I still remember a funny anecdote that I'm still not sure how I feel about. I was 11 or 12 at the time and my friend was teasing me about being French (it was really teasing, nothing nasty about it). I decided to go complain to the bus driver about how she was teasing me, the bus driver being a friend of mine. Upon hearing me talking about how my friend should stop teasing me, the bus driver sort of angrily exploded about how the French were cowards who wouldn't go to war, damn the French, etc, etc. The bus driver had no idea I was French, since I'd lived in the USA since I was two years old and I was almost more American than French. Anyway, this bummed the shit out of me and I went back to my seat, crying. My friend was also bummed out about it and when her stop came she told the bus driver that I was French before getting off. The bus driver realized what he'd said and when my turn came to get off the bus he talked a bit about how he had once been to France and it was a beautiful country. I was kinda touched that he valued not being a dick to a buddy more than his hate for France being cowards. Today I still have a good memory of that bus driver. All in all it makes me think that the animosity between our countries really isn't that big a deal, mostly just teasing. At least today. Back in 2002-2004 it definitely wasn't the case. We ourselves respect Americans and their life styles (big cars, big lawns, all those stereotypes) yet we also make fun of some of their silly aspects. Like some of the things people sue for. ^^ That said I still get annoyed when I see people on the internet bashing France. I've seen this on TL as well. I of course never say anything, because there's simply nothing to be gained from it. Ignorant fools, what can I say. ;(

The French have probably had just as much conflict as any other European region, and I can only remember two wars that the French actually lost (Franco-Prussian and Napoleon's reign ended in defeat, but hell that doesn't even count as a loss). Not only that, France came up with the greatest military general in earth's history and the largest mainland European empire in the world's history (Napoleon the Great). Actually having a bloody history is something negative in terms of manliness. Yeah I know that sounds like it doesn't make sense, but see it this way. Throughout history there have been badasses who nobody dared to fuck with, like the spartans in their hardcore period, although technically they've been constantly in war since they declared war every year on their slaves(yep). Or the Prussians, after the Soldier king modernized their army. That people wage wars on you actually just means that their leaders are idiots (French-Prussian-War) or that they think that they could win against you. PS: Napoleon as the greatest military genius of the world?lol Oh and he was Italian(Corsica) and only rose so high because he was discriminated for being small and speaking with a weird accent as a child.

There will always be stereotypes an uneducated people to make the rest of us look bad, even in the esports/starcraft community. The best we can do is just follow the golden rule.

When you come from a poor family maybe, because the French system regarding scholarship and taxe reduction is ludicrous, for the rest of us, one actually has to pay a bit. Not that much over the course of a year, admittedly, but still a decent amount. I went into a pure public formation, elementary school, middle school, high school, classe préparatoire, Polytechnique. Never, ever, payed a single € for my formation. And I never had a scolarship. But yeah, if you want to go to the university, the French educational system is not that awesome. It's way more centered around Grandes Écoles regarding scientific training (which is the formation usually used as a benchmark).

It's not about manliness, it's about the fact that the French have never been cowards. And yes, Napoleon was one of the greatest (if not the greatest) military leaders of all time. And he was of Italian ancestry, but was born in French territory (Corsica was French territory at the time of his birth) and spent his whole life as a Frenchman. Just because I'm of dominantly Irish and German ancestry doesn't make me a non-American. His circumstances are completely irrelevant when talking about his nationality.

I just commented on his "moment of manly history", not the stereotype itself ![]() And I read a lot about Napoleon, and yeah he was good, maybe even one of the best, but he is also immensely overrated (though his actions did have big consequences ofc)

I think there are a decent amount French people that legitimately don't like Americans though, but that's obviously just minor racism. Most of the time it's just banter. We share heritage with the English, so we're always going to take England's side on things, including making fun of the french. Please let's not spout cliches with the intent of sounding intelligent and wise. Basic statistics says the opposite. I just wanted to say that just because there's one excepotion doesn't mean that something's entirely wrong. And saying I do it to sound intelligent just because you don't understand it is kinda mean ;_;
