To what end exactly ? As much as I like where Japan is going in mens football they havent really done anything yet, nor will they for a while.
Are we seriously putting weight on performance in the olympics for the mens game ?
No one genuinely cares about the olympics except teams who have literally no scope elsewhere and the odd international under performer ala Brazil or Argentina (and not even that anymore) who wants to get some momentum by winning something . Case in point team GB, although being the host its rather reasonable that they would try harder.
The Womens tournament is a different thing though. That matters and that to me has probably been at a relative level a higher quality tournament then the mens. Most of the latter is like watching MLS.

No one = Europe. The other continents do care quite a bit about this event.

And all of the best teams are from.... adding the fact that its mostly a junior tournament with lousy team prep. Its just not worth mentioning. Its the perfect opportunity for the Mexico' s and the Nigeria's of the world to get some silverware because everyone is bad.
How many people give a shit that Leo Messi has an olympic gold while Zidane doesnt ? Yeah exactly.

Senegalese keeper must be furious. Two gigantic blunders by his defence in extended time.
