A picture taken of the exact moment this boy hears for the first time. I remember reading that what he heard was a symphony or something along those lines. Love this picture.

not quite as deep as many of these other picture, but i think it's a nice story

i agree on the story, but for those who don't know what it is. It is a father helping his olympian son get to the finish line.

Out of all the sad pictures with no happy endings in this thread, this bittersweet picture really stands out to me. I hope other people read this too.

I don't believe that lining up for a library in China thing for a second. Call me racist, but I was born in China and raised in the west. Why would a library ever have a line? Does it not have enough space? Then the students would know that and not waste precious study time waiting unless they had to: eg something was left out like that their tests would take place in that library.

If they were really that devoted to studying, they'd be studying with a ski mask and gloves outside while waiting for the library instead of standing around.

The vitruvian man was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. It hangs in my basement and every time I see this painting and stare at it I just get inspired.

Da Vinci believed that people could reach the corners of the physical and the metaphysical world. That's what the hands reaching the square and circle represent. Not only that, this is a self portrait of the most intelligent man to ever exist in human history. I like how he methodically plans out how to draw himself with those lines everywhere.

All these are original colour photographs. No, the dates aren't wrong. They were made by taking a series of photos through different filters and then overlaying them with another set of filters. All taken by this guy.

I was really touched/impressed by most pictures in this thread.
Here are a few of the pictures that have a big impact on me:

2 pictures of James Dean from his role in Rebel without a cause. It offers a social commentary on the moral decay of American youth, critique parental style, and explores the differences and conflicts between generations in the 1950's. The movie and especially James Dean pierces your soul. He died in a car crash 1 month before the release of the movie.

The epitome of the 60's captured in this picture from the movie Easy rider. Easy Rider explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise and fall of the hippie movement. I always feel sad and empty after watching this movie.

The last person crossing the border from East to West Berlin. He was guarding the border at the spot where the last piece of the Berlin wall would be erected only minutes later.

And the fall of the wall in 1989. I remember it very well watching television when it happened. It's something that will always stay with me.

The ISS. Our jumping board to a new and hopefully bright future. That we may never forget to aspire the highest and continue to set new goals and to reach for the stars.

To end my post a piece of artwork from Grzegorz Kmin titled Messiah.
It really pierces my soul everytime I look at it and can be found on his page on http://www.epilogue.net.

A lot of the pictures in this thread need explanations to give context.

In this picture, do you see that small dot around the mid-left of the picture, between the thicker rings and the outer one? That is Earth as seen from Saturn.

I always loved that picture , here is a little edited version and the reason why I love it so much ;

Despite the brutality the totalitarian government of Iran used in the aftermath of the rigged presidential election (2009-2010) in murdering, injuring and imprisoning the defenseless people of Iran and harshly cracking down on the Green Movement, the Foreign Ministry of Islamic Republic urged the Egyptian government not to use violence against their people and “concede” to their demands.
