I really don't see how one of the best selling anime of all time is niche, unless you mean in the sense that anime itself is niche. I was assured that it was niche by Toad, because none of the people he knows IRL have ever heard of it. I said it's not Mainstream or well known for people who only watch Pokemon, Naruto and stuff like that when we had a discussion about wether it's Anime-beginner friendly.
I'd say the meaning here is a bit different.

how much it sells might be a good estimation for how popular it is in Japan.
I still think stuff like Death Note is way more popular in the West among casuals. Heck even stuff like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online is probably more well known to a guy who has watched less than (let's take a number out of nowhere) 2-4 series of anime with half of them being something out of DBZ/Naruto/Pokemon
|
And what are you basing this assumption on that its way less popular in the west?
|
I've not once heard someone say the name Bakemonogatari outside TL-ADT. Like you mentioned above, most of my friends who watched less that ~3 animes in their lifetime however do know what OnePiece/Naruto/DBZ/Pokemon/Attack on Titan/Sword Art Online is. Whenever I'm reading stuff about anime on other messageboards or whereever it's always the same "you should watch Death Note!" or "try out Attack on Titan! Totally not a kiddy show!!!"
Don't even know why you're making a big deal out of it. Yes it's only my own experience about it. I never claimed to be some allknowing guy who wrote a thesis about this. Just said that in my experience Bakemongatari isn't well known within a circle of people who are new to anime.

In the west, I think, anything that has not been on Toonami is "not mainstream". (Possibly things that are also shown on TV here, although not that abomination of Card Captor Sakura that was on the WB.)
Then there are people that are somewhat aware, who have probably seen a few other series.
But he's right. Monogatari is not as well known as (obviously, in my opinion) it should be. It's like noting that in the west Hayate is not that well known, despite being very popular. (I don't know about Hayate, actually, except that I didn't know about it until I moved and started to watch anime almost exclusively because I can't get cable.)

In other news I'm up to 5-B in OwC. Felt 4 was a bit average. It had some nice Shinjou moments but I wasn't too fond of all the air dragon combat. Maybe if it was animated it would be way cooler. Overall enjoying the series quite a bit and haven't found it any more confusing than Horizon. In fact it seems far more straight forward than Horizon. There's also more incredibly lewd scenes so confused why it didn't get animated instead of horizon. I can just imagine Shinjou stealing the hearts of all. 5th gear just has a boring concept. It doesn't let them do crazy stuff like 1st or 2nd. Heo is also pretty lackluster compared to all the other gear-centric characters so far.
At least Harakawa is better than Hiba.
Also, most seem to enjoy the Sf- Itaru dynamic a lot. So do I - but I honestly like Ooshiro - #8 even more. I enjoy the sillyness.
Kawakami has another series besides Horizon and OnC on baka-tsuki now, Hexennacht. Takes place in the obstacle era and seems like it could be fun.

Yes Reddit, the the fiefdom of repressed white power nerds is the winner when it comes to settling disagreements.

Even though personal experience is not a good way to judge things, it's probably the only way to get a rough idea of how things are if you have no other option at hand. Here I would generally agree on the obvservation that most people that don't know anime or ony watched a handful of them, such as Pokemon, One Piece etc., don't know Monogatari. Sure that can be said for almost every anime out there but it's usually the ones that Toad mentioned.
To add my own experience, IRL people that watched a handful of anime all know the usual big three as well as Dragon Ball, Fairy Tail, AoT, SAO, Conan. Then it ends or they know a handful of other shows they looked in at random. Even people that have watched a whole lot of other anime (friends or people I know by games etc. I regularly talk to about anime) never mentioned Monogatari once. I never read about Monogatari on any message board that I frequent aside from TL/MAL. Even on MAL it isn't brought up that often and is very rarely recommended in the recommendation section. The only exception was one user on a german guild wars forum that had Shinobu as an avatar. What I frequently see on other message boards are those mentioned above and then things like Death Note, Geass, Steins;Gate, Full Metal Alchemist. Sure people bring up some "unknown" (and with unknown I mean things like DtB, Tatami Galaxy) up on other message boards but those are mostly single-mentions. One other thing I noticed IRL is that older people that don't watch anime at all know classic movies like Akira, GitS, Appleseed etc. while younger ones don't. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are known by some.
For fun I checked the ArcheAge forum I frequented last year because I remembered people over there mentioned all kinds of anime. Monogatari got not mentioned once but even anime like Serial Experiments Lain got mentioned multiple times.
TL;DR: While it's not based on investigations with statistical validation just the observation makes it seem like that Monogatari doesn't belong to the small category of anime that is well known among people in the west that don't watch a whole lot of anime or no anime at all.

Amen. Automations are the greatest. Well aside from Shinjou.

I want an honest answer:
How often did you rewatch naked Kuro with insufficient nipplecensorship rubbing her breasts against Illya's while frenchkissing her?

Honestly? After the 5th time it starts hurting and blanks start happening so I take a 12 hour break then start again.
+ Show Spoiler +I didn't rewatch it you sick bastard. That was way too lewd for lolis man. Just keep it at the panty shots and be done with it.

I think what he posted in spoilers is meant to throw us off. But you can't mind game me, Numy. gg

K-ON!! ep25, finally a decent episode again.
//oh my god, the latest chapter of One Punch Man was godlike. + Show Spoiler +I couldn't stop grinning once he showed the list. Then the big guy showed up and never managed to hit Saitama while he was holding the list in front of his face and I just bursted out laughing. And then the end when he lost his wig... what a cliffhanger.

Haha, Kuusen is so funny. I hope the tournament will be good.
