I think they capture it pretty well in Iron Chef.

Actually that is a very good reason to think someone is a shitty actor. Tom Hanks would be a terrible actor if he continued to play a naive adult like in that movie with the dog, Splash and Big. But luckily for him he has versatility which is a very very important quality for good actors to have. Keanu has tried to go out of his comfort zone before (that movie with Charlize Theron) but he has never been able to do it with much success imo.
Ill say this again, Morgan Freeman does not play the token black man by any fucking respects. Have you seen Seven? Shawshank is set in an era where he had to act like a southern black man... oh wait he is one. Just because he is black and good at what he does doesnt mean he plays the token black guy. Does Denzel play the token black guy? Come on now, seriously?

morgan freeman and tom hanks are both very poor actors now a days...
also i mean denzel washington, freeman, definitely not good actors to mention in terms of versatility.
denzel plays the same character in every movie, freeman basically just plays the mentor/meta-narrator

You dont judge an actor by crappy filler movies they do. Tom Hanks hasnt been in anything big in a few years... Both of them are legendary actors who could be considered among the best of our time.

So any actor who has a talent doing one role shouldn't pursue it? An actors job is to act. If they can act the shit out of one role, who is anyone to deny that or lessen it by saying that they are a shitty actor for not having range. Is George Clooney a shitty actor? My whole point is that Keanu is not a bad actor. He's not a great actor, but he's what I said ' not bad '.
Shawshank is set in Maine. The original character is white, and Irish. The film producers casted Morgan Freeman [ according to imdb ] because of his demeanor and authoritative presence. Hence my point earlier of old/wise/leader/black or a combination.

Why do you keep saying that role actors are good yet using examples of actors who have at least some versatility, if not a good amount of it. Clooney has gone from romantic, to comedy, to action and done a decent job at each of them. Hell he was easily the best character on ER, that whole show went downhill after him. Role actors pursue one role because they can make money of it, that doesnt mean they are talented and can bring a character to life in other scenarios.
You are mistaking success for talent, they are very separate.

Who else would have played the part besides keanu ? Some no name low life who just looks like him.
Movie is gonna suck just like the cartoon anyways, so don't worry.
|
there is no way Keanu can pull this off. No way.
I don't even mind the guy really, but this part is way over his head.

dang this thread is just stuffed to the brim with opinions

So you're saying Clooney doesn't play a calm/collected persona in the majority of his roles? Whatever your answer I'm done trying to discuss this since neither of us are gonna change our mind. It just sucks bebop is turning into live action. Looks like I'll just resort to using clever short 1-4 line posts since the more text you put out the higher the chance of being misunderstood.

Maybe Bill S. Preston Esq. would make a better Spike than Ted Theodore Logan?
edit: Really though, Keanu Reeves has that cockiness and sort of detached way about him that fits pretty well with Spike. At least they didn't announce Shia-fucking-Labeouf

I thought comic based movies were a crime(at least 90% of them) but this anime thing is way worse. What's next? Ranma? Although I think Fist of the North Star could be a hell of a movie.

Don't listen to Charlie he gives fast & furious 2 thumbs up.

Man there's a guy at my school who looks exactly like Spike, he has the hair, the clothes, the demeanor and the face. When I first saw that guy I was immediately like "oh shit." They should find that guy and cast him.

FLCL dubbed is way better than with subs.
On topic: A Cowboy Bebop live action movie from Hollywood will be terrible, even disregarding the bizarre decision to cast Keanu as Spike (Keanu plays stoic well enough, but Spike does not take himself as seriously as Keanu always does). I don't see how live acting could reproduce the unique style of fighting (both hand to hand and spaceship to spaceship) without being another cheesy overproduced popcorn flick, a la 300, Sin City, The Spirit, Wanted, etc, and the hyper-cool film noir style would probably fare even worse than the action.
What a fucking terrible decision. It would be nice to be proven wrong, though.

Keanu looks a lot like Spike IMO =S
