The dimension guy came and made the strongest disappear like nothing (Erza) and then Lucy. So that was already quite a moral shock. So yeah, they lost their moral directly, that's why they lost so fast. The Sand guy right now was also looking very strong, and the fact that Makarov (One of the strongest wizard) told them that they were no match for him did the rest. Natsu finally came back to his sense and managed to regain is will. I'm sure the island chick is stronger than sand guy too, but they were never way stronger than FT post time skip. | ||

I think it's mostly Makarov saying they're no match. That's shonen code for kick his ass. Natsu always fights harder when the old man says he can't win. They've also seen sand magic before, although this guy is on a completely different level to Max. They have an idea of what to expect fighting this guy whereas they had no idea what Brandish could do. | ||
