I didnt read this thread but you should really see the BBC documentary "18 til I die" about the 18th street gang in El Salvador. It's probably the best documentary I've ever seen. And it's pretty disturbing how these kids who look like the ones you see walking home from school talking about and killing people without batting an eyelash.

They even have their own jails for when they get busted, it's like vacation to them because the only people in the jail are their gangmates, so they just party and smoke weed.
