I thought some of you guys might enjoy this. It's a portable version of Starcraft for Linux. The files are both an ELF executable AND an ISO image, so you can chmod u+x it and run it, or fuseiso it and mount it. It has a minimal wine installation inside, so you should not need to have anything installed on the machine to run it, besides fuse so the executable can mount itself (which is almost always already installed).

I don't think it'll work on bnet, but may do the trick for quick LAN skirmishes. I have almost not tested them, so things might not work as they should.

The last time I downloaded something from megaupload, my computer was infected with a horse porn virus, which is like a regular virus, only with horse porn.

Thus, I would appreciate it greatly if you could provide a bit more information about what, exactly, I would be downloading.

Thank you, good sir.

Edit: Linux has been good to me and if somebody can confirm that this is legit, I will be overjoyed.

Hm, to confirm it's legit, you could mount the ISO images, go to drive_c/blahblahblah and confirm the md5 of the files in the Starcraft installation is the same as the ones in the ICC and monikon version (I got them in an old 2009 thread here, but the ICC is updated, so the Launcher.exe will be different)

Besides, the only other files that are run when the package is executed, are the AppRun, which is a bash script that creates ~/.starcraft/ and runs "wine Starcraft.exe", and wine itself, which is a minimal version of the latest wine I downloaded from ubuntu repositories (wine1.3_1.3.4-0ubuntu1~lucidppa1_i386); you can md5 all the binaries and libraries.

Then, there's only the ELF itself, which I'm not sure where it exactly comes from. It's been created using "AppImageAssistant 0.8" from http://portablelinuxapps.org/ , and you can find the source code in http://portablelinuxapps.org/source/ (looks outdated, though)

Alternatively, just burn some live USB using http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and run starcraft on a read-only operative system; that way you'll be safe from any harm on the internets

Starcraft runs on Linux without any tricks, just install wine or play on linux. I doubt that you will be able to play your games in battlenet, I didn't try anyway, cause Starcarft runs in wine like chit,its choppy and slow, widescreen users will play a widescreen starcraft, that should be configured separately, well all in all its a Pain in the ass, so I never bother to setup any games under Linux except for textmode quests. Instead I left some space for my windows partition, and happily dualboot.
But still thanks, I will keep in it in mind.

I have to say, after a little bit of registry tweaking and the like, Starcraft BroodWar ran almost perfectly for me, except that the Battlenet menus were messed up somewhat (and even then, there was a patch that could make a fix of sorts for that). I was happily playing BW on iCCUp (badly) right until Starcraft 2 came out.

There are so many factors that can affect the performance (your operating system, graphics card, driver versions library versions, what Wine registry entries you use, what version of wine you use - there are still bugs being inserted and removed that affect Starcraft performance) that saying a sweeping generalisation like 'Starcraft runs in wine like shit' is almost certainly going to be wrong.

The worst (or best) you can really say is that your mileage may vary. I find BroodWar works well for me under Linux.

Do you know what registry tweaks and wine version work best with BW? The beauty of these packages is we can embed the wine version and registry tweaks we want, and they'll be the same on every machine, disregarding the installed version of Wine, etc. We could even use different registry settings for nvidia and amd users, use tweaks for widescreen users, etc.

Also hoers pron thread =|

Dear Sirs and Madams,

It disappoints me that, while I did bring up a legitimate concern, nobody has so much as given the time of day to what could potentially be a wonderful resource to those peoples in the community that uses Linux and can't get BW to work properly for the life of them.

In fact, since my post describing the tragic events that had, at some point, befallen me, none of you have even responded to the content of the OP and have continued to circle-jerk in what you guys seem to have misinterpreted as a naughty joke.

I'm new here, so I can only presume how things run around here based on the handful of threads I've seen and the amazingly well-written commandments, but this community does not seem like one that would either:
1.) Leave an OP offering malicious software open... or
2.) Spend 100% of the responses in a thread rambling off topic.

What is this? Reddit?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Edit:
So apparently, this is just a CD-rip and thus, this thread should be closed immediately since this is in clear violation of copyright policies, and since TL does not harbor pirates.

It's the same thing, but you put it into a computer running Linux instead of one running Windows, and you don't need to have Wine installed ahead of time.

I tested the monikon version, ICC is unavailable at megaupload
lol took me a while to realize i didn't have fuseiso, but it works. installed and used acetoneiso to mount (which installed fuseiso w\ it)
theres nothing wrong with the script and if theres any viruses it would be within starcraft or the wine binary but I dont think there is.

I don't think so, I've bought my copy of Starcraft Antology (and Starcraft II), this is just the most convenient way for me to play it. Also, got both from here.

I highly doubt it's the most convenient way to play it in that if you have wine, just popping in the disc and installing gives you exactly the same no-cd functionality.

I think a LiveUSB would be sexier (who uses CDs nowadays anyway), and you can make one using http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and one of those images.

Why build what has [possibly] been already built? That's why I ask.

It seems for a LAN center or whatnot a preconfigured SCBW livedistro would be sweet. Incredibly easy to setup and takedown, also webbrosing/viruses/etc would have no chance to affect the media.

edit
@ RAZZ

Does SCBW work natively in Linux [i didnt think it did?] I think the distro would have to be preset with wine working with SC out of boot. That is where I would need to be "creative".

Of course then the LIVEUSB would function more like a portable OS, which is also good for personal use, but not for deployment.

I love unetbootin!

Yes, SCBW does work natively with the latest stable version of wine. So long as the image has wine and SCBW installed, you're good to go.

But you could always play SC in your Linux server management course(and fail!). This provides you no additional resource that the original BW+wine did not.

But I'm too lazy to go through the effort of installing it with wine. It sounds long-ish, and everything on my Linux machine is pretty much wiped when I logout, so I'd have to do it every time. This sounds much faster

Oh cool! I should use this then, since, just as Linux is so much better than Windows, we all know that BW is so much better than SC2.

Well, in my case, the EEE901 I have to use until I buy a better computer runs much better on Ubuntu than on Windows, and given the shitty HD I'm always out of space, so I end up having all my games and some applications on a SDHC card, and this is where all these packages from portablelinuxapps.org come handy

Does this version allow you to start BW with the ICCUP Launcher on Linux? I've never been able to get the antihack to run/update with Wine -> no LAN latency -> no playing BW on linux. (I can't try this version now)

I'm sorry for derailing this topic. For the record, I was also the one who brought it back on track! And apparently there is some utility to this for those people like Grobyc!

Sorry I'm late but, ROFL!!!

Dunno, I ran the Launcher.exe that came in the package I downloaded with wine, and it updated to the newest version, which also runs. I just tried, and Launcher.exe doesn't run in the package I uploaded (you can test it extracting the package as an ISO file and editing the AppRun script to run Launcher.exe instead of Starcraft.exe), because I deleted some libraries it uses and the game doesn't (wsock32.dll,wininet.dll,winhttp.dll,oleaut32.dll,mpr.dll,wininet.dll,ws2_32.dll,iphlpapi.dll,wsock32.dll). After restoring those dlls, Launcher.exe runs fine, and it even launches the game. I don't know what else to test, I know nothing about ICCUP but if you want it can be packaged again with these changes.

First I'd like to say that I have bought a legitimate copy of starcraft.

Then I'd like to hint at this website that the community supports called ICCUP

Does anyone know of a Wine version that doesn't crash when entering ICC's bnet server? Right now this seems the only thing preventing this package from working completely fine.

Hmm I never had a problem entering the server... The bnet interface is always messed up though.

We don't harbor people who searches for horse porn either.

Also, iccup has been hosting the multiplayer component of the game on their website for forever, and the last time i checked it's not malicious. Blizzard doesn't give a shit. We don't either. If it makes you feel better i actually own the game.

Meh, I tried with wine 1.3, 1.2 and 1.0, none of them worked for me. Anyway, here's a second version of the package I uploaded overnight (rural "broadband" sucks), I added the posibility to run the launcher (running "./StarCraft 1.16.1icc-r2 icc"; or just "./StarCraft 1.16.1icc-r2 icc" to run the game as always), added some libraries I missed, fixed read only map and characters directories, tweaked the registry with ICC's additions and graphics configuration (works for me, you mileage may vary, edit ~/.starcraft-icc/user.reg>DirectDrawRenderer if the game runs slow for you), etc. You will probably need to rm -rf ~/.starcraft-icc before running the new package.

By the way, does anyone know how to properly change the paths where savegames and characters are stored? I have this registry entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (system.reg)

[Software\\Blizzard Entertainment\\Starcraft\\DelOpt0] 1286671912
"File0"="spc"
"File1"="mpc"
"Path0"="Y:\\.starcraft-icc\\characters"
"Path1"="Y:\\.starcraft-icc\\characters"

but they seem to be ignored.

Fixed retarded bug that prevented the game from running twice without removing ~/.starcraft-icc, and added <app> conf option to run winecfg (if anyone wants to use a virtual desktop or whatever).

I just tried it out on my university's computers (all of them run Linux), and it works flawlessly, full speed on 21.5 panoramic inches! Labs are gonna get SO interesting.

Besides, there's a stupid bug I didn't see that prevents the Readme.txt from showing up, but who cares.

My mouse is extremely inaccurate in wine. Starcraft on Windows is much smoother, provided that you disable mouse acceleration in the registry. Anyone share this experience?

I don't have any trouble with mission red under Linux so I doubt it's some exotic X configuration.

i'll test it out, when i find the time... had always some mouselag/framerate issues with SC and Linux, thats the only reason i have XP on my laptop

edit: still unplayable - i think its bc of a bug concerning intel onboard graphicscard

You can try tuning the registry. In ~/.starcraft-icc/user.reg, you have

[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D]
"DirectDrawRenderer"="dri"
"RenderTargetLockMode"="readtex"
"PixelShaderMode"="enabled"
"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"
;; DirectDrawRenderer = dri, opengl, gdi, glsl

Which are the options that I think work better in my computer, but you can play with them, specially with DirectDrawRenderer. I think "opengl" is commonly used, but "dri" worked better for me. No idea about "dri" or "glsl". About the other options, you can try commenting them with ;; before the line and see if something changes.

Indeed, the only dependency we assume besides the LSB is fuse.
