I'm genuinely curious; why do so many DotA players hate the word "MOBA"?

It was first coined by a chap called HunteR_ that started many Dota 1 leagues. He promised great things, only to go back on his word and disappear each time. He was a really dodgy figure that people grew to distrust greatly and so no one wants to use a term he came up with.

Secondly, it barely describes Dota as a game. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena? Doesn't that describe almost every online game? Valve have written a short blurb on this but I cbf to find it.

Valve themselves calls DotA 2 a "MOBA" in their press releases.

So... yeah.

Initially they were against the term. I suspect as time passed they decided to stop fighting it and embrace a term that sadly many people now recognise without knowing its origins.

Is Battlefield a MOBA ? Yes.
Is CoD a MOBA ? Yes.
Is SC2 a MOBA ? Yes ( 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 ).
Is WoW a MOBA ? Yes.
Is DayZ a MOBA ? Yes.

I can go on for days...

You can do the same thing for practically any game genre. None of them are good indicators.

That's the point. MOBA is a generic term which can be used to describe every single multiplayer game that has been made.

So can RTS, but people still use it to talk about certain games. So long as the game is played in real time, pretty much every game on the market has some strategy involved so why aren't all games RTS? My point is that no genre is a good description so none of them should be. It has a certain connotation that people understand even though the denotation is not descriptive at all and it doesn't need to be. As long as people understand the connotation of the word they'll know what you're talking about, and people have coined the term moba.

It's a plain issue of marketing. Valve tried to push for the word "ARTS" as something that's opposing the word moba to differentiate themselves from what else is out there. Then they realized the word moba is too much integrated into peoples head already so they adapted.

At this point bashing the word for some ancient history doesn't make a whole lot of sense, it's here, it's accepted by the industry, deal with it. =P

I think it's because they're used to DOTA being the only game of the genre, so no genre name was used for a looooong time. Then they make weird arguments against MOBA because "most games are multiplayer online and take place in some kind of battle arena". Even though StarCraft is an e-sport and yet noone claims that it is the game ganre as FIFA or other sports games. And Quake 3 is a real-time game where players use various strategies and yet it isn't considered to be RTS.

Don't worry about them, keep using the MOBA word instead of "DOTA-like" or "DOTA-clone" (unless you are the kind of person that calls StarCraft "dune2-like" or "dune2-clone" instead of RTS). Sooner or later people will adapt to this short acronym

I'm pretty sure those are pulled off other websites. In fact, one of them is actually an article name on Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

and in the end who cares anyways. i remember some nex wars and unit arenas in bw that were basicly dota, kill main building, improve units, get credits for killing.

get angry over a weird genre name is beyond pointless.

I see "MOBA" as an euphemism for dota clone. The term's purpose is so LoL and others could advertise themselves without referring to the original game, DotA never referred to itself as a "MOBA". Similarly, heroes were never referred to as "champions".
