I wouldn't be surprised. The original founders of your city originated from near the Western Bresel Forest, where the tradition originated in ancient days when a forest dyrad charmed the local gnomes and humans into adopting it to prevent them from harvesting lumber from the forest. Evidently, she hoped most of them would freeze to death, but failed to consider that they would bring the trees inside their homes or burn fires around the conifer.
