Some of the AAA games made today have this generic homogeneity that makes it feel like once you've played through one, you've played through three already present in the market. Only difference would be the story, but I just look up a summary on Wikipedia and rarely discover anything too groundbreaking. Not to mention their sizes lately where you are expected to devote well over 80-100 hours, and for people with full-time careers, it isn't so easy to swallow a game that massive in 2-3 hour chunks every day.

I gave a try at the older PC classics like Fallout and System Shock 2, but I can't find them that enjoyable and something I really want to boot up. Maybe my brain has been too addled with casualness lately.

The game industry itself has hit is wall where production takes a ton of man hours and the prices and margins for the games have not increased. It is very much an industry that is slowly eating its own tale, with stories that big and small developers are having a hard time courting talent because everyone knows the life same of a programmer is 5 years. And the games have started to reflect that trend, because they are all the safest bets possible.

Not to say I didn’t enjoy Spiderman or other games like it. But nothing will reach the high of 2008 EA pumping out Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge in the same year as AC: Prime. Those were the years people were taking some chances on games and making wild shit.

Not every studio dares to go the ubisoft way and demands 100 euros for the whole game stacked with some useless pay to have an easier time in the campaign bundles.

That's a hefty sum to be honest. I wouldn't have paid that much for Nier:Automata even though I think it would be worth it in hindsight.

I mean that's one of the issues

when you buy a game you pay upfront for the entirety of the experience, so you need a good measure of confidence that all 20-100+ hours will be worth it.

Simultaneously, people are very resistant to "parting out" the game and buying it in chunks, which would allow you to experience part before paying the whole bill (admittedly, no game has ever reasonably priced it's "chunks").

I just wish there was more price variants at the higher end. I remember when Nintendo games were $80 in the 1990 just because they had more memory and parts in them. But I think we have hit a point where a company like Rockstar could just say “this game is huge and cost a lot to make, it’s $80” and people would accept that.

what res and refresh rate do you use

WQHD & 60 Hz (and fhd & 144 though there's been some CPU bottlenecking with the 1080 I had).
Currently but aiming for the 4k (60) when upgrading next year but I've really become a sucker for high graphic settings (£££).

Oh, and currently I have no card whatsoever lol.
And ill be upgrading mid /end of January the earliest.

why not just go for 1440p 144hz and stick with a 1080

and go for 4k 144hz in the next upgrade cycle

Been playing ys 1 recently... that has a really weird battle system. You just... run into things and try not to be centered when you do it. Unusually, the rest the Ys games have a much more normal ARPG system.

That would be fine actually, even 1440p with 60hz, but I sold the 1080 in January for a small profit after it became clear that I wasn't going to be able to game on my PC for a year at minimum.
And I'm rather hesitant to get a new last generation card. Maybe if I find a cheap 2nd hand one but that's not a given.

If it's Ys1 because it's the first one, it makes sense for it to be a bit weird, no?

If you just had to play the game with a major art and dialogue overhaul, would you recognize it as a Ys game?

Oh, the art is pretty similar. Even the gameplay isn't terribly different. It's really short though, but with insanely brutal boss fights. I'd guess it is maybe 5 hours?

Feel like the art is a prototype for Trails in the Sky.

Well, it's the same company. The portrait art he's using is from the 2009 version instead of the 2001 version too, so there's definitely overlap there. (I prefer the 2001 version, and Steam comes with both as toggleable). And the original is some turbogfx-16 thing that had voice acting, but it got retranslated by xseed for steam (not that there was THAT much text).

I may give up on the final boss though (it seems almost the exact same difficulty on normal).

Ys series is basically generally about absurdly hard bosses that are extremely predictable, and taking advantage of that - though the difficulty has definitely gone down since the first by a LOT.

Yeah they probably recycle art or style quite a lot. Must save on costs in some area.

The two leads from Tokyo Xanadu look exactly like Alisa/Rean from Trails of Cold Steel.

Well, the sprites for that remake came from 99-2000 and Trails in the Sky FC came out in 2004. They probably had some of the same people doing some of the art.

The steam/ps4 version of Xanadu is so much better than the Vita one. Granted, it's a remake/remaster, but still.

Tokyo Xanadu had a significantly more likeable main cast than Cold Steel. I'd say there are surface deep similarities between Hiiragi and Alyssa, but Alyssa is a much flatter character overall. The story was also somehow less ridiculous than much of CS1/2, which is impressive when you consider that one of Xanadu's major plot points was secret international para-military societies (multiples of them!) that somehow have high schoolers as high ranking members. Though the pacing was a bit off at times.

I really don't see Emma/Hiiragi though, Emma is much bustier, wears glasses, and has a totally different hair style. Kou and Rean do look somewhat similar in that they both have dark hair, but I think Kou is a bit less generic looking (and also uses a very different weapon).

One character, Towa, does literally appear in both games, but that felt like more of an easter egg than laziness (also, her model/design were far too good to be wasted on a random side character only).

I think I like Xanadu overall more the CS1/2, thinking about it, though it's got more of a budget B-movie feel, and I liked the combat more in CS. It may just be that I had much lower expectations for Xanadu than CS though. Xanadu is basically the combat of Ys, setting/ out of combat of Persona (though far less time management and far fewer day-to-day decisions), and themes of Trails.

I would note that hard on Xanadu is far closer to normal on most games. Normal is extraordinarily easy.

I found the secret to dota. Just play 3 games every 5 months. The matchmaking will put you into teams with smurfs at first, before going back to putting you against smurfs.
