No Man's Sky is a lot of fun now and a good, chill way to pass the time. 3rd person does a lot for that game. NMS would have avoided the shitstorm if they just went as an early access game with features that were to be implemented over time. Took them two years to finally reach what they were aiming for, but boy, they burned so much goodwill I doubt their next project will receive many preorders. Not that I particularly sympathize with what they underwent. They could have tempered down the expectations and not lied to the public. Not a fan of how their story is being told as "the plucky game devs who were too ambitious, made mistakes, and now redeemed themselves". They fumbled hard and paid the price, and while it is nice they continued to update what could have been dropped as a failure, I hope this is a cautionary tale for both customers and game devs to always keep your expectations down low, especially for overly ambitious games introduced at E3. Yeah, but it was two years ago, they have tried hard to make up for it and the new stuff is good. In the year of our lord 2018 I can’t really get mad about video games in any way or feel anything but tired with folks nursing that outrage for 2 years.

Downloading Gunbuster right now, will probably watch it in two weeks when my buddy is back in town. Shaella if you're reading this, sorry it's taken so long.
|
Gunbuster is amazing, don't leave me out You should also watch the sequel diebuster
The ending to both of them still makes me shed a tear every time
|
I'll take your word on it. We won't be able to watch Diebuster that day since we still have The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya to get through.

Yeah im aleays really uncomfortable in fancy places lol. We had to take a class photo here at oxford and everyone dressed up for it except me. Instead I wore shorts and a tshirt that said "darth vader for president '08"
Im thinking il stop by nyc sometime around 15th? That work for you? Uh I have a highschool thing on the 15th but I’ll gladly ditch if it’s the only day you’re here. Or take the day off or smth.
Rest of the week is free.

Nah its fine il come a day or two later

Taking a final where I was told there was going to be an essay question ... I think the professor made a mistake, as it asks us to make a graph... (and a kind that wasn't in the class at all)
|
Ur allowed to use a phone while you take finals? Cool dude
|
lol, it's a take home, open book, online test. Doesn't make it easier, as looking up "knowledge graph" directs you to this friendly, simple wikipedia page : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontology_(information_science)
Oh, I think it's just asking for an overview of what one is... my professor just has poor english, so nevermind. Wrote "view on" instead of "overview of"
|
I hate open book tests, they make me shiver. Some courses let us take in X sheets of paper (front and back, sometimes just one side) and they were just awful, but doable because in the process of making my cheat sheets, I'd thoroughly review all the useful topics.
My students this past term convinced the prof into letting them make their own cheat-sheets instead of being given equations, which was a disaster. At least your test is take home, although that doesn't make it any easier typically.
|
Take home, open book multiple choice tests are my favorite, though they're something of a joke.
|
I hate multiple choice but also haven't taken them home before, so it's hard to say if I hate the format or just hate my performance on them.
Are they a thing in your grad studies or just during your undergrad?
|
They're a joke because professors who use them are extremely lazy, and thus far too lazy to actually write their own goddamn questions, so a simple google search will always turn up the bank of questions they pulled them from.
I'd say about 70% of my classes have used them so far, but the higher I go the fewer there have been. (Also, it's business/IS , so it's a weird mix of things).
|
I've had a prof once give us like 15 old exams he wrote with the answer keys. Guess who just memorized, stuff and didn't internalize a thing..?
Granted that course was weird and a little out of place in our curriculum. Semiconductor physics would've been great about a year sooner, but it was studied after some students would never again take classes to apply the material.
|
My SQL professor just posted copies of lectures he gave back when windows XP was still being used at my university, and as far as I could tell, hadn't actually changed any of what he taught since 1993.
Granted, it's SQL, so I doubt it really changed, but when you're telling your students that nothing is better than notepad and a command line, you're going to get some complaints.

I had two semesters of undergrad astronomy where I literally got 110% on all 8 exams because While studying for the first one I checked out the cd that came with the textbook (I’m old this was one of the first textbooks I had that had this), did all the practice quizzes that were on it, and then professor pulled his tests straight from the same question bank. Rofl
(Also there were 10 bonus points of very maths heavy questions on every test that most of the class really struggled with.)
Somehow in two semesters no one figured this out? Not sure because the one person I told still missed questions somehow although she got an A out of it. Class average was in the 50s and then there was a perfect score at top every exam. People were so pissed. I cashed it in for a great reference letter for some tuition waiver or something. xD
|
Oh right. Atreides talking about tuition reminded me to go pay it finally. Been putting it off for a week.
So I checked out my tuition and I think my school does this weird thing of not publishing all the fees at once, so it jumped about $100. I'm not late to paying it or anything (I think I have until October?) but like to get rid of it when I can, because holds on my account would get really annoying since it takes a good week to get anything cleared up at this school.
Has anyone else experienced this?
|
The question bank questions are always phrased awfully, like to the point that I generally am convinced that the person who wrote them does not speak english as their first, second, or third language. That's usually how I can tell if they'll be really easily google-able.
As far as random fees go, yeah. Sometimes it's for really random shit that is clearly a mistake. But normally it's stuff they clearly made up to squeeze out a few extra cents (like "filing fee" or "bed fee")
