If you want to change things into other things, I'd just take the spell. the homebrew polymorph i've seen is pick 6 and it's pretty fun. 2 Ground-bound forms, 2 forms that can fly and 2 forms that can swim, a form can overlap, but it takes up slots in both. forms are locked in for your character, and you can pick: A. any form 1 CR or lower , B. Any form CR up to 2 that you can heard about, C. any form CR up to 3 that you've seen illustrations of. D. CR up to 4 that you've seen personally, E. CR up to 6 that you've killed, dissected and studied. That gets you everywhere from hawks or imps to Chimeras but you have to pick 6 and stick with it, you don't have to pick all right away, you can keep a space and pick it in the future, but you lock in the choices. It also makes NPC polymorphs more interesting since every person that casts it has a different repertoire of shapes.

Honestly I'd be ok with those form restrictions even without the cap of 6. If I were keeping the form limitations, I would have the limit be on total CR worth of forms (rounding forms with CR <1 up to 1) rather than actual number of forms. It makes taking low CR forms pointlessly punishing so there's no meaningful reason why you'd actually take a 1 CR or lower form.

The homebrew also did something similar with Wild Shape and Shapechange with lesser restrictions (druids didnt have to dissect, but only live with the creature, and could change one form out per level), and shapechange was the high CR amount. The level thing was the same. you couldnt turn a beetle into a chimera, but you could turn yourself into a chimera. (since you were level 7+ to get polymorph anyway) Having low CR forms to polymorph enemies into was the reason to have them. and occasionally size comes up, there aren't many tiny or smaller high CR things.

It's not about whether I want to change things into other things necessarily yet. I might end up taking it later too (it's a pact feature and I only get one use per day so I don't even know if I want it)

It's Iris week again. ![]() However, this time we're starting at 02:00 GMT (+00:00), so make sure you show up earlier than normal! This will be the new start time, just so we can attempt to go to bed earlier. Also, MAKE SURE YOU'RE AT 7. Sorry I never came up with a good answer for the Polymorph thing. Part of me wants to say "Let's just go with no restrictions since I haven't run into a problem yet," but I don't want someone to have a power they like one way that I then feel the need to restrict. The other part of me just wants to go with PX's suggestion.

"Oh wait, we could just use Polymorph" gets old really fast, even when the realization is not at all deliberate.
