I would try levis, 511, don't be afraid of the name skinny jean it is not at and emo skinny jean, its just a slim fit jean made for smaller people. The next step up would be the 513 then 514. Finally the 520, and 521. If I were you I'd go to a store and start with the 511, and work your way up from there. If you can't find one of the options in your size you can always order online from a place with a good return policy like zappos.

As far as shirts go, look for "sport shits" opposed to "dress shirts" because as a general rule sport shirts are meant to be worn untucked and dress shirts are meant to be tucked. Check out the lands-end canvas sale, some good stuff, and nice return policy.

@Statis, I like US style but I'm a traditionalist. I could see the Korean style working for some people, as long as you realize it is much more casual, and don't try to dress it up or anything, but for jeans like you say, I think either one could work.

@Jonte, read the tag but most likely your jacket is dry clean only, if it is don't try anything fancy just bring it in and get it dry cleaned. The same applies to your jacket and dress pants. As far as removing hair and other things between cleaning get yourself a lint roller. As far as how often to get your clothes dry cleaned, only as needed, I think most people do it more often then needed, dry cleaning is hard on clothes, so you should really do it only when hanging the clothes for 24 hours wont remove the smells anymore or there are stains.

just thought i'd add onto this post. i have personal experience with all of those levis fits and as far as "skinnyness" goes, it'd probably go something like this: 511 (skinniest) -> 520/521 (very similar. basically 514 thighs with a 511 ankle) -> 513 -> 514. as far as "fit" goes (how good they look), my personal preference would be 521 (best) -> 511 -> 513 -> 514 -> 520 (only putting this one at the end because it's the one i'm least experienced with). i've never seen 514's look great on anyone. to me, they're the type of jean for a guy who wants to look okay without worrying too much, if that makes sense.

I was looking around yesterday to find a chart of the fitsizing of levis pants, found this:

that pic seems a bit old because it doesn't have the 513s, 520s, or 521s, but it seems to be pretty spot on. I like how the 514s are recommended for every body type... that would seem to support my theory that they can look okay on anyone but they don't look great on anyone.

also lol at the idea of skinny athletic dudes wearing baggier jeans to get a "fuller look." try that and you'll just end up looking like you're wearing jeans that aren't cut for you at all.

I wouldn't recommend the 569 to anyone. They are huge. Was that picture produced by Levi's? If so I just think its marketing trying to say they have a jean for everyone

@ DEN1ED obviously a quality well made shoe from a reputable company albeit slightly less known then Allen Edmonds or Florsheim, but maybe thats something youd like not having the same shoe as everyone else. I have never worn any of their shoes, but I am sure you wouldnt be disappointed as long as you get a well fitting shoe. What model were you thinking?

Im looking at these. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bruno-magli-ryback-oxford/3211147?origin=category

I really like the look but the rubber sole has me hesitant.

they're not bad. I like the shape of the shoe but not a huge fan of how the toe is slightly differently colored. I feel like it calls attention to the toe of the shoe in a negative way, similar to how square toes are ugly. also I think you can do a lot better price wise. I work at a shoe store (Designer Shoe Warehouse) and we have a loooooooooot of shoes very similar to that for a lot less money.

I'd think hard about spending over $200 on a rubber-soled shoe. I doubt that sole can be replaced, which means that, in terms of durability/longevity, those are an expensive pair of sneakers. also, a rubber sole like that (with athletic-type treads) is probably not formal enough to wear with a suit.

I agree. I think 100 would be my max for rubber soled shoes. I agree that those are some nice looking casual shoes though. I think theyd look great with jeans but I also think you could find something similar for less.

agreed. they wear pretty quickly. You may wanna go a little higher price and get a better shoe for the longevity.

Also

DONT BUY KENNETH COLE SHOES! (or possibly anything from them)
just bought a pair of shoes wore them twice and the sole starts peeling. piece of shit.

I wear all black. Black 550s, black T, black docs, black socks, black underwear, black leather jacket (in winter) and you'd be surprised places I get into. Seems black is neutral and I get into high end clubs reguardless. I havnt started working professionally yet but I think I go all black suits, black tie and white shirt.

Hey, dudes, I'm a tall and very thin guy. I got some v-neck sweaters over the holidays, which don't exactly accent my good points. What are some general tips for dudes who shouldn't wear v-necks but have 'em anyway? lol. I'll post pics in a bit; going to shower since I've been out all day and I'm tired and look gross. I'll elaborate more then.

Edit: fuck it, I'll do it tomorrow. Today. After I sleep. Whatever.

Unless your profession is secret service or MIB agent you will look like a funeral director.

@stick, spread collar under the v-neck will look much much better than the standard point collar.

So, I bought about three pairs of chino's over the week and some nicer looking upper clothing as well. OH man are these chinos comfy as hell and they look great on me! :O

What I am stuck on currently is shoes. I don't know what to get. I looked at some Wolverine 1000 mile boots, tried them on and liked them, the indy boot was great too but the Red Wing's were very stiff compared to the two other boots. They also come with much steeper price tags, but understandable due to quality/materials used.

So my question is once again is what are some great shoes that can work with jeans/chinos in the $200-250 range. I know some I think have pointed out that there really is no good fill between the $100-300 range of shoes.

So can anyone recommend me some shoes that are great for jeans/chino/every day wear?

Going to have to bookmark this thread, I love it haha.

Maybe you guys could help me out, I'm in college, senior year about to graduate etc. I don't actually know a ton about dressing nicely (although those posts in the OP were really insightful, I'm definitely keeping those around for when I actually have money), but I just know that I want to.

In particular, I like accessories, a lot. I like watches, pocket watches, vests (are those considered accessories?), hats (hats are the big one), ties, shoes, everything.

I don't have much money (let's say, around $1,000 total to spend) and it's not for any sort of job, I just really..really enjoy dressing nicely (Hat + Vest is the bare minimum given proper weather).

I'm about 5'8 and weigh approximately 140-150 pounds (I'm short T_T;; ).

Anyways, at the moment I've just bought some cheaper things at places like Macy's and random hat stores that have things that I like the look of, but I want to invest into something to get me started, it's very likely I'll be working somewhere where I'll need to wear a suit (and if I'm not I'm going to be wearing a suit anyways because..I'd..rather be in a suit than anything else). I have one blazer where the sleeves are long on me (if I close my fists you can't see my hands if I'm standing upright) which sucks because I think (I'm probably wrong) the rest of it fits me nicely, I'd look into local tailors but I bought it at H&M and it's not like it's the nicest thing on earth.

How much would a nicer hat cost me? Are there online stores for something like that? Same deal with vests..

I want to have a full suit (including vest/tie/hat) in the near future just to wear, maybe in some different colors to mix it up, is this even reasonably achievable with a budget of around $1,000? Is it even worth getting a cheap jacket tailored?

Random questions as I have to fun off to class, will look forward to reading this whole thread in the future.

A highly recommended, good mid-$100 range work boots are LL Bean Katadhins. You can't go wrong with the 1000 miles though. Red Wings are stiff at first but will break in eventually at the cost of a few blisters. Just don't expect to wear any of these in snow as they don't protect you from the cold.

Another personally recommended boots are Clark's Desert Boots. This plus raw denim jeans and you won't get the girls off ya . Also Steve McQueen wore chinos with desert boots and he's a badass. You want to be badass, don't you?
