Sigh, 30 min in was miles ahead as witch in the BLAMT race, walk into 8 corpses and a detonation totem just instant kills me, the range on those things is way to high

Got gibbed by Brutus on my level 57 Ele cleaver. I think I'm done with this game for a while; two level 50+ characters dead in two nights. Right now, I feel like I don't know how Merciless Brutus is possible. I had absolutely no way to react because two hits came in such quick succession: a pull and a slam. I think--but I'm not sure--I had a Decoy active and in the other direction from me when he did it. I got pulled into a wall and went from full to dead in under a second. I'm really pissed off right now.

Welp. Skele totem and suddenly he becomes much much easier imo, if he doesn't desync that is.

Also preemptively move if he does a slam animation and he is not aggro'd by your totem. Optimally you should have IR by the time you hit brutus and have a granite flask running if you get hit. You should really be able to survive a brutus hit on merciless (even though there's no reason to ever get hit). Best way to kill him on ele-cleave is to use decoy totem / viper strike. Just decoy him and viper while the totem has agro, run away and repeat.

You got grappled/pulled by Brutus... when its quite easy to avoid... If your angry, you should be angry at yourself...
I guess taking a break isn't a bad idea tho (or playing smaller sessions)... I mean if you're trying to faceroll-tank brutus on merciless, it might be because you're to exhausted to actually play the game. Also, Skeleton totem also make this fight quite trivial as previously said. Best of luck on your next character.

Have a few flasks handy. As soon as you get hooked you should pop at least a granite (preferably with additional armour % in one of its lines) and maybe a quicksilver to run away even faster. Each can be used twice before you have to TP/refresh the flasks. Even if you get slammed, you should have 20k+ armour from popping just the granite and that should be enough to save you even in merciless. Vaal is a whole different story though...

As others mentioned, using a spell totem with summon skeletons is a great way of fighting against bosses like Brutus.

The melee splash gem is really nice, 160% mana, -20% to main target, 50% splash in a really nice aoe(really hard to tell how big it is). The only problem is that you have to hit something for it to splash, which no actual splash skills require. Still made my dualist much stronger(he was camping before the weavers den till today ).

I only attacked him while Decoy was active, and I tried to only move in while he was attacking the totem. I'm quite sure Decoy was in the other direction, it was active, but he ignored it and hit me twice in under a second. The first hit took me to sub-20%. I had Iron Reflexes and tried to prepop my Ironskin Granite if I thought he might hit me. I'm not sure if desync was an issue. Also, when I sought to engage him, I tried to do it only with a 64% run speed Quicksilver ticking so I could dart in and out.

The Skeleton Totem sounds like a fantastic idea; I'll have to try it next time. Also, what is the minimum level for Merciless Brutus? I was practically facerolling Ledge at 57 before I decided to progress.

Someone should test how life on hit functions with this. For Example, when using Heavy Strike, Melee Splash and Life on Hit (at 40 life per hit, for ease of calculation), and you hit one target and hit an additional two:

1. Do you get 150% * 40 = 60 health for the primary target? Or 130% * 40 = 52?
2. Do you get no health from splashing? Do you get 50% * 40 = 20 per enemy? Do you get 150% * 50% * 40 = 30 health per enemy? Or do you get another full 60 health per enemy (the health you gain when hitting the primary target again)?
3. In total, the result of adding melee splash and life on hit could get you as little 52 health on a swing or as much as 180 health on a swing (with 110-120 being more like what I'd expect). Anyone know how these stack?

I'd test it myself, but my melee char has way too much regen to be able to tell numbers specifically.

Currently, when you use Heavy Strike with Life on Hit attached (at 40 health per hit), you get back 150% * 40 = 60 (according to the patch notes, anyway), while when you use Ground Slam with Life on HIt, you get 70% * 40 = 28 life per target hit. But there's no real precedent for Life on Hit with an AoE attack that has a single primary target (is there?).

I have a level 88 Templar. Level 80 in PoE is very different from level 80 in D2. I could get lvl 80 in about 2 hours in D2 doing uber runs.

Level 88 in PoE is more like level 94-95 in D2, level 80 in PoE is like high 80s in D2 in terms of time investment.

Also, for some builds, you really don't hit the top til late 80s. My DPS tripled from 80-88 as opposed to prior to 80.

Haven't tested the melee splash gem yet, same for the multi strike one. But powercharges on crit is awesome if you have a decent crit chance. For that gem i'll take 2 extra power charge nodes.

From what i've read from the official gem feedback forums the melee splash game has a pretty terrible AoE radius, like it only hits what is in melee range. People over there say it's a bit weak, dunno. Multi strike on the other hand seems like it receives some more positive comments.

Kripp tested on stream and increased AoE support works with melee splash (as does Conc Effect) so somewhere something like that should make melee splash better than it looks (hopefully).

He didn't, but if you're playing the game to reach maximum level and don't enjoy grinding then I'm not sure why you're playing in the first place. Getting discouraged by exp rates in a game where levels barely matter at all is quite silly to me. Nothing in the game requires that high of a level and end game is entirely gear dependent. You can start mapping in the low 60s if you have the gear for it and if your gear sucks then you're still going to get owned even if you're level 75.

Comparing uber runs to PoE leveling is also pretty funny. Do you think anybody knew how to level quickly like that when D2 first came out? What if GGG adds ubers so you can speed level years down the road? You can already level very quickly with twink gear.

The problem with multi strike and things like cyclone or flicker strike is that you are committed to all 3 "movements" and you can't control the target of the last 2 so you may end up in suicide territory without being able to cancel if you see it coming.

However, Blood rage (for frenzy charges) + flicker strike (using the frenzy charges to remove cooldown) with multi strike support does look ridiculous (although arguably stupid and unfun).

Actually that is how it looked before Flicker Strike was nerfed with cooldown. Multistrike just returned Flicker old glory.
