I think it's because they're used to DOTA being the only game of the genre, so no genre name was used for a looooong time. Then they make weird arguments against MOBA because "most games are multiplayer online and take place in some kind of battle arena". Even though StarCraft is an e-sport and yet noone claims that it is the game ganre as FIFA or other sports games. And Quake 3 is a real-time game where players use various strategies and yet it isn't considered to be RTS. Don't worry about them, keep using the MOBA word instead of "DOTA-like" or "DOTA-clone" (unless you are the kind of person that calls StarCraft "dune2-like" or "dune2-clone" instead of RTS). Sooner or later people will adapt to this short acronym I see "MOBA" as an euphemism for dota clone. The term's purpose is so LoL and others could advertise themselves without referring to the original game, DotA never referred to itself as a "MOBA". Similarly, heroes were never referred to as "champions".
and in a month or maybe a year champion will go the same way as moba and people won't care about people using it anymore.

That quotes are from other media and not Valve directly. People are a joke sometimes.
If you wanna quote real words from Valve you go to http://www.valvesoftware.com/games/dota2.html and read:
"As for the gameplay, it’s difficult to classify. The camera is set in the traditional RTS perspective, but it wouldn’t be fair to call Dota an RTS. And while each hero starts at level 1, and many times hits the level cap of 25, it wouldn’t be fair to call it an RPG. Lots of people have tried to assign various genre names to Dota, but we think Action RTS is probably the most descriptive."
I hope once the game is released they make a clear statement for every media that DotA2 is not a MOBA therefore media should stop calling it a MOBA and call it ARTS.
My opinion? MOBA is totally a joke of a name and can even describe FPS games. ARTS? Sucks balls as well but it's way better than MOBA. AoS = Where it all began, if Eul,Meian,Guinsoo,Neichus and IceFrog couldn't describe what DotA really is, why just don't call it AoS or simply DotA-genre? Since 2005 DotA was known by DotA-genre and Demigod/HoN never had a problem with it... but Riot did for obvious reasons... so yeah. DotA-genre/AoS or ARTS are the way to go to describe DotA2. If you media wanna keep calling MOBA, do it for LoL but not for DotA/DotA2.

Sadly the original dotablog is down and I didn't think about checking the valve page.
It's sad that so many dota players are so incredibly militant about this type of stuff, I guess the whole discussion about this term is just a showcase for that general attitude. Besides the link you posted (thanks for that) the rest is just the usual propaganda. =P

so I randomly stalked Dendi's reddit profile
he's still answering his AMA from 13 days ago

Probably because he keeps getting the little red message icon popping up so he knows more questions are there. Good guy dendi answers AMA even after the post falls off the front page.

In a community as diverse/non-central as Dota/LoL/HoN players, it's really not possible to force prescriptive definitions (http://grammar.about.com/od/basicsentencegrammar/f/descpresgrammar.htm) on terms like MOBA after they've already passed into common usage. MOBA has pretty much won out in the gaming community at large and the reasons for railing against it are probably too esoteric to gain traction.
I prefer ARTS, myself, but if I were talking to someone who knew the term MOBA but did not know Dota (if that's even possible) I wouldn't try to force ARTS on the conversation.

I don't know if you are an old school DotA player like myself (I started playing back in 2004 when I "left" BW because I sucked so much ) but many of us are elitists because Riot made us hate them for obvious reasons. I think the strongest one is Pendragon being hired by Riot and 1 week later burning DotA AllStars (all the content, fan art, guides everything) and promote LoL in his last statement... he also "promised" us the content back but guess what? Not even a single word! And of course, Morello and Zileas talking shit about DotA's heroes and balance. "BS Rupture and Invoker are burden of knowledge and anti-fun!".But Invoker in DotA2 has a good line for Morello's thoughts about him...

That's the problem with Riot. Riot denied the DotA legacy. Since the begging. Remember when DotA2's trailer came out? LoL community went full retard with "What a copy of LoL, wtf is this shit?" "VALVE, NICE RIPOFF OF LoL!!". This only shows that Riot knows how to keep their community blind and the truth for them... many of people don't even know that Guinsoo was actually a DotA developer back in the day!
|
So you hold a lifetime grudge and think Riot spreads propaganda and brainwashes their players? I can understand some disappointment with the whole situation, but you're the worst kind of extremist.
|
You have to understand, people fucking HATE riot and have for a long time. It's been well-established and Riot has never done a single thing to try and make peace. The lifetime grudge against them is obviously justified by their recent efforts to force teams to drop dota 2 squads or bribe tournaments to be LoL exclusive.
Also on Moba's origins as a term, Hunter went on to do the same shady shit in HoN and he was a known pedophile. It's not that much of an exaggeration to say that he single-handedly destroyed HoN's competitive scene for months (or was the catalyst for a lot of issues, namely running tournaments and never paying money, running websites and never paying for them, etc.). Not using the term MOBA is because of how badly the guy damaged multiple communities and made trust within them pretty much impossible (and it was already bad). If the communities were larger he wouldn't be remembered and loathed so much because his ability to cause damage merely as a community member would have been much less.
This thread shouldn't contain discussion of HoN, I know that. This is just history to me.

Hi there, I just got my DotA 2 invitation in my e-mail, and can now play the game. Yay! I don't have any invites for my friends though, is that normal now? I can't find them in my steam inventory, at least.
Thanks for any help
