I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listen as the crowd would sing "Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain Once you go there was never Never an honest word And that was when I ruled the world
It was the wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world
Could someone explain to me what these lyrics mean? I have tried to study them and I just don't understand what he's trying to say. Are these metaphors? Are they referring to his life? If someone could clarify this, I would appreciate it
Hmmm.... This song has strong religous allusions. The analogy of St. Peter holding the keys to heaven is heavily exploited. The "Sea's rising when I gave the word," the mention of jerusalem, rome, and missionaries all suggest some religous theme. I could make an arguement the whole song is about Jesus. How Jesus was a the King of the jews, who preached a false word, and was eventually killed. I don't know anything about the author though, so this could be completely off.

Words like these are made to be understood in many possible ways.
My opinion is that it talks about the life, perhaps his life: He was young and thought he knew what life is about. He was perhaps full of potential - future 'king' material; on top of his world. But then life's problems struck him, perhaps a dramatic occurrence happened that left his confidence and fundamental beliefs about life shattered. He's now lost and overwhelmed by life.
But that's pretty much my personal story so yeah... I think this is like a mirror, you will see what you already have in the back of your mind.
Joe Satriani took Chris Martin to court a couple months back because he claimed that Martin plagerized Satriani's song "If I Could Fly" Satriani goes on the news saying it took him 10 years to write the song about his dead wife.
Then they interview Coldplay and are like "Satriani took ten years to write that song."
And Martin goes "Ten Years? It took us like 10 Minutes!!" and then they High-Five

Burn!
Yeah, it took them ten minutes to plagiarize his song.
wow so much hate, not that I like coldplay but is there anything that people on the internet wont complain about? seem to think that everything sucks if its mainstream?o_o
and on topic I also think it has links to napoleon but many believe it also reflects christ's last days.
I mean, I understand it's a main stream big, commercial group but I really like a lot of their work. I think some people would claim to hate any popular group regardless of their actual music. The only groups that escape this are perhaps the old "classic" ones like Queen and the Beatles.
omfg...... I'm asking a question. I didn't ask your opinions or whether or not you hate coldplay. Keep the negative comments to yourselves. Basically, if you don't want to explain about the lyrics, shut up.

Woah... calm down, and don't tell other people what to do. You're the one who can't use google.
I liked Viva la Vida's lyrics, was a step away from the 'dancing in clubs', 'love me', 'she doesnt love me', 'shes gone' lyrics that i was so used to hearing in radios.
It's great that he sings used to being a king, how it plays out during the past and how it's relevant in the modern world.
It's such a shame about the plagiarism thing though.
Songmeanings is a good site for discussing lyrics, you just have to ignore all the nonversation like "OMFG THIS SONGS RULEZ" or "KICK ASS SONG".
To me, the song is about someone who use to be praised. They were at the top of their game and then made some bad decisions. As time passes, he loses everything he once had, and now he is sad Pretty deep for a pop song.
Still dosen't change the fact that this song is pretty much unlistenable.
Because this thread is worthless - art is whatever you interpret it as - if it elicits nothing then clearly the piece isn't for you, or maybe you should culture yourself a bit. And if you're asking for an answer to a riddle then you don't deserve an answer - I'll try to explain the general onslaught against Coldplay.
They've brought absolutely nothing to music but have taken away so much (and no I don't mean money and fame). By you people listening to this mediocre, hackneyed shit you're condemning every artist with a modicum of passion and talent (this isn't in reference to Satriani). You don't even know what you like - the media just inculcates songs into your saftey zone until it begins to make you feel so comfortable you rather listen to this shit than a more worthwhile piece. So you may say, who gives a fuck - it makes me feel good. And to that I have no answer to give that would change anything. That's how I feel about the subject - but what do I know I've never heard a full song by them. teehee :x

How the fuck does that change the fact that they steal songs? Seriously lol, all you can come up with is a personal attack? hahaha damn I didn't even mention shit about them being mainstream or me being better than mainstream music listeners or whatever nonsense you somehow managed to get from my posts. THEY ARE THIEVES!

honestly, no one really gives a shit. a lot of people (including me) don't appreciate the fact that the song is plagiarized, but it's a good song nonetheless. so just enjoy it. unless you're that much of a coldplay antifan.
on-topic: I always thought it was an allusion to the French Revolution

I don't download torrents, mostly because my university would take away my internet forever. And it's not even remotely the same thing, artistic integrity and piracy really aren't related at all.

So there is absolutely no way that it happened to be a coincidence that the medlody of one song is similar to another?
It's a relatively basic composition of notes, not some obscure beat that nobody would have ever thought of. I don't listen to music but the claim is absolutely ridiculous imo.
Here you can check this youtube video out:
I don't think anyone copied anybody, it's just a nice progression of chords that were nice that they all happened to stumble upon.

?? i'm pretty sure getting something that doesn't belong to you, whether songs or lyrics, without paying for them or getting authority over it is stealing which is what thieves do last time i checked
so i'm pretty sure cloud is right on the fact that you're a hypocrite

That's correct, I believe there is absolutely no way this is a coincidence and honestly I believe this video proves rather than refutes that assertion. Notice that the similarities between Satriani and Frances Limon are about 2-3 seconds long and at a different tempo, whereas Coldplay Satriani is longer, at the same tempo, and way more similar.

This post deserves some more attention, I'm done arguing with you retards. Anyone who can't see the obvious lack of integrity on Coldplay's part just isn't even worth having an intelligent discussion with.

Yeah I'm a hypocrite for not downloading torrents? Or do you mean purely semantically since I used the phrase "they are thieves". Stealing a song off the internetz is in no way the same as stealing a song, changing it around, and selling it for profit.
