[edit] On second thought I think it was set up so Bush did not fail at everything he attempted and has something positive to be remembered with. Look at his reflex. He knows the guy is going to throw before it happens. They just hired someone to throw it. At least this is a more credible conspiracy then some others.

Does anyone think this might have been staged? If so, for what reason? What would Bush have to gain from such an encounter? Did he have the speech planned out after the event? publicity stunt?

If I'm not mistaken, the two biggest insults in Middle Eastern culture are to call someone a dog (many Muslims consider dogs to be unclean) and to show someone the soles of your feet (it's like saying you're walking all over them with contempt). It's in no way similar to showing someone the middle finger while driving. I think Bush should at least have acknowledged the depth of the insults... maybe said something along the lines of understanding that he must have serious grievances to do something so insulting, yet he was appreciative that in this era of free speech and democracy in Iraq, it was handled in a relatively non-violent and non-threatening way. Just shrugging it off may not go down well with Iraqis and other Middle Easterners watching the incident. lol no The worst thing you can do here is say Fuck your Mom or Fuck your country and I think thats about the same for evreyplace in the world. But showing someone the sole of your shows means disrespect because it means you are lower than the ground that I stand on. But this incident is pretty awesome, gosu dodging by Bush.

It's because the guy stood up and yelled something before he threw the shoe. And of course Bush's god like reaction time.
