Open a history book, maybe?

What do you disagree with?

French causing WW2 maybe?
I mean, it's wrong on so many levels I feel someone is trying to tell me the earth was square.

Sure, France lost, plainly and simply, the war. But how is that the cause of the war itself? What kind of odd twisted logic is this?

Edit: I mean, shall I remind you that Swede was neutral during the conflict and collaborated with the Wehrmach in many occasions?

Peace of versailles. The massive debt put on Germany after WW1 was illadviced, and caused a massive meltdown of the German economy that lasted until WW2 basically. That combined with the French pillage made Hitler's promise of revenge popular enough to rise to power. The lust for revenge was central in Hitler's ideology, and is mainly what made it so popular.

Well tell me, was this a decision made by the French people, a consequence of the behaviour of the French army, or simply a consequence of Clemenceau's political views, and his alone?

He was elected. Like Hitler; It's true, humiliation after WWI was the worth possible idea and killed the young republic of Weimach. We started them, helped by UK and USA (thats the reason why Hilter used to hate these countries too)

No, he was appointed by Poincaré (who was the elected president).

As someone who was born in France and lived for 10 years in the USA and is now living in France, bashing France originated after France refused to invade Iraq with the USA. This was just after 9/11 and invading the terrorist stronghold seemed like the right thing to do. America wanted retribution for 9/11. When they heard that France wasn't going to help them invade, they labelled us as cowards, basing it on the fact that we were steam-rolled in WW2 and that even now, we wouldn't go to war. Cheesy surrendering monkeys, that was a popular term in the press at the time. So bashing us and calling us cowards became a fun stereotype, even after USA's population finally saw that the war in Iraq was retarded. Of course things have changed and most Americans seem to have laid back on the name calling.

I still remember a funny anecdote that I'm still not sure how I feel about. I was 11 or 12 at the time and my friend was teasing me about being French (it was really teasing, nothing nasty about it). I decided to go complain to the bus driver about how she was teasing me, the bus driver being a friend of mine. Upon hearing me talking about how my friend should stop teasing me, the bus driver sort of angrily exploded about how the French were cowards who wouldn't go to war, damn the French, etc, etc. The bus driver had no idea I was French, since I'd lived in the USA since I was two years old and I was almost more American than French.
Anyway, this bummed the shit out of me and I went back to my seat, crying. My friend was also bummed out about it and when her stop came she told the bus driver that I was French before getting off. The bus driver realized what he'd said and when my turn came to get off the bus he talked a bit about how he had once been to France and it was a beautiful country. I was kinda touched that he valued not being a dick to a buddy more than his hate for France being cowards. Today I still have a good memory of that bus driver.

All in all it makes me think that the animosity between our countries really isn't that big a deal, mostly just teasing. At least today. Back in 2002-2004 it definitely wasn't the case. We ourselves respect Americans and their life styles (big cars, big lawns, all those stereotypes) yet we also make fun of some of their silly aspects. Like some of the things people sue for. ^^

That said I still get annoyed when I see people on the internet bashing France. I've seen this on TL as well. I of course never say anything, because there's simply nothing to be gained from it. Ignorant fools, what can I say. ;(

Okay, so here's my "manly history" moment.

French are not cowards, in fact France has one of the most violent histories in the world, waging war after war against every neighbour, and even against most of Europe during Napoleonic times. It is utterly false to say that the french have a history of losing or retreating. In medieval times the english court spoke french as the ruling dynasty was Norman; the Frank kingdom was one of the most powerful at the time; and so was the French kingdom during the Renaissance, and during the Lumières, too. French patriots ousted all foreign troops when a coalition tried to restore the French royalty, while severely outnumbered. Historians have given France the nickname of the "European China", because of its huge population during medieval times. Even the 100-year war wasn't a conflict between France and England, but mostly between two dynasties, and the side of the Valois (France) was vastly outnumbered by the attacks of Burgandy, Brittany, Flanders and Portugal.

But the French army was humiliated during WW2, and even before that in 1870, and the peaceful statu quo carved this in stone. This is very bad for national pride, you know?

I always find it incredibly frustrating when people push forward the BS stereotype that the French are cowards and always lose. The French have probably had just as much conflict as any other European region, and I can only remember two wars that the French actually lost (Franco-Prussian and Napoleon's reign ended in defeat, but hell that doesn't even count as a loss). Not only that, France came up with the greatest military general in earth's history and the largest mainland European empire in the world's history (Napoleon the Great).

Actually having a bloody history is something negative in terms of manliness.
Yeah I know that sounds like it doesn't make sense, but see it this way.
Throughout history there have been badasses who nobody dared to fuck with, like the spartans in their hardcore period, although technically they've been constantly in war since they declared war every year on their slaves(yep).
Or the Prussians, after the Soldier king modernized their army.
That people wage wars on you actually just means that their leaders are idiots (French-Prussian-War) or that they think that they could win against you.

PS:
Napoleon as the greatest military genius of the world?lol
Oh and he was Italian(Corsica) and only rose so high because he was discriminated for being small and speaking with a weird accent as a child.

In every nation you can point out flaws with any particular group of people. This thread serves no purpose other then for european countries to circle suck themselves while bashing americans. What point if any does that serve...

Nearly all of the great scientists at American universities are foreign born and educated.

Even still, the fact that the education is good can't be a point AGAINST America.

Higher education and specialized formation has to be centered somewhere. America is convenient because it's big and has a lot of money.
In general, the education in America (undergraduate) is about as good as in the rest of the world.

Btw, I really feel bad for all the French here thinking our educationnal system suck. I come from a poor family and am now in the best engineering school in France, being paid around 800€ a month just to study, without having anything to give back. Just because I proved through French examinations that I deserved it.
I don't think there's a lot of countries where you have that kind of opportunities, and you can have access to the higher education in your country without ever having to pay anything.

Without ever having to pay anything ? When you come from a poor family maybe, because the French system regarding scholarship and taxe reduction is ludicrous, for the rest of us, one actually has to pay a bit. Not that much over the course of a year, admittedly, but still a decent amount.

I went into a pure public formation, elementary school, middle school, high school, classe préparatoire, Polytechnique. Never, ever, payed a single € for my formation. And I never had a scolarship.

But yeah, if you want to go to the university, the French educational system is not that awesome. It's way more centered around Grandes Écoles regarding scientific training (which is the formation usually used as a benchmark).

It's not about manliness, it's about the fact that the French have never been cowards. And yes, Napoleon was one of the greatest (if not the greatest) military leaders of all time. And he was of Italian ancestry, but was born in French territory (Corsica was French territory at the time of his birth) and spent his whole life as a Frenchman. Just because I'm of dominantly Irish and German ancestry doesn't make me a non-American. His circumstances are completely irrelevant when talking about his nationality.

I just see it as somewhat friendly rivalry. I think there are a decent amount French people that legitimately don't like Americans though, but that's obviously just minor racism. Most of the time it's just banter. We share heritage with the English, so we're always going to take England's side on things, including making fun of the french.

I just commented on his "moment of manly history", not the stereotype itself
And I read a lot about Napoleon, and yeah he was good, maybe even one of the best, but he is also immensely overrated
(though his actions did have big consequences ofc)

Which is ridiculous since the German war machine was so strong that it took four major powers combined AND the Nazis being stupid enough to invade Russia for them to lose.

The Americans and French seem to be the two most arrogant, nationalistic nations when it comes to their tourists. I dont find it that surprising that the Americans hate the only other nation as obnoxious as themselves. Of course these are generalisations and there are many intelligent, quiet-spoken americans/french. I have friends from both countries after all. It's just that every other nationality i've run into seem, on average, to be less full of themselves.
