If you were a true lazy then you wouldn't bother to learn this new method of laziness.

If you are coming from war3 like myself, you have to give it try. The joy of moving your melee hero so close to the creep without the need to keep pressing S to stop him from auttoattacking.....and that no more mismicro of accidentally attack the enemy to reveal yourself while hiding/juking the enemy...oh man, i approve the existence of this option (where i rarely approve anything differs from the original dota)!

It really depends. A lot of us use s to farm, so it's impossible to switch it off for us.

It looks nice on syllabear, especially since dota2 doesn't seem to formation properly.

Playing riki for the first time...went through diffusal charges so fast...but you can't re-buy recipe to recharge it if its upgraded? Do people normally sell it and buy a new one or just not bother about the active after running out?

Okay, I'm finally going to be making good on my promise to some people a while back to start playing DOTA 2.

I have a beta key. What are some champions that I should be taking a look at for starting?

I played a single game as support Shadow Demon a month ago, but that didn't really appeal to me.

Lich is an amazing hero to start out with. It's support, but there's a lot of possibility for aggression early and it teaches you a lot of aspects which are great to be good at later, such as knowing when to run, how to get in decent position for a gank, how to be useful in a teamfight even if you're squishy.

Basically, just play lich, focus on denying using Sacrifice, get Power Threads as fast as possible and then focus on getting bracers for survivability until you feel more comfortable, then you can go for a Mekansm etc. Only goal in lategame is to keep frost armor on everyone and get ulti off before dying. Against low MMR opponents, if you learn how to be aggressive early, it's no problem getting a decent amount of kills on lane which will help your team a ton.

If you prefer to try your hand at carrying, Skeleton King is probably the best carry for beginners. Great nuke stun, tanky, ulti which means it's OK to die in a teamfight, lifesteal... really easy to stomp if you get decent items.

Also hero's with an escape mechanism like Wind Runner may be good. Her spells and builds are straightforward, if you hit Windrun, you can escape most ganks and you will be helpful with few items if you can land shackles.

I feel Nai'x is also pretty good for a beginner to carries in general. You get a powerful slow and some really good lifegain when you hit stuff. It also teaches you just how good magic immunity is.

It depends how serious you want to take the game as well, if you just want to have fun just pick anything. If you want to learn the game the most efficient way so you can get good then I'd say just play all the support heroes. If you're playing with a friend and they want to support you can pick carry heroes like nightstalker/riki/lifestealer and lane together.

You shouldn't use the term "Champions", at least in game. Some people go completely nuts if you mention it.

Lich is the best choice. I started with Lina, which was quite an experience (Lina's attack animation is horrible). You should stay away from carries until you're confident with your farming abilities.

First thing I would do is to not search all pick. Go with single draft and random draft which forces you all to play 'random' heroes. Just go with the recommended items.

I wouldn't start by playing support heroes. 99% of the time you will be completely useless until you learn the game and it's easier to feed with them too. But don't pick a hard carry either, a hero that cannot do absolutely anything without good items.
Easy to do good with heroes like leoric, windrunner or lich are great to start with.

You should probably train last hitting in practice games, because it is important for everyone, no matter their role. As a support, when and if you ever get an empty lane you really want to take full advantage of it and last hit every creep as long as you still got the chance. In the rare occasions that supports have access to farm they really need to be good at it, while carries have to last hit well all game long.

You will still get flamed a lot no matter how good you do, never forget that. And it doesn't get better either, so your skin better get pretty thick pretty fast.

One thing that does happen more often though, is that people commend you for playing well. I still get flamed the same amount, but every now and again I get a "wp [yourhero]" from somebody, which makes everything a bit better.

I got a message yesterday saying someone I reported has had action taken against them.

It works sometimes apparently!

Though fortunately, I haven't had to report anyone lately.

In case anyone was wondering, I usually don't report unless they're really "vocal" in either mic or text (I think a total of maybe like 5-7 people out of 100+ games so far, which isn't too bad).

Speaking of getting commended for playing well, the "friendly" and "forgiving" commendations aren't always a good indicator if said person is a nice person.

I remember someone with 11+ friendly (100 wins, so approx 200 games I assume) flaming someone in a game I was in (not for any major mistakes but minor ones). Sometimes people get commended because they're good rather than because they're actually friendly (or they're only "friendly" when you do good which is the case with most people).

Though it isn't useless. If someone has 0 friendly commendations (or really few) and 100 games won in their details page, you know something may not be right.

I report people if I don't want to play with them again for a reason different than their skill. Got a few reactions already

I know Lich is commonly recommended and I know why, but don't play Lich unless it's a good pick for your team. I say this for no reason besides the fact that Lich is boring as hell. Windrunner is a better choice. More fun, more flexible, more to do. Yeah there's some manual targeting of her spells but I think that's where a lot of the fun is. She also has an escape so you don't feed as hard.
