The "on the other hand" is that JD would have made exactly as much cash and been able to HALF THE TICKET PRICE if valve agreed to go halfsies with them (50/50). Thats a big deal for spectators IMO. Its not like this isn't "free money" for valve too, now that the system is in place those ticket sales are kinda pure profit for them as well.

On the other hand, I was mad at The Defense 3 and JD for the silly ticket price ($10 If I recall correctly). Now that I know they only were charging $2.50 for what they did and valve tacked on the rest (so to speak) I feel kinda cheated by valve. 50% seems steep but fair to me. 75% is highway robbery, even if it is still just "free money" for the tournaments. I kinda feel the same way about the content creators tbh. A 50/50 split seems steep but fair. 75/25 valves way feels kinda dirty. Just try to think about how much money Twitch takes off people streaming at their service. I think if you subscribe to a channel, which is like directly supporting the streamer, Twitch takes 50% of that. And for ad revenue, it's going to be way way higher. I think Valve said somewhere that 90% of the revenue generated by actual content creators gets cut by middleman such as Twitch.tv. Just to use the Dreamhack invitational comparison again (because it's the only data I know of), 2GD said that they made $2500 from Twitch ads, and they had like 7 broadcasting days with very good viewers (around 25k average). And they made $5000 from DotaTV, I don't know which is the bigger thievery, tbh. e: accidentally a word.

Revenue and profit are completely different. I don't think there is any way Twitch takes 90% of the net profit from their streamers. But fair point. You guys are right that valve is still incurring ongoing server costs that I originally ignored.

At the same time you also have to remember that they charge you about 8 for just a courier as it stands already. So really you paid $10 for that and the ability to watch the games in the client. I don't think 75/25 is ideal, maybe like 66/33 but not sure how much valve had to put in in order to make it work.

Everyone wins, the % that Valve takes is irrelevant. Does The Defense deserve 50-75k for their tickets? Probably not, it's not like they're being ripped off. And I guess you could make the argument that "I pay to support The Defense" but ultimately in a free-to-play game every bit you spend is essentially paying for your playtime in the game. If this was SC2 where people have paid up-front they could take considerably less of a %.

I'm sure a lot of people fell for it. “At this point we don't really think of Dota 2 as a beta, but we also aren't ready for everyone to show up and start playing just yet. We are constantly updating the game with new heroes, bug fixes, and new features. We've still got work to do before we can support the number of players who've shown interest in Dota 2. Right now we're working on expanding our server infrastructure, which is the primary bottleneck. Purchasing an Early Access pass will allow you join the Dota 2 community and help build the game. The more people we have generating ideas and providing feedback, the better Dota 2 will become. In addition, every single feature is avaliable to you and none of the items purchased or progress made will be lost or reset once the game is available for everyone.” http://store.steampowered.com/app/570/ Why would you put "buy an early access" instead of "get your free beta key here" like in the DotA2 blog? I know Valve is a business but a lot of casuals don't even know that DotA2 is a F2P.

Pretty sure its the same WD cosmetics you get for your first purchase of anything from the dota 2 store, but I guess I could be wrong. On the subject of valve's cut one last time: Dunno, I don't have much against valve (more accurately, I *love* valve) but this deal seems pretty raw for the people taking risks to create this content. Ah well. I certainly agree with the "free money" argument too. I'm just kinda torn. I wish there was a way for the tournaments to really differentiate in-game viewing from watching the stream. Sure controlling your own camera is nice but Its hard to justify paying $10 to control the camera for yourself, and re-paying every tournament. Plus between-game content and stuff only happens on stream etc.
