Was he a saint from the start? Idr but I know he got promoted or something later on.
After the last round of powerups I would say Natsu/Grey/Erza/Laxus are all definitely stronger then him in combat. Maybe he is like Warrod where is has a lot of magic power but not good at fighting? Dunno but I don't see any of the 4 I listed losing to him in a real fight.

Jura was like the 10th Wizard Saint that barely qualified after the Erza/Jellal arc and then promoted to #5 since there was nobody else worth promoting after the time skip

I don't know how you could possibly state that Erza is stronger than Laxus lmao.
Laxus was leagues above the main cast for the entire post timeskip and his only feat after the recent timeskip was to casually land a nuke that August believed would one shot kill a spriggan that Erza required help from a magical cannon + new armor and she still almost lost/died.
He is the final boss of the guild seeing as Gildarts is never around. Saying that Erza is stronger than him honestly makes me question if you read a different version of Fairy Tail to everyone else...

Well I'd argue that Mashima has poorly handled power levels and that really any of the top 4 FT guild members could beat each other any given day. They are probably all pretty close in power now.

I'm going to be honest, I never understood all the fuss about erza being strong.
I really don't see it, and I never did.
She is always presented as being mega strong, but somehow always ends up being captured and then it's natsu to the rescue.

i guess having his arm torn off changed things and then Natsu used igneels magic so i guess he got concerned that there is a possibility of them stopping him
or Zeref making his move made him decide to do something as well
i dunno if we can really assume his actions follow logic at this point though, hes seemed pretty whimsical so far
