That said, they've probably been through many editorial changes since I last paid any attention to them.

I guess when you risk fading into complete irrelevance, you start pandering to the mainstream. :s

Got to agree that list is awful

Seems to be a list compiled from fan votes, as opposed to being made from a few notable critics who have a good understanding of game history. I don't think that's true. I mean if it were fan votes and fan votes alone, pretty sure one of the newer CoDs would be in the top 3. Or maybe something like Halo 3. And you certainly wouldn't see Deus Ex (the original apparently) anywhere near the top 10.
Yeah, then it's a "mainstream" player base vote. What I mean by that is the players who shun CoD because insulting CoD and hating on EA is the thing to do right now, but at the same time praise games like Skyrim as the best ever, which is sadly not very accurate either. Sadly for games, I think it's a lot harder to appreciate old classics the same way you can do with movies. I can watch Godfather and still enjoy the hell out of it, good plot and acting is timeless. Outdated graphics from older games won't be appreciated by the newer generation at all.

Anyway, the list is simply awful.

Meh, just big names and media popularity

The WarZ is a worthless piece of garbage bordering on being a scam (in that they pretended the game was complete and ready to be released despite everything indicating otherwise). DayZ is not terrible and certainly not comparable to the aforementioned in that regard, but it is still very much a work in progress and that entails a lot of bugs.

Also agree, a list for "of all time" would look very different. For recent releases I could probably agree to some of the rankings, but too many successors over their predecessors.
Civ 5 is in there, but there isn't even Civ 4. Fifa 13, really? ARMA2 up that high seems odd too Skyrim > Oblivion > Morrowind, I suppose many would disagree with that as well Don't really know what Hotline Miami is doing on that list too, even though it was fun, but top 100 of all time? Nah There isn't even any GTA title, which would probably deserve a spot over a lot of those currently on the list
I wonder what a top 100 would look like if the TL community voted for it

MENDOOOOZAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

Masq? No mention of the original GTA 1/2? Skyrim number 1? No wolf 3d, Myst etc ? What kind of shitlist is this?
|
What the fuck. PEGGLE is on that list. Seriously?
|
Do I win anything if I have never played any of the top 10?
Checking now, where HOMM games are on that list...
|
Seems like an inflammatory list meant more to get people talking than actually stand on its own two feet.

Yeah, right, another "recent hot games which we will pass over as greatest games ever" list.
Those guys apparently don't realize that, for example, Doom I was the game that basically won for PC's the whole war against Amiga computers for the #1 home-computer gaming platform (besides, it was awesome FPS shooter on it's own).
1. Starcraft: Brood War 2. Doom I 3. UFO: Enemy Unknown 4. Diablo II 5. Warcraft III 6. Close Combat III 7. Populous 8. Counter-Strike 9. Age of Empires I 10. The Sims

Most likely.
Although now that it's been moved to Sports & Games, the thread is probably going to die very soon. XD

Conversely, TL has a much more forgiving view of other genres. I know a lot of TLers look favorably on Bioware or Bethesda RPGs when there are similarly elitist hardcore CRPG communities that essentially view those games the same way TLers might judge, say, the CnC series.

I mean, "best" is probably meant to entail "most fun to play right now", and not "most influential" meaning historical significance isn't meant to be a defining factor in choosing the games on the list.
That said, I'm still probably more likely to replay a lot of the predecessors to these games than the incarnations that got rated higher. I'm just going to go out on a limb and say you probably don't regularly replay Doom 1 at this point.

In my opinion, I'd probably have to give the #1 spot to world of warcraft. You can argue it hasn't been so good in a while, but man, that game was addictingly fun when you first played, I don't think anyone can deny that. It's also got such a broad appeal and ever since no MMO has come close. Kinda even killed off MMOs altogether by saying nothing will be as good and I've already played it for so many years so why bother.

Well it depends. Do you perceive this as a "best games" list or as a "most addicting" list?

It really was a revolutionary game, and it's been going strong for so many years. Just my opinion of course.
