It's varied and good. I will go and commit the ultimate sin: FMA the original. Brotherhood is the inferior version. How...? FMA the original was better early on, but after Lab 5 it went downhill. Not to mention the ending was retarded. On the other hand, after Lab 5 in Brotherhood, it only got better, and that early part was only like 10 or so out of like 60.

Fear not i won't ask for any recommendations, because i got a lot of that while skimming through this thread, however almost all of the titles i encountered, do (according to wikipedia^^) exist in form of a manga as well as anime.
Personally i would probably prefer reading a manga (i found mirai nikki in this thread and i thank you for that gem guys), but most of you guys seem to rather watch an anime (hence the thread title i guess). So what do you think is the better choice and why?
Some examples of titles i found and might consider (a selection based solely on their number of appereances in this thread, i have no clue what they are about^^):
Steins;gate clannad fate/zero madoka
So my question is: manga or anime? (if thats a stupid question you just can't hear anymore, which I could imagine, I appologize^^)
Um yeah, those recommendations... for someone with zero anime experience... no. (except maybe Clannad or Fate/Zero)
Full Metal Achemist: Brotherhood (FMA:B) is probably the best gateway anime. I'd follow that up with other Shounen works that aren't too heavy, like Ao no Exorcist (blue exorcist), Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star, or Macross Frontier. If you want longer series, probably start out with the standard stuff, Naruto, Bleach or Dragon Ball Z Kai.
The issues I have with the ones people recommend in your list: Steins;Gate is too... otaku reference heavy. It's a great show (one of the best I've ever seen, actually the best show I've ever seen) in terms of character development, plot, pacing and overall execution, but if you don't know otaku culture, @ch, comiket, and some of the other anime conventions it makes fun of or parodies, you can miss out on a lot of the humor, ironies, references and links that the series establishes.
Madoka is a deconstruction of a genre. Generally deconstructions are not a good place to start.
Clannad is not bad as a gateway anime, it's certainly a different breed if action-oriented shows put you off, and you are looking for more of a romance/comedy/drama.
Fate/Zero is a prequel, and assumes that you have some knowledge from the visual novel it is based off of (or at least the anime that aired). Not having that knowledge takes a bit away from it, but I've judged that is it by and far good enough to stand on it's own. Be aware they won't explain a lot of the systems at work, since you are expected to have prior knowledge, but it's still good fun, and very well written and paced.
Also to note, of those, Steins;gate and Clannad were originally Visual Novels (VNs), Fate/Zero was a novel (well light novel technically) and Madoka an anime-original show. None of them were 'based' on manga, although each has probably been adapted to manga at some point and time.
My recommendation is always to go with the medium you are most comfortable with, or enjoy the most. Each medium has it's advantages and disadvantages. Manga is easier to digest, and can be done in quick sessions. Anime can take advantage of pacing, integrating music, and actual animation in action scenes, which can bring a work to life. Novels tend to provide better character perspective, as you get more than just dialog as you do in anime, and dialog and thought bubbles as you do in manga.
Each is different and unique, and provides a unique perspective. Certain techniques are better executed in particular mediums, and do not translate well. If someone is attempting to follow the 'letter' of a work, then poor executions that do not (or perhaps due to difference in medium, cannot) convey the same feelings and reactions in their viewers can cause issues. This is why people generally say it is best to view the original work, but I've found that it really more depends on how good a particular team is at adapting the working to the medium. All that said, I again encourage you to simply use the medium you are the most comfortable with. For me, that is anime, followed by novels, then lastly by manga.

yeaaa,, dont think I want either. Seems more of a service ploy. What was wrong with the cutesy airhead ? It works just fine. Seems like a bad attempt at milking it at first glance.

I just watched the Steins;Gate extra episode and: + Show Spoiler +HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGH KURISU MOE The writing and pacing for the episode is perfect as always, and the flashbacks flow extremely well compared to other shows that have run an episode of this type. But seriously, dat Kurisu. Only tsundere character I've seen in a long time that hasn't made me close the video. Also dat ending cutoff, they are so troll :<
Also if you get subs, Commie went gg with their translations lol. They aren't off but seriously, だめだこいつ・・・早くなんとかしないと -> 'Epic Fail. Saged, reported, called the cops' ಠ_ಠ

If she is a redesign of that black haired girl also pictured there, I'd call it an improvement.

Well yeah but this is someone who has zero anime experience. He has nothing to compare it to so he won't realize how bad it is and the time investment is a lot less than the VN. I mean, the whole point is just to get maximum enjoyment out of F/Z.
S;G OVA was really good. Felt awesome recognizing Staples Center in LA Kurisu too good as usual. @Taku: LOL yeah I kept thinking I had gg subs. Tsundere-> "hot and cold"
@Delwack: just wanted to note that nobody actually recommended him those titles. he just chose them himself cause we mentioned them a lot in here.

today is thursday! which means we get the conclusion of Kaoru arc in Amagami SS+ can't wait for the release.

I saw the S;G ova this morning right after GSL right before leaving for work.
It was good, although I think we all suspected (and knew) what was going to happen, it's good to have closure. All the little references to just about everything that they built up during the anime was hilarious too, with + Show Spoiler + everyone Cosplaying as promised, finally meeting Suzuha's mother, exploiting the perfect mesh of all the timelines.
|
I also really enjoyed the S;G OVA, especially since it stayed away from everything I hated from this damn story (time travel).
Was funny from beginning to the end.

changes the nuances of the show is all. Im not saying it wont be good. Just not sure if itll appeal to the reasons the original was nice to me anyway. Plenty of shows with hot chicks.
edit: After a second glance its practically a new show and a new character with the same name for the most part, total reboot will probably check it out.

Plenty of shows with hot chicks, true. But I have a thing for blonde and white haired chicks. And while there are plenty of both those types in anime, there aren't very many hot white haired chicks with glasses in the shows I've watched. So I approve of the design.

Watched S;G OVA.
It was amusing and was nice to see some fun things they joked about in the series previously. Never liked Kurisu though so it wasn't anything amagawdniiiiiice but I can see why everyone else thought it was awesome.

Yeah, I know, but I'm simply curious since you posted an Ika Musume picture, which implies you have watched the show and liked it, right?
