NEW YORK CITY STARLEAGUE
Season 2: Battle of K-Town

THE GOAL
It is my hope that this will be the best BW LAN tournament in the US since SC2's release, with the biggest prize pool, largest turn-out, and greatest after-LAN party. I want this to be a featured event on TL with a live stream and casters. Come join us as we have a ton of fun playing/watching some great games while at the same time showing the TL community THE WORLD that BW still lives on and refuses to die.

THE BATTLEFIELD
"NetZone" LAN Center in Korea-Town
28 West 32nd Street, 5th Floor
New York, NY 10001

COMMENCEMENT
January 5th, 2013
1:00 PM / 13:00 EST

THE WARRIORS
All skill levels and all ages are welcome. Seriously anyone at all who respects BW enough and has the willingness to participate is fit to be called a warrior. You are not required to participate in the tournament, but are strongly encouraged to do so. I also plan to post something on the walls of the LAN center so that some random Koreans might also join us (talked to the owner about this already).

MAP POOL
Maps will be played in this order of priority:

1. Circuit Breaker
2. Destination
3. New Sniper Ridge
4. New Heartbreak Ridge
5. Fighting Spirit

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
  • $5 entry fee
  • Double Elimination
  • Prize Pool = sponsorship money + entry fees
          ~Split 60%/30%/10% between 1st/2nd/3rd place winners
  • Every match will be Bo3 except for the finals which will be Bo5
  • For each match (excluding the finals), every player will veto one map from the map pool (player who will veto first is determined by coin toss)

Everyone is welcome to bring their own equipment (mouse, keyboard, headset, whatever).

Due to time restraints and a possible lack of computers, participants are strongly discouraged from playing non-tournament games while they are still involved in the tournament.

SPONSORSHIP
Please! Help us make this LAN tournament amazing by donating money to the prize pool. A bigger prize pool will attract more players and greater talent, and will therefore mean a greater variety of high-quality games and casts. A donation of even $1 will be greatly appreciated, and will enter you into a lottery for the chance to win this:

A StarLeague hat signed by StarCraft and poker legends Guillaume "Grrr" Patry and Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier.

Winner selection process:
+ Show Spoiler +
To select the winning sponsor, I will write a program to generate a random number from 1 to the total number of sponsors for each sponsor such that no two sponsors have the same number. It will then select a winning sponsor by a randomly generated number from 1 to the total number of sponsors that matches a particular sponsor. It will therefore be a completely random method of selection.

"Hey guys, we're living in a simple world. If you want BW to be alive, to be young and hot, you should do something. Not just drink the beer while watching Sayle's stream. The time showed we got a great community. We can do everything we need and we want. What BW needs now? What YOU can do? BW needs a good server. iCCup looking for the admins — you can become one of them. Host news. Post the news to your favourite bw-sites. People who can make interesting news are always wanted. Do not want to post the news? Make the news! Got any ideas of great tourneys — share it, realize it. BW needs money. Just for events, you can do nothing but pay to the organizer — he will do everything needed. Just to say: HEY BITCHES WE LIVE AGAIN and to post our news to the biggest cybersport sites. May be it all sounds silly or shitlike, but… just dont complaint, guys, please. If you want something to be done, just do it. Or pay to someone who can do it." -reps)Largo from iCCup's Who is Who article

If you would like to become a sponsor:
+ Show Spoiler +
Please send donations via PayPal to spencereick@gmail.com
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SEND IT AS A "GIFT" SO THAT NO FEES ARE IMPOSED
PM me your PayPal e-mail and the amount you sent and I will post it below

CURRENT SPONSORS ($115 total so far):
+ Show Spoiler +
NeVeR - $50
ArvickHero - $25
jpak - $10
[anonymous] - $15
TehRei - $15

Even though I am a sponsor for this event, I will of course not be included in the winning sponsor selection process. Additionally, even if I so happen to finish 3rd or better in the tournament (unlikely to happen this time if we get just a couple more top-tier players to come), I pledge now to donate all of my winnings to the happiness of all after the LAN via soju and beer. So you can rest assured that I am not trying to swindle anyone; I'm doing this simply for the love of the game (and arguably alcohol).

REQUESTS
  • People interested in casting who think they can do a good job.
  • Someone willing to get there early with me to ensure that all of the maps are downloaded on each comp, casting software is installed on select computer(s), etc.
  • Anyone willing to help with the organization of the bracket on the day of the tournament, telling people who they have to play, answering questions, etc.
  • Someone interested in taking photos and posting them on TL after the event.

Please PM me if interested.
Also, please post here if you are sure that you can go.

Yes, we would need the casters to be present at the event. Don't want the players to have to deal with lag and installing chaos/iccup launcher on every computer, etc.

But if I go, and I probably will, I'll try to get a replay pack together so people can look at it later.

Only lost 2 replays last time. Good for first time, I think.

NeVeR, any possibility of reserving PCs for the event? NetZone is pretty small and I wouldn't want to end up with us crowded out or next to some dude searching for porn.

@jpak: Thanks, that will be appreciated.

@Kibibit: Whenever I've been there, there has hardly been any people. But I already spoke to the manager about this tourney and I plan to speak to him again once I get some idea of how many people are likely to attend, so I'll be sure to ask about making sure enough PCs are reserved.

I typed up a flyer in korean with great help from the naver dictionary so that some random fobs in k-town might show up. Someone fluent in reading/writing korean please download the word doc below to look at it and if necessary correct anything that sounds awkward/wrong so I can confidently post it on the walls of the PC room. You can PM me any modifications, thanks.

How can I donate a dollar to the event if I do not have Paypal?

I still don't trust NetZone, plus their prices are very expensive.
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

Just sign up, lol. All you need is a credit/debit card to make paypal payments. And why don't you trust NetZone? It's really not THAT much more expensive than CyberCraft. Plus I don't like the new CyberCraft. Those comps won't let you download and install software or even play BW online. Not to mention playing on LAN there felt kind of weird to me, almost as if there was some sort of lag.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I don't even know if CyberCraft allows people to use their own equipment (probably not), but seeing how the comps were set up last time I figure it would be huge pain connecting your mouse/keyboard anyway. At NetZone it is easy and they do not care.

to anyone who wants to come but also wants to dodge:
let me tell u something. from what i experienced from the starleague 1, the feeling is absolutely different between lan and playing at home, yes, it is more INTERESTING AND EXCITING. you can not only see ppl's first person control, but also have fun discussion during game break. ppl will also watch ur REAL LIFE BATTLE. moreover, u get FRIENDS!
so i encourage those who are hesitate to come, just come and FUCK AROUND!

I really think there will be enough comps to accommodate every match that needs to be played. If we get an unexpectedly large turn-out it would just mean that people waiting for their next match would not be able to use a computer.

As a point of discussion, would the people who like organizing these events like to put together a collective NYC BW account and attach a stream to it? I've just been given carte blanche to use my folks laptop (that has been largely taken over by other family members as of late). It's an i7 laptop that should be capable of streaming BW, SC2 and possibly even Dota if it comes to it. Only one of these games is relevant to the discussion, but there it is. I'll be practicing streaming on the side as well.

Whatever you think about NetZone, at least it's very comfortably warm and not freezing cold like some other place. Also as mentioned earlier, the computers actually let you download and install software which makes everything a lot easier.

T-9 days till this event!

Since SNM decided to go cast PL in Korea, I was wondering if we should set up some sort of stream anyways, if possible.

hopefully everyone had a wonderful holiday.

Fees are imposed on the Gift section of PayPal 2 out of 3 times, so the luck of not paying any fees is based on activity. However, any section under Personal has the least fees. For instance, Gift and Payment Owed are the same. Just thought I'd point that out after reading the OP.

Edit: Source: Over a two day span I was on the phone with PayPal for several hours deciphering the tax liabilities of organizing.

Edit2: I wish I lived in NY so I could go to this.

If I could, I'd pay the fee, show up, and get my ass handed to me in the first game. Kinda hard considering I live in Norway though.

Is there going to be a stream?

Yes, there will be a stream. I submitted a Calender Event request, so hopefully it will get approved soon.

Well, it seems SuperNovaManiac can no longer cast, so I'm going to have to volunteer myself for that. If anyone else is interested in casting, please let me know.

Prize pool update: Thanks to an anonymous donor, the sponsorship prize pool (not including entry fees) has increased to $90.

@Game: I've never experienced paypal fees when the transaction goes through as a "gift", but I guess it could just be because I don't use paypal that often.

Edit: Also, anyone with a camera who's willing to take a pics throughout the day?

I don't know why this thread isn't pinned. All of these hyped kids for the new team liquid tournament that have had their bw fire reignited. If you're anywhere close to the NY area, we know you're playing BW or are planning on starting again. I haven't seen one gosu listed that should be scaring anyone away from playing this. Everyone should be feeling like they have a decent shot. Even if it turns out not to be the case, worst case scenario is you supported BW and you came away with a positive experience. Playing at a lan with fellow ballers is always > than playing at home and sulking about it. Show up at the tournament or end up depressed. Easy choice.

Reside in the city but don't think I will be going to this either. I'll galdly add to the pool once my money goes through paypal.

PROTIP: Hungry during the tournament? For $6, you can get the world's best lamb over rice with some of the best sauce mixture ever created for mankind. All the other carts are generic, but this one brings something new to the table...it's absolutely the best halal ever. 53rd and 6th ain't got shit!

The cart is located pretty much in front of the PC bang, it is easy to locate.
This is the picture of the cart (exactly this logo)

Tentative dodge incoming. Family issues might keep me at bay this weekend.

Plus, I have the skills of D--------. Who needs hotkeys, when you can drag select right-click?
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

I feel you bro. but it is not a 1 on 1 lunch, it's a close friend's birthday party lol

That's why you don't befriend noobs. There's some things in life you will regret for the rest of your life if you miss out on. I think this LAN easily qualifies as such an event. If I were planning a party at chuck e cheese, like your friend prob is, and some baller like NeVeR was like "I'm having a LAN on that day," well... guess what... I would still go to chuck e cheeses, but I would get it to go so I could take it to the LAN.

Say you had 365 close friends and they all had birthdays on different days, and they all happened to be noobs like the aforementioned one, then I guess you could never go to a LAN? It's clear to me you're treading a dangerous path. Hopefully you can change your ways before you miss out on every epic event in the history of mankind.

Hey all,

Unfortunately, I've been infected with a terrible cold and am in no condition to go outside today nor make the commute to NYC.

As a result, no-go from me.

Please take a lot of pictures for me and provide stream/replays if necessary...

PS: As I attend pretty much all BW events in the NYC area, I am not dodging if given the chance...just that I feel absolutely shitty. And I feel bad....sorry all <3

Will definitely attend the next one, as usual...would that one be a proleague type or standard tournament format? Keep me in the loop!

Hahahaha somebody should tell him about the Legacy Starleague if anybody has his contact.

Well theoretically if he found this LAN he should still be on TL, but he isn't posting. Unless you got this to him not via TL, but yeah somebody that good would be a great addition to the competition in TLS soo... if anyone has his contact go ahead and try to ring him up

Anyone got any pictures?

As an aside, I hope to see more LAN-style tournaments in the future I'm sure I'm not the only one willing to donate some cash to events like this one (even if there aren't any more Hats to be had).

We are planning to have one every month or two! I hosted one in November, there will be a ProLeague-style event coming up soon, and then probably more.

That's on hold for the moment, my life's been an absolute mess as of late, and It definitely won't end before the time I was planning the PL for. Sorry for my absence and the PL event being put on hold.

Would you terribly mind if Gun and I host it?

Nope, go for it. I honestly wish I could, but I'd rather the event happen more than anything else.
