They totally fucked up that release and didn't do enough to tamp down expectations. But they worked on it for free, without charging anyone for the new content for 2 years. Its a wash for me.

Didn't do enough to tamp down expectations? They created all those expectations themselves by straight up lying. This is the opposite of fans creating hype for things that the devs never promised, this is the devs promising tons of things that straight up weren't in the game.
False advertisement and straight up lying to supposedly get more sales is an easy way for devs to forever make me not buy any of their products ever. Why would i trust them on anything ever again?
