as he often does in the ban thread, its just a case of being the arbiter of such decisions, which he practically already is. Addressing your second point, I *know* that with Qatol as a mod he would take care of the people requesting access regularly, and while XXXVIII is full theres no reason to deny all these new people admittance/delay their entrance (hell if we get a flood of 8-9 of them I'll host a mini to keep them entertained or something). Basically with Qatol as a mod we would have someone who we know understands what goes on here, and is on our side in the mod's camp.
Qatol gets shit done.

The fact that not a single person that saw BrownBear's advertisement in the Sports & Games Forums was able to join the game without already having forum permission kind of defeated the purpose of advertising to begin with. I would certainly trust any judgment related decisions Qatol would make in regards to the mafia forums, but of course if he prefers not to acquire any extra work or responsibilities then that is definitely understandable.

what a bullshit reason...clearly there are time sensitive things that we can't wait around for hot_bid to take care of when he gets around to it. The whole advertising for XXXVIII and yet not one of the new people requesting access was able to sign up for XXXVIII clearly shows we need someone inhouse. RoL's experimental game got delayed 3-4 days because of the confusion of mods not paying attention and then they blame RoL for the mess up. What's he suppose to do? PM every single mod that he was making smurfs for a mafia game?
it's up to Qatol I guess, if he's willing to be mafia mod I'm sure we'd all stand behind him

For many years has the TL Mafia sub-forum withered away, alone and deserted by those who should protect us. Only after much difficulty and struggle were we able to summon a moderator to aid us against the internal forces that oppressed and abated us, yet after their aid they once again left, leaving us despondent,
When one of ours was required to bring several smurfs into our homestead for the purpose of a great and glorious task, he requested permission from the mods and received it, yet because of a lack of communication, other mods banned him and put the game on indefinite hold. Had we, the mafia forums, had one of our own amongst the ranks of the all mighty ones we might have been able to prevent such a terrible accident, one that caused much suffering and pain to all the involved.
Of late our staunchest ally in the terrifying regions of the outer forums, Plexa, left us forever, and now it is impossible for us to allow people into the greatness of the Mafia forum without much dalliance. Despite our calls for others to join us and the request of some people to be allowed to visit us, the mods dallied and have so far not seen it in their interest to allow these people into the embrace of the mafia forums.
To regulate and controls we, the mafia forums have requested that Qatol, perhaps the greatest of the mafiates be given power much like the mods, so that he could defend our interests against internal and external threats. So that he could open the gates that allow those who desire access to enter and see the greatness of the Mafia forum. Yup Qatol for sure. There are enough of us that we should be able to demand a mod. We're the most organized subforum and we've been operating for a while. Everytime this gets brought up the mods just say "PM us if you need anything" but this clearly doesn't work as recent events have shown.
Qatol is perfect for this.
I have a lot more reasons why we need a mod and why Qatol is perfect for it but I'm on my phone so I'll post more when I get home.

A couple of things. Before making this I asked Qatol, he said he was fine with it. Secondly, ITW can't actually add people apparently. It's why we need a dedicated moderator.

My position is as follows:
I wouldn't mind being made a mod if the TL staff think it is warranted.
But I'm going to take the position that I think they will probably take:
What would you have me do that I can't (and don't) do already?
I could let people into the Mafia Forum on a more regular basis (if Moderators can even do that - I'm guessing it takes Administrator access to do this and there's no way we're getting our own Admin). I could handle the ~5 bans per year which result in loss of mafia forum viewing rights. I guess I could also take a more prominent role in the Ban List as far as resolving the easy calls (such as QuickStriker's attempt to avoid his ban) goes. I could update the OPs of active games to reflect changes in the Day/Night cycle (though this was more useful/important when we didn't have hosts use a rigid 48/24 cycle). And it would be nice to have an "All" button so I can point people to ban-related material more easily. But is that enough to really justify a moderator? What exactly would you have me do on a regular basis here that I don't/can't already do?
I prefer to have the big ban-related policy decisions decided by the forum as a group. I think the standards reflect what everyone as a whole thinks is acceptable, which is really how I believe this forum should be run. If people don't buy into the rules, they tend to not follow them, which results in chaos. We could just kick people who don't buy into my rules out of the mafia forum, but I'm worried that might erode the player base unacceptably. The easiest way to get people to buy into the rules is for them to have a voice in the creation of those rules, or at least to make the rules transparent enough that people understand (and support!) the logic behind the rules.
As far as RoL's situation goes, it is unfortunate, but I think he handled it in the wrong way. I really think he should have just PMed the list of accounts he wanted given mafia forum access to ITW. He knew that the TL moderators have problems with smurfs, and that seems like it would have been a simpler way of getting everyone access. Given the way he handled it, I don't think the situation would have turned out any differently if I was a moderator unless I happened to be watching the Mod Reports forum at the time and reacted to the situation before ETT.
Finally, remember that the TL staff (the Administrators, Moderators, and Banlings) by and large do not know me. I have had conversations with some of the staff members who actively played mafia here (semioldguy, Bockit, IntoTheWow, Plexa, mikeymoo) but that's about it. There are a few other staff members (FakeSteve, TheMango, Harem, Kennigit, Rage, Empyrean, SonuvBob) who have probably heard of me but may or may not remember who I am. Beyond that, they simply have never encountered me because I probably have ~200 posts outside of the mafia forum (not counting the mafia games which were moved). I think it is extremely unlikely that they would give staff powers to someone they have never heard of and know nothing about, regardless of how people on this forum feel.

Your a good candidate to us however your gonna have a hard time convincing the higher ups to give someone who is relatively unknown outside of the mafia section much authority.

Which means the focus should probably be on getting someone like ITW promoted to Admin or getting another Admin more interested in this forum if you want people added more often.

I'm pretty sure it's coded into TL this way. However, there are exceptions for certain powers--I can write Power Rank, and that's done through the Admin Panel. But I'm not an admin/mod, obviously.
Also I honestly don't think a moderator is needed for in-section stuff. The only thing they'd be applicable towards is banning people / checking for smurfs, and bans are done based on the diplomatic system right now and I tend to hand off smurfs for checks.

yeah i really dont think an admin is extremely important to us right now. we are still a relatively small and manageable amount of people. Also its worth adding that there are a large number of people here that have access to admin IRC and admin sections of the forum so we are not in any danger of being unheard if a problem arises. basically having an admin here would be convenient for us and inconvenient for the admins. you do the math.

If it's up the sawmill it can be in yonkers, same if it's up the sprain. Which is westchester county. So from the city you can take the bus/train there.

MTA makes it easy to go anywhere from the city to Putnam/Westchester within an hour.

Sorry to go back on topic but...if you want Qatol to be mafia mod, this isn't not the right campaign for it. As was said, there simply isn't enough need for a dedicated mafia mod. But TL is certainly in need of more skilled mods/banlings; they trouble they have is finding the right ones for the job. There's no reason why Qatol simply couldn't be a mod who also regulates the mafia forum, instead of a strictly mafia forum mod, if he was willing. I doubt there's a single non-staff TL user who has had the opportunity to illustrate on TL their capability as a mod as Qatol, not to mention the countless hours behind the scenes of resolving disputes quietly and helping with game setups etc. He may not have the connections but his track record is right out in the open, as he has been the de facto mafia moderator for quite some time now and the reaction, as we have seen, is quite good.

I could probably handle it as long as I don't start until May (after my finals are over). And I would be willing to take the plunge but only if it would actually benefit this forum (and not just the sc2 forum).

To be serious though, I don't think it's worth it at all if the only way to go about it is to give Qatol more work. Most of the problems we have can't be fixed by a mod anyway and need admin powers so it's not like being a banling will bring about substantial benefits to the mafia forum, it just taxes Qatol more than anything else. If you want to be a banling though, I'm sure we'd all vouch for your awesome modding abilities and experience.

I would imagine that it would be easier for a mod to get the attention of the people who can actually admit new users to the mafia forum. Of course, I don't know how things actually run higher up on TL, but I know that I at least pay more attentions to PMs from mods than PMs from, say, RoL.

I think in the instance of setting up smurf games, we should just PM hot_bid and other admins like a week ahead of time asking for confirmation. Once confirmation is given we can start the process. It'll slow the process down but it's a problem that's solvable. The new users thing I dunno how we can fix that though.
