And let's not forget that we're not the only ones who got PWNT by the Nazis. I'm thinking of Netherlands for exmaple, which was overrun in 5 days.

Second, please do not forget that there is a quite strong anti americanism in France too, which is sometimes nationalistic (in the tradition of De Gaulle, and the refusal to be either pro US or pro USSR in the cold war, although France was de facto rather on the US side); sometimes anti imperialist (so more leftist). Sometimes it can be a mix of both! (like the French communist party in the 60's defending French wine against Coke). Third, Some recent events have degraded Franco american relations (which overall remain friendly), for instance the refusal of France to go to war. in Iraq. I still remember stories at that time, about the US changing "French" fries into "freedom" fries... This might explain some of it. Fourth, overall, I am afraid there is nationalism and nationalist jokes everywhere around the world, from all countries against all countries. Yet, US nationalism is quite strong I would say (I was so suprised of how many Americans have US flags in their home; this would be considered very strange and far right in France). Nationalism leading to the hatred of the other, as history has shown so many times, this could explain that. (and in this regard, "france bashing" is far from being the main concern... Muslim identity for instance is much more in trouble I would say; as communists were under MacCarthysm in the 1950's - I mean potentially, not at the moment).

Making a link between a very recent and hotly controversed law and a whole population seems very intelligent. Nice to see you have an objective opinion on the matter.

They have so many people with strong nationalistic attitude that just pisses off everybody else. I have nothing against these people who believe their country is the absolute best (when it's not), I just think it's silly, but I understand why the world doesn't like these countries. And the Italians are not?? There live so many Italians in Switzerland who doesn't know our language after 20 fucking years, because they seperate in groups with other Italians and refuse the integrate. And that's not the minority. It's a very Italian thing. @Topic In Switzerland we don't make that many jokes about the French but rather about the Americans. I think the thing with the French is, that they are very proud of their country and sometimes refuse to learn ot her languages, because they still see themselves as the very best culture. This has changed with the youth I believe.

As a German I know countless of jokes about you guys(though you probably know some about us aswell). I have a difficult relationship with you frenchies, simply because I had bad luck with french people I met on the internet. To be frank, most of them were assholes, but there were nice guys too so I generally ask myself if my thoughts about france and french people were caused by my personal experiences with them, since I might have met A LOT of people I didn't like from there(writing that sounds mean lol), but I refuse to believe that they were assholes because they were french. So I try to meet you with the respect and friendliness I meet everybody else with too.

The coffee shop/bar is still a central place in most rural areas, but it's no longer the case in cities. Tho the fact that french people love to enjoy life and do simple things is still quite true, most people aren't in a hurry. That's where the lazy stereotype comes from, along our numerous work law (35hour is just the most publicized one but far from being the most important)

France usually take decision alone, Chirac decide to not engage our army into the Irak war. That's the type of decision who makes believe that we've got a lot of proud or something. Yes, if you go to Paris you'll see more people avoiding you than help you. Is it so different from other country when you're at the capital ? And for the french tourist, I certainly believe it's a minority who piss everybody. It's always the same for every country. I can say that I hate german for going into the south of France with their big mercedes and stuff, or the dutch with their caravan. It's also a minority but there is always one to see. So yeah I think french bashing is just "more famous" because of our past / present. But certainly not an exception
