It was The Grand Budapest Hotel in spiderman form basically. I don't know how else to describe it. No one is ever felt to be in any real danger and the conflict isn't very serious or tolling, they just made a light fluff comedic spiderman, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'd still say the green goblin one is better but this was better then the garfield movies by far

I'm going to see it today. But I think that what you describe as a problem (no real danger, light comedy) is actually what Spiderman is all about. He's a local (as in - not nationwide/worldwide acting) hero who mostly stops people from robbing banks, mugging others and most of his antagonists are pretty much common criminals with some high-end gear. I'm actually glad that for once they didn't go for some citywide destruction or a plot to end the world - especially that it's supposed to be the early stages of Spiderman, when he's just a kid and learning the superhero ropes.

Will review it some more after I've seen it, but the premise looks like exactly what Spiderman needed (definitely not another origin story).

then you will enjoy it a lot. Due to it being from marvel it stays very true to the comics, its definitely a movie directed towards the hardcore spiderman fans with an attempt to reel in the average moviegoer with comedy.

Like i said, not necessarily a problem just people will go in with different expectations after the last 2 renditions which are super serious.

I did like it a lot. I think the general story was very Spidermany (not the greatest fan of Spiderman, but I can roll with it) and they got it just right. My wife also enjoyed it thoroughly and she's not a big fan of comics or movies based on them.

Some of the stronger points of the movie:
  • The villain was amazing. Keaton was great as Vulture and it was exactly the right kind of antagonist for the wall crawler. His motivation was convincing and well done, it also tied in nicely to the other movies in the MCU.
  • I like how they've decided (finally) to completely forgo the origin story of the protagonist and move it a bit forward to when he's finding his place in the world.
  • The comedy was OK. Not too obnoxious or distracting and pretty clever at times (still, a bit too safe in my opinion but that seems to be Marvel's MO).
  • The plot twists - it's been quite a while since a movie caught me like that and surprised me entirely. This one managed to get me at least 2-3 times. Mad props.

The weaker points would mostly be stuff related to my personal tastes and nitpicking so I won't even mention it (with exception of some Spidey CGI which just looked bad). Overall a very enjoyable flick that managed to retain the MCU movie quality while still bringing in some freshness with it. I can definitely recommend it.

Finally got around to watch Logan, was utterly disappointed though. It wasn’t a bad movie, but I really don’t get the praise it got from all of my friends. I might had wrong expectations, but everyone was telling me how insightful it was supposed to be and how there would be a great character development but there really wasn’t, at least nothing out of the ordinary for an action movie. I also wasn’t a big fan how they only hinted at all the backstory stuff, what happened to the mutants etc. I managed to get the most of it but had to read up on some of it. If the movie had either focused a bit more on the backstory surrounding the current events or spend more time for logans change of character it would have been a good movie, but without it there isn’t much that separates it from a standard action movie. Better than the previous wolverinemovies, but that isn’t really an accomplishment. The thing that set it the most apart from your run of the mill action movie for me was probably the nostalgic feeling of wolverine and seeing him once again having to wrestle with the past.

Not bad, not good but okay. Didn’t regret watching it, but wouldn’t have missed much if I didn’t.

Dunkirk

A fine movie. Music, visual and sound effects are great (and those usually make or break a war movie). The atmosphere is really deep, Nolan managed to capture fear, anxiety and anticipation quite brilliantly. It's also cut in a rather peculiar way but it works for it. I really liked how it was made to speak more through picture than words (there's very little dialogue in this) and characters were no less engaging because of that.

I can definitely recommend this movie.

If you want a bit longer review (that I agree with 100%):

While I'm usually a big fan of those timeline jump cuts in movies, I must say I got quickly annoyed with it in Dunkirk.
Watched it with my mother, who had no historic background. She was totally lost after 30 minutes.

Also the annoying "music" which is supposed to keep the tension up through the film sounds cool in the trailer but man, after 80 minutes.....

My biggest problem with the movie is, that it doesn't really show the scale of what happened in that week.

6/10 ok movie to watch,i guess but I had hoped for much more.

Captain Phillips (2013) Starring Tom Hanks

The movie is based on the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009. It's about a ship that gets Hijacked but pirates in the Indian Ocean. I really enjoyed this movie and I'm a big fan of Tom Hanks as well. Definitely worth a watch if you have the time.

I didn't find the jumps too bad here. It did get a bit confusing timeline-wise, but nothing crazy.

Good lord was that painful. They really should have let the down time be more down time. Obviously they were going for that payoff moment, but it was just too long and too painful.

Yeah, it's a feature film, not a documentary, though.

Nah, I thought Dunkirk was completely incredible. The music was great. The jump cuts were easy to understand imo and meant a very creative timeline.

Sure, but it was like seeing the opening scene of Private Ryan in the Normandy with only 20 men.

In Dunkirk the biggest shot is like 200 men standing on a pier and 10 small boats coming in (vs 400k troops and 800 ships), just doesn't do it justice imo.

I don't think comedy is an attempt to reel people in here. Authentic Spiderman is funny, its just that the previous movies were inauthentic.

Ah, got you. I thought you meant more in terms of the troops movements and such. It did surprise me that there were so few people on the beaches with 300k getting evacuated.

Well, they only showed part of the entire beach in the movie (the mole). Would be hard to show 400k people without any CGI involved (and this movie was all real practical effects, real vehicles, real people).

Split - I feel like this movie could have used a good editor. The tension in the opening scene is top-notch, but the rest of the film feels like a lot of padded boring stuff. McAvoy looks believable as someone who has multiple personalities, but he never felt menacing to me. And I don't feel comfortable about what Shyamalan has done to the protagonist's backstory and ending.

Get Out - Good as a thriller, but the reveal has been telegraphed during the first encounter with the family. Still fun to watch though.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

I'm not sure if Guy Ritchie is the right guy to shoot medieval fantasy movies. If it was made by Uwe Boll it would be amazing though (it definitely feels like it, reminded me a lot about Dungeon Siege). Not good. Not bad. Sometimes entertaining. Sometimes dumb beyond dumb. 5/10
