It's been like this for a while tbh. Ever since Jarvan came out, Irelia went mainstream, and Shen got nerfed, true tanks are pretty much obsolete and tanky dps reign supreme. The only true tanks you see now are Alistar, because he doesn't need farm to tank, Amumu, because his initiation is amongst the best and he can jungle (altho tbh, I personally feel Amumu's a nuker  ).
As a side note, Maokai's not really a tank. He's more of a tanky caster dps that just simply isn't popular yet.

Hahah, the casters are especially bad about this but I think people aren't understanding what makes tanks important and what makes them not important.
In the CLG vs M game for instance there was a point where CLG simply couldn't press their advantage because they had no tank to FORCE a fight. Instead due to having no tank all they could really do was hope for a mistake, and M played relatively flawless, allowing them to come back based off CLG's mistakes.
You don't need a tank if you're willing to sit back, farm, play safe, and capitalize on mistakes.
You need a tank if you want to push it at any sort of decent timing.
In solo queue it's often better to have a tank because the longer the game goes, the more likely it is that YOUR team will make a bitter mistake. But it's not necessary, because you can win just off the opponents' mistakes.
