sAviOr < Demon's Forest > Sea

XellOs < Troy > July

This is it gentlemen, in most cases these games determine whether there will be a round of tiebreakers or if there will be a straight advance. The only player here with nothing to gain is Savior, everyone else needs to win their game today to stay alive. Thus, i would expect a couple cheese builds tonight. July is likely to do another stupid all in and Flash could very well do something as well. Despite the 'lesser' quality of gamers this time round, these games could very well be the best of the whole group stage so don't miss it.
* * * * *
Official Warning!!!!! Nobody ask about how to watch or where to watch or "omg my stream lags!!!" from now on. Consider this your official warning. Everything from here on out is a 2-day temp ban.

sAviOr going 0-2 in MSL and 0-3 in OSL would be too sad for words. I think he needs to win this damn game just to get that stupid win, as meanningless as it may be.

i want savior to play well again too, but it cant happen now
it just cant

XELLOS COME ON, YOU MUST WIN SO BISU HAS A CHANCE!!!!
|
Savior still plays well he just mixes in some very dumb stuff into his games. Maybe hes sandbaggin? Like engaging the terrans first push out at the terrans choke or mid map instead of at the last second. Trying a build against Bisu that he used before on a different toss using Bisus build.

I think Savior has incentive to win any game at the moment, just to regain his pride.

And keep his fans, and please his coach, and keep his status amongst his peers. Not to mention that like most people, I'm sure he just plain wants to win as much as possible.
Motivation is a complex thing, but I think it's very rare for any progamer to go into a match not feeling like trying their best. If they're having confidence problems, or suffering from a lack of drive, they may end up making poor choices, or just playing below their usual (or potential) standard, but that's not the same thing as not even trying.
Edit: However much we may like to criticize the play of the weaker players, they're still very strong StarCraft gamers by any objective standard, and perfectly capable of capitalizing upon lapses. When a win rate over 60% is a big deal, you've got a pretty close competition.

Presumably Demon's Forest. Tiebreaker games are still part of the round of 16.
|
Savior should throw this game and let sea go on. This will make jaedong available for elimination.
|
Go Savior!!! It'd be badass if he completely man-handled Sea for no reason on this map :D MA JAE YOON!!! <3
edit: every match-up looks potentially good tonight, hope staying up's worth it
|
Hungary11291 Posts
Savior should NEVER throw this game. Eliminating Jaedong is not worth giving up his pride. In terms of interesting games, it would be great though to have JD / Best / Sea rematch.
I want Stork to beat Flash, so we can see yet another tiebreaker. Flash / Rock rematch should be funny.
Xellos doesn't have a bad shot at beating July. He looked bad against Luxury, but Lux is playing really well these days. July against Upmagic on the other hand ...
Much should be able to beat Yarnc, so that we have him and Frozean advancing.
edit: If my tendency to misbet OSL continues, we will see Savior / Flash / July / Yarnc winning. So watch out for that.

On February 01 2008 17:17 pachi wrote: I think Savior has incentive to win any game at the moment, just to regain his pride. On the other side Jaedong wasted him losing last game, so Savior has nothing to play for. He can be angry at Jaedong and lose on purpose just to force 3-way tie for Jaedong. I know I am going too far, but I am scared for my LB point. Anyway gogo Savior!

Flash also expanded once his factory was done, he might be able to vulture raid Stork soon. Stork's expansion is up though.
|
This build by stork is just asking flash to do some all-in scv rush.
|
|
Ok nvm, Flash responds to Storks expo before gas with his own 1 factory CC.
|
lol 6th sense dragoon dodges mines
|
Hungary11291 Posts
Stork has good timing, has his goons out when the vultures arrive and now a robotics going up. Flash going for an armory.
|
i still cant believe savior couldnt defend 4 marines... i dont think im exaggerating when i say that I could have hold that. He wasted his 6 lings against the marines without pulling drones the first time, after that it was over. It is SO easy to defend that. When sea had his 4-5 rines on saviors ramp savior should have picked 4-6 drones and DRONE DRILL them through his ramp simultaneously attacking with his 6 lings. Im sure that would have been easily defended that way. But no, he wasted his lings against 5 rines on his own ramp w/o pulling a single drone. As I said, im sure even I could have defended that, as this was VERY easy to hold (marines w/o scvs and u have a ramp... come on...). Worse reaction than B level Zs on iccup t.t

Sly CC for flash at the top of his main to float to min only or top left
|
ouch flash scored on those probes
|
Flash sneaks in a few vultures and takes out a ton of probes at Stork's nat!
|
Hungary11291 Posts
Flash getting a CC in the north of his base, to float it to min only, Stork ready with his reaver drop. Havent seen any tanks for Flash yet, he has a machine shop spinning, so siege is probably just rolling.
ARgh, stream skips, shows a reaver dieing after not having achieved too much. Apparently the early Goliaths got the shuttle.Vulture raid kills many probes and forces them away from the expansion, as stork's goons have moved out.
|
Hungary11291 Posts
Four tanks and many scvs stand guard against Storks goon force outside flash's natural. Flash is getting a scifac, probably for EMP.

Hungary11291 Posts
Flash pushing out against Stork's goon only force, with some tanks / goliaths / vultures. Flash is equalling economy as he sets up his min only. He shot down one shuttle near his natural. Looking good for KTF's hope.

I really enjoy seeing Sci Vessels used TvP. Here's hoping...

lol stork is playing so bad
flash's build is cool too
|
Second armory making, SciFac is already up, CC making at top left expo
Stork is taking bottom right
|
It's a good thing Stork expanded to the min only he needs 3 nexus to replace all those lost probes.
|
Flash is already +1 weapons, looks like he's getting +2 instead of vessels. Both players take the corner expos.
Stork does a Dt and reaver drop in Flash's natural, kills a good amount of scvs, but loses the shuttle.

3rd shuttle dies with 1dt and a reaver on board

I love Flash's build. He's going to rip Stork apart.

Hungary11291 Posts
Stork with a great job at breaking Flash's push, storming into the Min only now. Looking better for the Bird now. IN fact he hit top left, where Flash has yet another expansion and will be able to break through there. SCVs run away just before the storm hits them.
|
Flash's vultures take out 4 HTs before using any storms!!! But Stork just charges in and flanks Flashs tanks with a ton of zealots! Stork wins a big battle!

damn, one sloppy push and this game went straight down the shitter for flash.

Stork getting Arbiters now, his ground forces are only 0-0-1 though compared to Flash's heavy grades. He found the 12 expansion, Flash is hurrying for defending it.

But every big battle they ensued Stork was able to get his zealots by the tanks. The first big battle, the one that turned the game around, Stork did a reaver/dt drop at 12, so Flash sent all his vultures there. Then Stork retreated his shuttle (using DT as bait) with reaver in it, and sent his army into Flash's army. Flash's vultures were still up at 12, unaware of the assault. By the time Flash realizes Stork's attack his vultures are too late to protect the tanks.
Then it happened again when Flash almost secured the middle the second time. This time he used his arbiters to cover the zealots. By the time Flash realized it and scanned, the zealots had gotten themselves close to Flash's tanks and wreak havoc again.
So yea, Flash built up a nice advantage, but Stork used some excellent battling techniques to win the big ones.

in the first big battle, not enough mines, bad tank positioning
i mean stork had great macro for sure, but this game went against everything i knew about PvT... usually losing 1 shuttle+reaver = death, stork lost 3, and still managed to break flash's army with lots left over, how nuts
edit: yeah L2W, all three times Stork tried to break, he first dropped something somewhere so Flash would send some units back
|
Any Terran player knows that a game can slip out of your fingers if you make 1 small mistake. It's so very delicate. Flash moved his force at the wrong time, in the wrong position, sieged 1 second too late, and lost his entire army. The game was lost since that moment.

They replayed the critical battle and it looked even worse the 2nd time. 2/3s flash's tanks were unsieged and forward of the rest of his army, Flash had no vults because he used them to snipe temps, and there were no mines on the ground either.
|

ok replay right now.
I was wrong. The first attack, the big one was before the dt/reaver drop at 12. Flash had 2-1 upgrades, wihle Stork had 1-0-0.
I think the only reason Stork won that battle is 1. Great unit positioning. When his goons fall be hind he manually brought them up closer to the tanks. 2. Few mines, did little damage to Zealots. 3. Few vultures. This was ironic. Flash first got more goliaths and vultures to defend the reaver drop, which he did. Then he gathered vultures, but lost about 6/7 in his probe hunt in Stork's base, then lost another 6~8 when he went templar hunting. Stork attacks right at thtat moment when Flash used up his vultures and needed to make more. Also the few that he had were moving back retreating behind the tanks, rather than shooting oncoming zealots. And there were no mines to kill them either.

Yeah really. Hopefully Xellos can stop July's probable all in. Thats all he seems to do nowadays. Up was able to stop both of them fairly well.

After all these "save Bisu" posts, it will be amusing if Xellos forces the breaker and then knocks Bisu out to claim the spot himself. It's hard not to want Bisu to advance though. He's usually good fun in any multi-game series against another player.

I think the question is why didnt he leave 1 marine in the bunker

I'm hoping for Bisu to proxy gate July and win that myself, tbh. I don't think July/Xellos are actually playing strong enough to win their tiebreaker against Bisu, unless they pull off an allin/similar strategy. Rock/Flash/Rumble could be good however, and Sea/Best/Jaedong should be good. It depends on if Sea decides to play horribly as he did against Jaedong/Light and if Best delivers as well.

man those screaming banshees-i mean schoolgirls- are a real pest. this one time, at a savior vs bisu game, there was one standing about a meter or so away from me; she yelled savior's name so loud i thought i'd gone deaf on one ear...
|
Hes not "pumping" lings. But merely making enough to react to 2 zeal harass if it came. It didnt though. Much has another cannon going up and his gosu probe sees the hydra den. A quick citadel/archive down. Plus a fast second gate-- no stargate. Lair is done for zerg...spire going up. Interesting reaction from zerg. Maybe he will go muta knowing much saw the den.
|
yay beautaliskus, go go go
edit: lol so much for that
|
anybody else thinks the maps this season are the worst in starleagues for ages? its almost exclusively been shitty games every week...
|
Sunk going up at the zerg main. 1 dt out. As well as 1 temp. Zerg lacks detection at his main. Much playing safe. Makes 3 cannons at his nat. Sees he expects/wants to prepare just in case for muta. Only one cannon at his main nexus min line. Some muta out..not many though, like6. Much reacts well and storm them right away, 4 goons chase them off.
|

are the tie-breakers gonna use that one map they're eliminating from the map pool after ro16?
|
The other templar storms right away when the mutas come back, and then morphs with the other. Evo down for zerg. Lurks morphing but much has a huge goon army. No robo yet though. Almost done. Looking good for much. However lurks are slowing down his attempt to take his second nat while zerg takes a 4th base. 2 more evos down. Reacting to the mass goons with triple ups hydra/ling most likely.
|
wow that's a lot of lurkers dying i hear...
edit: what a rape
|
Much adds 2 more gates for a total of 6. Zerg has ovie speed finally. Obs out! Much crushes the small forces delaying his 2nd nat, he should take it soon. Zerg setting up hydra/lurk to slow the advancement. But much has more than one ob. This is critical right now. Zerg has 5 ovies loaded up ! Much breaking the front. One ob goes down. Zerg trying to flank but much too strong. Stops that cold. Another attack force from the front. Some goons go down but its stoped as well. 12 zealots comming to reenforce!
|
TheFoReveRwaR could you say "up" when they build stuff and "down" when they destroy stuff instead? =(
|
Much is at the zerg front with 20 or so goons and some zeals. Looking unstopable unless zergpulls a LOT of units from no where. He might just do that. But hes taking huge damage.
|
okay okay stupid post
|
Some lings stop the trailing temps but its too late. Yarnc overextends himself 2 base against 4. Much had a great unit mix when he moved out and just rolled everything.
|
Yarnc looks upset and ggs.

okay wasnt a stupid post at all yarn wastet his mass lurx (vs almost goons only O.o) one by one

Yarncs' should have nailed that first observer with his mutas, that could have bought him enought time to hold. Much had some nice unit control and reinforced his goons with zeals just in time.

it might as well have been, the point isnt the specific commands issued its how completely over the game was when july's drone missed the barracks
and he's not an idiot not to cancel the hatchery. what are you talking about? an extra hatchery means more larva and the ability to make sunken colonies. cancelling the hatchery doesn't do anything, there's no way you can get sunkens up in time in your main if there's no longer a fat target at your nat

There's a difference between the way Bisu and Savior have gone in this OSL so far, though. Savior played horribly in all three games, Bisu lost to a timed all in on his weakest PvZ map and was hit with a 5pool which many noted was only going to work 1/3 times, which Bisu scouted last. I agree Bisu needs to step his game the hell up if he wants to make it past the Ro8, but I don't think we've actually seen enough straight up losses to say he's 'dead' yet.
After all, that is how we identified Savior was slumping, wasn't it?

But we've seen zerg's pull some crazy shit before. I remember an Arcadia game where Yooi pulls a BBS center rax rush on Savior, who did 12 hatch, lost most of his drones and failed to stop the bunker, but still come out and win on that.
We've also seen July pull craziest comeback games vs bunker rushes (though most not BBS) before.

Anyway, we have in Ro8:
Group winners: Stork, Much, Luxury, [JD / Sea / Best] Group 2nds: Frozean, [Bisu / Xellos / July], [JD / Sea / Best], [Rock / Flash / Rumble]
The rest is undecided, wow . All the tiebreakers have three races represented and so far we have 2 x P, 1 x Z and 1 x T in Ro8.

He would have ~300 extra minerals. And with proper drone micro he could have delayed the marines till sunks are up.

that wouldn't really change the final outcome. two proxied barracks get marines to a zerg base really, really fast.

I think Stork is looking as strong as ever, winning against all three races.

in my opinion the most impressive 3-0 was by luxury, really kind of surprising. stork had two losers and his kicktoy flash in his group, much had two losers and yarnc
luxury had two legends who are playing like losers and bisu, but luxury is more of a loser than stork and much in OSL

I don't know if canceling the hatch would have been better but he would have had to make a sunken and lings that would be useless once the geysers go down, playing 1 base island. And that's assuming he manages to hold the 2 rax constant rine pump.

Of course the problem still remains that Xellos would just back off and kill the assimilators and trap July in, which is probably why he chose to use that strat on this map specifically.

xellos stalled his marines, he didnt rally directly to july's nat
there was less time to cancel and make a creep colony in his main than you think there was

I would say that Stork and Much did what there was to do, without too much fanciness. Ok, Stork's display against Flash was marvellous, but apart from that he did his job, which is dominate until quarters / semis and then forget goon range. That is the Stork we know.
Much on the other hand had arguably a rather weak group (thanks to seniority bonus) and performed as he was supposed to - which should not serve to lower the respect, playing as good as you are expected to still takes some effort (hello Bisu).
Luxury on the other hand was far from the clear favourite in his group, which was probably the toughest one apart from group 1 (which, after Savior's abysmal performance, appears less group-of-deathly now). Against July, Bisu, and Xellos he was never the clear favourite. If you check Liquibet, Luxury was 293 - 418 against July, 438 - 298 against Xellos and 156 - 611 against Bisu. While you can question the expertise of Liquibetters, this clearly shows that Luxury performed alot better than expected and thus also as the most impressive of the 3-0 guys.
edit: Besides, all the group winners beat all three races. Fascinating that an allocation of 2 x A, B, C always yields a group winner of race A. Quite imbalanced.

While theorycrafting about how July could've defended Xellos's attack, you guys are forgetting something. You need a hatchery, to have creep, to build creep/sunken colonies. If the hatchery is canceled, there will be no sunkens and you're gonna be stuck inside your base.
Although July couldn't pull off some insane comeback today, it was probably not possible since he failed to scout the proxy.

Funny how Frozean and Luxury are both in the quarters now. I wrote those guys off 1~1.5 years ago after numerous failed attempts to qualify.
Good to see them finally living up to their potential, allthough I see way more potential in Luxury if he can clean up his ZvP(which he seems to be on the way of doing).
I always had the impression Frozean had a stellar TvZ from replays a couple of years ago, however as of late, its his TvP games that have been convincing, while his TvZ seems sloppy but with macro to maintain a decent level.

You need a hatchery, to have creep, to build creep/sunken colonies. If the hatchery is canceled, there will be no sunkens and you're gonna be stuck inside your base.
Although July couldn't pull off some insane comeback today, it was probably not possible since he failed to scout the proxy.
Um, thats what theyre talking about. Sunkens in the main.
Regardless, it is possible to defend a proxy BB bunker rush even with 12 hatch poor scouting, but its really really really hard. Especially on Troy where early aggression can trap your opponent in his base for a long time. So basically, 12 hatch is a pretty dumb idea on Troy, and July should have been extra wary of early rush cheese, and he was just kinda oblivious.

I expect Luxury to be fine, but I doubt Frozean is going to get very far. How he keeps qualifying for OSL is beyond me. He got past the group stage because his group was fairly weak.

Interesting how Jaedong started the OSL with a bang, dominating the first 2 games, and now has a chance of being eliminated.
The curse is strong!

YEAHHHHhh go Twins. Everyone that was a hopeful prospect years ago have finally begun to realize their potential.
This is a sad/wierd but interesting time in progaming.

Flash needs to get his TvP shit back together and return to cheesing.
|
yeah seriously, with his 9-0 record versus protoss and 2232 ELO to start off almost made his cheesing look like a sustainable style

4/4 easy today ! yesterday was crap

what a great day in the osl

At least us savior fanboys accepted the fact that savior is dead atm, funny that most bisu fanboys havent quite gotten that bisu is dead too. with his current form, he wont go anywhere near finals.
He's not dead. Wanna fight about it?

Beesuit is not dead WTF are you talking about? Its retards like these that make me cringe sometimes when reading these kind of threads. Goddamn stupid fan boys, listen Bisu didn't play sloppily in his recent games, vs Jaedong he played very well but did mistakes and same vs Yellow, July all-ined him by suprise and luxury 9-pooled him so Bisu is not playing bad.

Menziek, I think we all know who the real fanboy is.

I just got home today to watch the games and I just have to burst out loud (although it's prolly been said a dozen times) but holy crap the PvT by Stork @ Flash. What an amazing play to make it out of mid game after all those failed initiatives. Any other Protoss would have been absolutely steamrolled there.
I'm so totally impressed by the setup-breaks he pulled off towards the mid/late game. Stork fighting!

as fun as SC is, it would be hard to imagine a whole career at it... playing.. then coaching... Life would be rather narrow don't you think? i guess i should see sports the same way. entertainment is entertainment.

how come the fangirls (and some boys lol) were so crazy in the much vs. yellow game and quiet when xellos and savior played ????? As for the games, not very surprising results. I did expect savior to put up a better fight though

Just watched the games and read the comments and wanted to add that : Who knows? Maybe Jaedong is the unlucky guy who will play Flash twice, I mean yes Jaedong is Jaedong, but if there is someone who can beat him in bo3 or bo5 at the moment this is Flash and Bisu eventually
edit: wrong thread so sorry
