I can only take this as a serious opinion if the anime ended at the sasuke retrieval arc, or the last 25% or so of it doesn't count for whatever reason.

Chunnin exam to sasuke-naruto faceoff was the best.
I did like the gaara rescue part in shippuden though, it wasn't so bad.

Cant agree more, watched Naruto several times, and It's soo cool! from episode 1-135 it's orginal action packed awesome stories & fights (much better than shippuden). Rest from 136-221 or so is fillers and not worth watching.

I watched/read like 20-30 episodes and I didn't like it. Like a year later a friend of mine told be to watch Shippuuden instead and I liked it way more. A matter of taste I guess.

Im pretty sure that was a filler dude... aka its not canon aka it doesnt matter. The reason why they said 'so they know about that time' is because fillers are obviously not allowed to reveal things that arent canon, because if the author of the manga later changes some of his characters or reveals the past, it might create a big plothole between Manga and Anime.
EDIT : dont watch fillers, its so shit your brain will melt. There are some funny fillers, and those are pretty good, but the fillers where they are serious and actually try to create a story are soooooo baaddddd.

Dude, just keep watching. Once you make it to the Chuunin exam it becomes amazing and the action doesn't die down (unless you catch a filler or two but you can always google to filter out the filler eps) until the time skip. Chuunin + Sasuke retrieval are easily the two best arcs in the entire series.
Not to mention the animation is probably 1000000x better. I hate the new shippuuden animation.

Pre-shippuuden was pretty good, except for the fact that half of each episode was composed of flashbacks. I remember someone made an abridged Naruto series, and he literally cut out the flashbacks and was left with a 6-minute clip.
