Well, last Christmas i got a broom. that's it. Christmas sure has changed since i was a kid (and was spoiled rotten). So I'd like a new one... one that changes volume depending on how hard you press the key. | ||

There lives another! I'm so proud. Yes, it's not the fabled old school damascus, but the appearance mimics it -- hence the popular usage of damascus to describe the folded exterior. I didn't want to baffle anyone by getting into the specifics of the production method, haha. A few custom makers hand-fold different types of steel together in order to arrive at a pattern welded steel with superior wear-resistance, and they make the entire blade out of that new steel, rather than cladding it as in the santoku above. Apparently the different steels in the pattern welded steel wear at different rates, which naturally leads to tiny micro-serrations that allow the blade to stay sharp -- not as sharp as without the serrations, but sharp -- longer. It's all very interesting. I'm no metallurgist, though. I just love the Japanese carbon steels. They get sharp so, so easily and stay that way for a long time when given the proper heat treatment.
