Nothing will replicate the magic of the early heady days of Xbox live on the 360. Talking to random people on the internet, like father/son teams playing horde mode in Gears. Making weird friends online. People doing drugs like playing Uno on the Xbox camera. It was like everyone got access to the multiplayer at once and the majority of the population just treated like being in a public space. But time ruined it and now you just mute everyone. But from like 2009-2012 a wonderfully weird time.

I was in a diablo 2 guild with legit players and even got to meet em IRL
Had a 2 person lan with one guy for a weekend or so and played excessive amounts of CS with the dead guy scouting for the one left alive on CS_Office and such. The other guy was on a badminton tournament as well so we went to the sports facility to meet him and continued gaming afterwards.
He later went on and enlisted in the military for 10 years. Talked to him once since the enlistment and he told me about his recent cruise with the marine. the captain got too drunk to walk, fell into the sea at the hardbor and had to be rescued by his first mate who was himself too drunk to recue the captain so both of them had to be rescued by the other soldiers somehow.
and they supposedly shot shells into the sea for the lulz. at like 10k€ each.
good times he said.

for me i usually browse titles of articles in google news to keep a pulse on what's going on

anandtech and wffctech for tech stuff, rarely engadget/the verge
538 for interesting random commentary on sports and politics
business of fashion, the new yorker, and the economist round out the rest of the stuff i'm interested in.

any other suggestions for some balanced media?

NPR is very good. I recommend following any of their politics reporters on twitter. They give live updates from the congress daily events. And discuss the mood and tone of congress. It is far more informative than listening to some politics jockey pontificate about goverment. And NPR is pretty even handed in their news reporting, even if their editorial and other subjects lean left.

If you want people catch up on politics, this is the most efficient way to do it without the pro-wrestling style commentary.

I sometimes delve into some Vox or Vice media if they are doing some investigative reporting that interests me. Other than that I read the NYT and the Sunday WSJ. And about once a month I write an angry email to the Times about their editorial section because I am my grandfather. But Jesus their editorial writers are the fucking worst.

One of their reporters, Sam Sanders, said that in 2016 that NPR could only hope to reach at best 50% of the population. And as a news agency and reporters, that is unacceptable. So yeah, they put a lot of effort into keeping their coverage neutral. You could hear them struggling to do it when it came to the camps filled with kids in teh last couple weeks. And the recent shooting at that news paper. At least they are honest about it and say it is a struggle.

You asked about the news, not On Point or Fresh Air. Those are discussion call in shows, not news. Their reporting does not have much of a left leaning slant. No more than the Times or Post's news section.

I think leaning left at this point is just pertaining to facts and not being horrible fucking people.

At least in US politics.

And NPR doesn't go as critical against the right as it should, tbh. They don't report on lots of stories that are probably worth reporting, to seem more neutral, or they give the right more of a say than they should.

I compulsively tab through New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, Reuters, Politico, The New Yorker, and twitter

Occasionally i check other magazines that have a more explicit political bent to get the view of what people are saying in other circles. Slate (liberal-leftist), The Atlantic (some libs some conservatives, cut rate version of the new yorker), the National Review (far-right, retarded).

also check scotusblog for US law news.
