The problem is not really the enunciation, although that doesn't help. The problem is the fact she doesn't really fit into a cast with Tasteless.
Taking professional sportscasting as the ideal model system, the two person booth is, in general, a play-by-play man and a color analyst. The pbp guy not only describes the action on the field, but also creates dialog, sometimes interjects humor, understands the pacing of the game and knows when to communicate excitement, etc. Tasteless is this guy.
His partner is a color guy. Artosis is someone who analyzes the strategy and the players. He brings up the fact that a new build order is out on the Korean ladder and that's what we're seeing. He goes and interviews players in their house. He talks to players (esp. Idra) about their build orders before the match. He provides the depth of knowledge that lets the broadcast really work. Plus, as he and Tasteless he have a long history of working together and share the same sense of humor, the team is just plain fun to listen to.
In today's cast with Kelly, they tried to switch Tasteless into the Artosis role and have him do color. But, he was also doing the large bulk of the play by play. This left Kelly with virtually nothing useful left to say. She was invited to comment some games, but she had no meaningful role.
It's not all lost, though. It might be different with Artosis. She might be better in a PBP role with a more practiced color commentator. Or, she might improve over the course of the season. Remember how much we hated the new observer? And now, I think we can all agree that the observer does a fantastic job.
So, bottom line, tl;dr version: It's hard to pin this on Kelly. It's probably a combination of bad commentary skills (which can be improved), lack of experience (which will be improved) and perhaps a strange pairing with Tasteless. I am hopeful that she will do well over the course of the season as they work out the kinks and find a more suitable role for her on the broadcast.
i really wish your american sports commentators would read this
listening to john gruden, or jaws talk some trivial crap about a player after EVERY play is not fun nor interesting to listen to. i dont think its possible for every player to be "the best (insert position here) in the league." they could all do with some freaking understanding of what makes for good sport. hmmm, possibly the nfl not taking a 5minute break after every play would make it quicker and more interesting
as for kelly, i think she was fine and pretty easy to listen to i live in the worlds most multicultural city, so i guess i am used to picking up accents. she has a strong accent, but for those that can't understand, then maybe some of them should take that as a reflection on themselves and their own cultures. people from all over the world watch the GoM streams, not just english speakers with american accents (which are utterly terrible and monotone btw)

So I wrote a VDAY SC2 Poem.
I don’t want to be an overlord wandering forever in the lost temple skies, Or a Lair that can never transit to a Hive. You caught me out like a burrowed baneling, After losing you, I am like a queen without her king.
I remember when I first saw you, my heart was concussive shelled, Who is this medivac, that was to save me from hell? You sieged up and protected me, You gave me stim-pack and set me free.
You are like a blink stalker that caught me by surprise, Heck for you, I would even leave Aiur for life. When I miss you, my zealots refuse to charge, When I yearn for you, my forcefields misses too much.
They say my heart is full of ice, My eyes are full of lies. I might be doomed to walk this mortal life, Without you by my side.
I still want to tell you that you’re so fine, And you’re always on my Overmind. I don’t want no MarineKingPrime, I just need you to be my Valentine.

NEWater : I believe I am the OxygeN you are referring to, unless there is another one who is around the top that I am not aware of.
I am a good friend of Kelly, and seeing you berate her endlessly sort of annoys me, but well everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I don't really care much about that.
So, why am i quoting you? Simple. You simply said Kelly cheated in ESL, and I helped her cheat. That is personally insulting, to me at least. I coached/taught her in the weeks and days in preparation for ESL.
Kindly post here who gave you the tip-off, or PM me the person's name. don't hide behind an unverified tip-off, as another mean to berate her credentials. That is low.

GSL code A is over for me. I'm sorry Kelly may be a great girl - but she is the worst caster ever. I really would be happy of streaming games without comment at all - just sound of the game. PLEASE.

Post on GOMTV Forums: To make the forum a more enjoyable experience for everyone,
we would kindly ask you to refrain from making threads/posts about 'Kelly'.
The forum is a service we offer for our users to allow them to interact with each other about the league and SC2 matches. Some of the users are unable to use the forum due to the excessive amount of posts related to Kelly rather than value added discussions or information about GSL and StarCraft2.
As we have stated in our previous announcement, Kelly is not a permanent caster for Code A yet. We are still considering a lot of various options. We have read enough feedbacks from our users (both postive and negative) which we value very much.
Please do not abuse the forum privileges and try to keep the forum a place where everyone can come and enjoy.
Thank you. GOMtv.net

There's a fair bit of this, sure. But, there are plenty of analysts that spend the majority of their time talking about more high-level strategy (e.g., Chris Collinsworth). You also have ex superstars like Orel Hershiser who provides very high-level pitching analysis during baseball broadcasts. Or, ex-coaches, like Van Gundy on the TNT Basketball cast.
To your second point, in many ways, Starcraft suffers from exactly the opposite problem that Football does. Football has dead time, sometimes during uninteresting situations. This allows everyone to catch their breath, allows casters to finish a point, or allows them to clarify something that they might have said earlier. This dead time lets them show replays to point out the nuances of a particular play (or just re-emphasize how hard that guy just got hit). Football has frenzied excitement, but this excitement is still chunked into plays, and so the camera can still be focused on all of the important moments as they occur. I'm sure movement toward this kind of format is no accident, given that football emerged co-incident with the live telecast, but the game of football is incredibly well designed for TV.
Now, let's consider Starcraft. Starcraft has "dead time", but only in the same way a soccer match has dead time; there are periods of relative calm when one team is recovering from an attack and re-establishing position, but the clock never stops running. Which means the observer and casters never really get a break, and which means the audience is forced to be engaged all the time. While build orders are interesting to watch because they establish the parameters for the entire match, in a bo5 or bo7 they can become repetitive, especially if the players do the same thing over and over again (e.g., the recent TSL Qualifier Finals). On the other hand, when all the action does occur, there is simply too much action to keep everything in the picture. High level GSL games (especially ones with T participants) now often feature strategies in which turtling Terrans will bait attacks into defensive positions at the same time they are dropping key structures (see the recent IMMVP v. Idra cast by Artosis if you want a free replay for an example of this strategy). What is a commentator supposed to do? Jump wildly back and forth? Yell about one thing while showing the other?
Starcraft is a great game, but it simply wasn't designed to be televised. There are eSports improvements designed into the UI which help, but it is not an easy game to broadcast. Those things you criticize about football make it great for the broadcaster and the viewer.

she is ok. She is not as bad as people make her out to be. The only time I struggle to understand is when she speaks fast. Other than that, i can understand it all.
Also I dont mind a female at the desk. Helps to break up the complete nerdiness of 2 dudes talking about clide. (i like them but its a nice change)

You sound like someone fairly intelligent judging from your other posts, so I assume you already well know what racism means and I will ask you to refrain from throwing that term around when it clearly doesn't fit in this case.

On February 22 2011 12:20 Froadac wrote:She responded on the other forums, for those that are interested + Show Spoiler +Yes, well. I probably shouldn't say anything at all since all people link to outside of this forum out of context that makes me look like an a-hole and I can't take criticisms. I have a lot of people helping me in Korea they are all that matters at the moment. A lot of points people pointed out I am already working on. People don't seem to link all the more, how to you put it, genuine stuff I say. They take only the bad context out and screenshot it and copy paste it to other places. I am honestly working really hard in Korea. I I am having fun on screen but off screen I spend a lot of time working on my accent, speed, enunciation etc. I have people in Korea that are speaking to me ala a semi-English class everyday so I can adopt the more acceptable way of saying certain words and units. To clear a major point up, I obviously know what a Hellion is. And I do not say Bruu. I say Blue. As for Zealots, I discussed this before my casts whether to say zee-lot or zeh-lert and apparently zee-lot is ok, which was why I went with it. The reason why I am replying here and not on TL is that nobody will care what I say there. Also, this is my own community, I care about what my community thinks a lot. I know there are certain stuff I need to work on, but understand that some things that people say are just out right hate and uncalled for aggressiveness. The people who are extremely harsh to me already have a fixed mindset that I don't think I can change at the moment. I am going to watch my VODs now and see what I can improve on. So I will write later. __________________ On twitter: Thanks guys just read all my @ twits. Thanks for telling me on what I should work on. I will. And yes, throwing out my grack fancards.
Wow this is really interesting. I'm still a firm believer that if someone names themself KellyBreasts, with a blog named Vagina (well slang for those words), you should atleast consider some changes before trying out anything but porn, but if she's really trying to improve I think it might be all right after all. In my opinion she needs to focus alot on starcraft related stuff though. All the wrong calls, the confusion over who's who in TvT and the obvious stuff - such as the 'on this map mutalisks are really good in ZvT' stuff.. Pretty much every map is good for mutas in ZvT.. that's what zergs do, unless they cheese or get cheesed basically. I think it would be awesome if she could move into the oGs / Liquid house for a couple of weeks to get the hang of the game. Honestly no one would have anything against her if she seemed professional (IE non sex related name), spoke a little clearer and had a good knowledge of the game. People who are doing the whole "haters gunna hate" attitude are sadly missing the point people are trying to make. Also as she appearantly has a huge following of SEA region, but more of the opposite in the western region. I suppose that it's possible that this means that GOM doesn't like the viewer count of the western oriented stream.

Honestly I was pretty happy with Kelly's first day on the job. I presume she'll improve a lot as she gets more experienced as a caster. She seems pretty knowledgeable, at least on zerg matchups, and I didn't have nearly the problems other people are citing in understanding what she's saying.
|
She's not great but really Tasteosis just set the bar too high.
I've seen far worse, anyone remember Gunrun casting with Day9? I'd rather lol at "racecar poosh" and "ZEEEEEELOT" than heara bunch of UHHHHH every 5 seconds.

The thing I didn't like was the droning on and on and on about really simple things like TvT openings for 45 seconds straight... simple basic things are talked about for way too long

Yea, this is what I don't get. You don't hire someone at the biggest stage of Starcraft 2 in the most prestigious tournament in the world when they themselves admit they have a lot to work on. Just doesn't make sense.

now its kind of fun now, i listen simply to hear how bad it is.

The only problem for me is when she starts to talk too fast, she can sound annoying. But today's casting was OK, she has a funny accent and has sort of weird pronouncation for some words but nothing I couldn't completely get used to in just 2 or 3 games. For me there is nothing to bitch about. People are flipping out over an Asian who pronounces r instead of l? Really? Reeaally?

Has Tasteless ever posted or said that he needed to improve his commentating? I much prefer someone who recognizes own lacks and openly agrees. I hated to follow what Artosis was doing during live games to wake Tasteless up. If you did not notice it over 3 seasons, with very, very tiny jabs happening even in season 4 then I strongly believe that all you care about is Kelly being a female. The same shit that is happening to her happened to lilsusie, with the only reason being: there is a female talking during live games.

Don't feed the Troll ! Yah its understandable why a lot of people are complaining, why pay for something you are gonna hate, for those on the free stream good for you, but there are people out there that want something worth their bucks.

Kelly has already improved a LOT after just one day off to continue to work at this and practice speaking slowly and more clearly. By the end of this season I'm certain we'll forget that there was ever a controversy.
