Didn't actually think of that. As in not putting the pieces together. Shanks was on Raftel once already. That means that A: there is either some kind of obstacle that Roger(or his ship Oro Jackson) could pass but Shanks(or his ship) can't or that B: Shanks thinks/knows he is not able to inherit Roger's legacy.
One obvious obstacle would probably be properly reading poneglyphs. But I also remember Roger, in a flashback, offering to tell Whitebeard how to get to Raftel. Don't quote me on the Roger flashback though. On the other hand Shanks thinking he is not(yet) good enough leads to quite the straightforward options that we all heard already. The Will of D. or plainly lacking the power needed.
At least i'ts certain that Roger's treasure is not a matter of "go to that one plain island and pick it up"
It would be sad if the truth of the matter is you actually needed to be "whole" to complete One Piece.
This is a dumb speculation as it would make it too shallow, but if Roger's sickness played a factor in completing One Piece, then maybe Shanks losing his arm also accounts why he hasn't been back to Raftel (as far as we know)
He has become crazy strong (most likely) but that doesn't seem to be enough.
Maybe there is some sort of gate or mechanism you would need to open (by yourself) to get to "One Piece". Or you need to get there in "one piece" to fulfill the requirements.
Also curious is why Buggy hasn't shown any interest/knowledge about Raftel or returning to it? If it was some great big secret that only a few know about, I think that should have played a bit on his character's reactions, especially when finding out about Luffy and his intentions.
Unless he slept through the whole thing when they were there?

Roger's sickness kept him from completing One Piece because he wouldn't be able to last long enough to carry out his mission of reviving the Ancient Weapons and destroying the reverse mountain which would indecently create All Blue since the all the worlds oceans including the Grand Line would converge. Shanks probably cant reach Raftel because he simply isnt strong enough and its not because he is missing an arm.
As for Buggy, he is only interested in gold and there is no gold involved in the whole mess with the Void Century and the One Piece mission.
Shanks' dream was to "slowly travel the world with a group of trustworthy nakama". His dream was never to find One Piece or become Pirate King.
Think about Luffy saying he'll quit becoming PK if Rayleigh tells them where One Piece is. There's no adventure, in Luffy's opinion, of going after a treasure through cheating. Shanks could easily feel the same way, hence he doesn't care about One Piece. He already knows where it is.
Have we EVER heard Shanks say that he will become the pirate king? Not really. That guy just doesn't care.
True Shanks doesn't care and the same can be said about Whitebeard and maybe that's why they didn't go.. or maybe they did and we don't know..
But the thing is that it has something to do with the "Will of D", the poneglyphs and the void century! Because if it isn't Whitebeard's talk with Blackbeard would make no sense and Roger would have lied to Whitebeard wich also doesn't see legit!
I would kill to know all of this.. at the same time we are following Luffy's adventure and it's good keep on following it :D
The World Government knows his name is Gol D. Roger. They changed it to keep the "D." a secret.
Also Buggy is a predictable one. He only cares for gold and keeping himself safe. Crossing the entire Grand Line to get to Raftel? Pretty sure Buggy even fears going into the second half, much less traveling through the entire second half.

no they didnt it was like 90% certainty just a mistake since no other D's have been hidden
whats even the point in hiding the D? the D itself isnt important, whats important is what the person with D does

I'm sorry but I can't read this without giggling like a little girl lol

No they don't know his name. They dont have any reason to hide it anyway.
I'm pretty sure they know his proper name given they investigate all people with D's in there name to check lineage. I believe it was said during Ace's Flashback in the war but not 100% certain.

"Based on small information of relieable information from Cipher Pol, we checked all newborns and their mothers but we couldn't find you."
and its from next episode
Marine A: You sure that its this island? Marine B: People saw Roger acting like he wasnt a pirate here, as if he were a father. Marine A: Find all babies who are due within 10 months of his going to jail. All pregnant woman, kill all mothers who are suspicious.
I can't find the page in manga but i think it's common knowledge that it was the marines who started to call him "Gold Roger" instead of "Gol D. Roger"
This is is OP wikia: "Near his death, Roger had a final meeting with Whitebeard, as he told him about the nickname the government gave him, Gold Roger, and the secret of the Will of the D." - I don't think it's about the "Pirate King" but of the D.
Well even in the link above roger asked if Whitebeard knew" what the marines have started calling him". I'm convinced the marines knew of his "D." and hid it from the world. If anyone who knew about the Void century or polygraphy things knew the strongest man alive and ruler of the seas was a D. I can imagine it being trouble for the WG.
here's the link with whitebeard and roger Pretty damn obvious that, if nothing else, Roger never called himself 'Gold Roger'. The 'recently' part is also obviously referring to government coverup tactics, given that they know all about the Will of D and want to make it disappear from the world (see Ohara events).

so whos this miraculous person who both knows so much about the void century yet cant tell the name of the man who sailed around the world?
the Dr. witch knew his real name and i think brook did too, anyone who lived in rogers era knew all about his D
and why not hide anyone else's D if there so concerned? Luffy and Ace have there D right on there poster, so does dragon i think, so there obviously not concerned about someone knowing the truth about the D and seeking them out based solely on an initial, having a D doesnt seem too insanely rare so its not like it matters of someone knows whos a D and who isnt because thats no basis to tell whos going to shake the world and who isnt
i think if they did purposely hide his D its only to make him look weaker like how they killed him in the weakest ocean
On February 18 2014 01:10 shell wrote: Dude we don't know why.. but Oda says so.. Is he wrong?
tehy probably only hid it to make Roger look weak so the next generation doesnt know he was chosen by the will of D or whoever it is that hands them out
He did manage to get to Raftael and back, considering he was dying and couldn't complete the "mission" he gave himselt in to be executed and in the same time, inspire a generation of adventurers to try and get to Raftael, hoping that a man like him, with the Will of D. and with strengh to go all the way, manage to win that race and acomplish what he couldn't!
It's probably like you say, they tried to take out his "D." just so that people wouldn't tie things together..
- Get to Raftel - One Piece - Will of D. (Void century + Ancient weapons + Ancient Kingdom)
This is all speculation but is the most plausible imo
