if I was the only one that didn't spot the trolling, then I would have been the only one being trolled. If I said "us" then the untrolled as well as the trolled would have been included.
but it's all moot since this is indeed the real list.

lol at the list of players
you can tell who picked the players
this has got be one of the strangest lineups known to mankind, but it should be pretty flashy! (in the other sense of the word, lol)
Personally, I'm cheering for Canada's own Chill for an upset as well as Rek and Midian.

whoa, they had a qualifier and everything, that's awesome
the Japanese players weren't added because we didn't know about them until now.
nevermind, the Japanese E-sports Organization just picked players based on their achievements

In all my time spent trolling Brood War community sites I have never seen or heard of a bw player from Japan, other than our one and only Mani.
In related news, Chill has this tournament. Second place might be Bisu or Effort but it's gonna be hard for them.

I don't really understand this - is ief some sort of foreign humiliation ceremony?
|
yeah. it's kinda designed for korea to win it...
I mean... Bisu Stork Effort Boxer
yah, it would take cosmic upsets for korea not to take all gold, silver, bronze medals
|
I think it would've been better if it were Savior instead of Effort. We'd likely get another classic showdown between he and Bisu, and things wouldn't be so one-sided for the Koreans (well, sort of).
Good luck to the foreigners. Y'all chaps are gonna need it.

group b is sooo unfair.. not only does it have jaystar and pj, no thats not enough, we have to add effort too. no no no, still not sexy. lets see, how about bisu? i mean, wth?? poor non-korean/chinese guys in that group. now lets compare that to group c. only 5 players. not a single korean or chinese player. unknown player redshirt and slog4 - who hasnt been playing for over 4 years, if i remember correct . what were they drinking/smoking when drawing the groups. still, should be fun non the less

You seem to think that foreigners are there to actually win...
How does "there to have fun, entertain some people, and play good starcraft" sound as a reason for this tournament?

Is ret going to play ZvZ because there are a lot of Zergs in his group...

Yeah he has commited to playing only zerg now, so he should be playing zvz, i guess its better anyway now because he didn't really train his tvz anymore. But he can get out of group A. I guess it depends on how he does aganist LBH because we have to assume that Terror wins the group.

Oh what? Sorry i didn't really follow IEF until now. So how are they going to do it with 5 groups? Make another group with the 5 finalists and the two best out of there play the final?
edit: Maybe someone heard from one of the gamers. Were the Koreans also in that room to draw the groups? If yes how did they react to having Effort and Bisu together in group B?

According to this: http://news.replays.net/page/20091030/1435984.html two of the five players will have to fight for the last spot of the semi finals.

Probably
If they think koreans owning white dudes will get enough viewers they will. I'm just saying they aren't doing it now because proleague is the better option.

I stipulate that these results show Chill being not only a cut above Strelok and Incontrol, but also progamer material.

Well if bisu wins the rest of his games..I guess hed force a 3 way tie, but if he doesnt I guess PJ would advance as he would have same record as effort, but he beat effort. I dunno the rules of this tourney but this could be the actual situation.

this is according to PJ's buddy wufan, i think wufan is quite famous on TL (for leaking reps?) anyways, he said that after PJ defeated effort, they both have 4-1 records. so the Koreans came to PJ, asking him to play a BO3 tiebreaker with effort, PJ refused. And the referee eventually agreed,so pj advances.
|
|
geez the foreigners are coming out in full force.
is this a sign? wcg could be VERY interesting.
|
Bisu is not 4-1? If not i think pj deserve to advance.

if only kespa refs were like that

Look's like Idra is going to advance out of his group. 4-0 at the moment. So at the moment it looks like Terror and Stork are instantly into the semi-finals, we'll have to see if IdrA drops a game and the final result of Group E to see who has to play in the sole quarter-final match.

So Bisu's out? Well, so much for his confidence before the tournament.
-Are you confident for the IEF? ▲Last time, I just went in without any previous thought, but it was still okay (laughs). Rather than arrogance, it's just that I have faith in my fundamentals, so even without any preparation, I'm sure that I can deal with it. This is because there is a gap in the skill level between me and the chinese players. If I lose like this, I guess it will be due to chance but my confidence level is about the same as the level of skill difference (laughs).
This is why I like Stork better. Talk soft and carry a big stick.

If G5 can beat White-Ra and doesn't get matched up with PJ or Stork in the next part he has a good chance at getting top 3. His PvP ain't so hot.

Any word on the result of G5-White-Ra and White-Ra-Nazomen? Because if White-Ra loses any of those games he's out and G5 advances.
|
looks like g5 is ddoing amazingly well :O I hope we get some english coverage :-)
|
g5 is4-0, whitera is 3-1. Winner advances and boxer does not!!!! Idra advances Stork advances pj advances terror[fou] advances
|
That BoxeR would drop a game vs White-Ra was expected if you ask me, but that he'll lose to G5 is a suprise. Also Bisu's cockyness... he deserves nothing better than being out in the Group stage. Huge suprise that EffOrt lost to a 2 gate, at least for me.
But all people that think the foreigners would take the WCG,.. Jaedong and Stork are not players that take foreigners lightly even if they know they are way better. And I guess Bisu will be more careful in what he says and how he playes at WCG.

Confirmed? No more games left? Pretty shitty for White-Ra then, because he still had games vs G5 and that Japanese guy. Would have made him advance if he won both instead of G5. ... or are they playing it right now?
|
I do believe there are more games left.
|
Example:
White-ra > G5 White-ra > Nazomen
both are 4-1 and using the tiebreaker system they did for pj-effort, white-ra would then advance and not g5.

Thats not true. If White-Ra wins vs G5 but loses to Nazomen, he's 3-2 and not 4-1. Or did he already win vs Nazomen?

They did not play (whitera nazomen). This is according to the IEF website I am refreshing. They may be slow to update though.
there are two games left that have not been played.
White-ra vs Nazomen and White-ra vs G5.
G5 is 4-0 and White-ra is 2-1
|
wow jaystar beat both bisu and effort
I'd say he should advance instead of pj x)
|
Jaystar lost to effort. It was an error on the site. PJ and Effort both went 4-1 tying for first.
PJ beat effort in his group game so they let him advance.

Yes, and White-rA has to win both to be 4-1. With being 4-1, equal to G5 but hold a win against him, White-rA will advance.
|
Those two Japanese players did reasonably well.
|
Gretorp said White-ra is 3-1 so he must have already beat nazomen and the last game; G5 vs White-ra is winner advance now

The format is really weird. 1) Only one player advances from a group. 2) There are 5 groups. Winners of first two groups have to play each other to reach semi-finals. Winners from three other groups advances to semi-finals directly without additional matches. This is terrible and unfair.

well it was GOING to be randomly drawn single elimination so they were basically making the format up on the spot when they decided to change it.

I hate it when in SC they don´t have the competition rules and formats done beforehand. Is this the way they plan these:

This is why most well-ran tournaments in all sports work with good formats and seeds for the top-teams.

Why didn't they just make it 2 advance from each group, another group stage with 5 in each group. Again 2 advance each -> Semifinal?
Oh well, I guess this is better than single elimination brackets.

I mean they have 25 people invited and come up with a horrendous structure, whereas 24 gives you a perfect amount to come up with a whole bunch of good formats. Rekrul ruined it.

Oh well, I guess this is better than single elimination brackets.
too many games will be played and that puts off organisers, but i guess this format will spice up the 2nd day of tournament. I think they are thinking whatever format is put up korean will win it.
|
Yeah, it's quite strange that they didn't make more of having all these great players gathered. Playoff's literally only five matches. Also, according to the page where I found the results, several matches from group play weren't finished. If that the case, I'm guessing it's beceause the groups had already been decided, but it's still really a shame.

the best thing to do with 25 would've been to put all 2nd place finishers in another group and eliminate the bottom two, leaving them with 8 to the quarter finals
|
Typical bisu fail.
Before: I'm too good for those Chinese players. I'll simply out-mechanics their noob asses.
After: Oh well, I didn't need the $10,000 anyway...

This is why most well-ran tournaments in all sports work with good formats and seeds for the top-teams.
wouldn't it be better to put everyone on equal footing to determine the best player? it seems to me like it is eliminating external factors that might skew the results

he had a HUGE advantage then just decided to go all-in lings against all-in zealots instead of making a sunken and taking 3 bases safely against 1 base toss.

He had no advantage, indeed, he has been in problem. Look at 6 drones vs 13 probes, 12 lings vs 4 + 2 Zealots? Who will be the winner? Clearly, I thinks PJ deserves it.

so any info as to how the rest of the matches in the group stage went... I like how IEF sorta just stopped updating the grid after the winner was known.

im looking at these results.. and this is what i see..
#1 there are actually starcraft players from japan??? and they actually did pretty good.. beating machine and such..
#2 pj advanced from a group of death over two progamers.. not just progamers.. top 10 kespa..
#3 G5 and White-ra both did amazing taking down the legend Boxer.. like we all knew he would (sorry boxer but g5 way to good pvt) <3 sadly g5's 1 loss was too white-ra so even tho 4-1 4-1 tie.. white-ra went on TT (wcg has this retarded rule aswell) but anyways i love white-ra aswell !
#4 im so happy to see non koreans doing so well vs. the koreans somthing i wasnt expecting.. maybe the chinese have caught up in skill??? i guess time will tell in future events ^_^
#5 korea has to be pissed that they didnt dominate.. sending 5 pro's and not just avg B teamers.. alot of the top players!
my two cents on the event!
Have a great time in korea guys!!

I think it's been acknowledged that none of the Korean players took this tournament entirely seriously (at the very least, Bisu said it explicitly, and it was somewhat expected for Stork and Effort). It does still mean that foreign Starcraft is closer to Korean Starcraft than it's ever been before, seeing as a players like Bisu and Effort can't expect to trounce foreigners off "basics" alone.
Waiting to see how WCG turns out, with less screwed up groups and format.

BO1 is hardly any real measure, its random as hell. Do a cheese and you have a fair chance of winning in BO1 while in BO3 its much harder since you have to win 2.

well, terror and stork accomplished their mission. boxer is a b-teamer that really sucks ass vs protoss, so it is not the biggest suprise that he lost to some of the top toss foreigners. and effort basically got eliminated because of that one single game. droping a single game can always happen, and pj is a top3 foreigner and no scrub.
bisu also lost one game to a foreigner, ok, that can happen. and he lost to effort on the protoss graveyard of the month, hbr.
ofc it is kind of embarrassing for them to lose to non-pros. but keep in mind the combination of not taking it serious, the volatility of bo1´s and that pj is at least something like a semi-pro himself.

Well, the three top placers are all related to the korean pro scene, so it is not THAT bad. Now imagine if the three top were Chill, Strelok and that japanese guy? then that would be a true disaster.
Offcourse, Boxer, Bisu and Effort dropping out is a huge upset but it is not like they prepared specially for this event.

Offcourse, Boxer, Bisu and Effort dropping out is a huge upset but it is not like they prepared specially for this event. Except they're pros who get paid to play... and after Bisu's comments about it being a blunder if he lost to foreigners Im glad he got knocked out. Shame about effort and bisu.
I'm glad he lost.... But it's really too bad he lost t.t

So Boxer's TvP is really THAT bad...

^^^^ Or perhaps White-Ra is pretty darn good....

Haha this is actually the worst thing that could have happened for foreigners at WCG
Bisu/JD/Stork know they're going to get roasted if they lose to any foreigner (especially after this debacle) ... I expect 1-2-3 by them unless they knock each other out.

Effort and Bisu did suck at the IEF. The replays show that they obviously didn't prepare for this because they thought they could 1a2a3a to victory.
As for Boxer, what Nony said is the hard truth; he's simply not a good player these days and whatever fanboys can say about his genius will not change that fact. For people who don't know you can dislike a player's playstyle yet still like his actions outside of the game. That's why I have never understood the "give respect" response people give when you criticize Boxer's play.

It doesn't matter. Effort and Bisu played pretty badly.

This tourney stacked it up pretty good against me haha. Bisu, effort and now Sen. ARRRG!
Having a blast though I told Bisu to get his jacket off my chair and he thought that was quite funny.. glad he took it the right way.

I feel like for all the hype that this tournament received, it was VERY poorly run
12 games from group stages weren't played. Koreans didn't seem to take it seriously. They did RPS of all fucking things for seedings in the brackets.. I hate to complain about a tournament that had such a great lineup, but because of that, and because of the hype it recieved.. (saw it at one point mentioned as "The best LAN for SC ever") I was expecting a really good tournament - I mean, all sorts of awesome players here - and then it's just... not as great as I had hoped.

BoxeR does pretty well for the first 3 matches, going 3-0. Then loses 2, becoming 3-2. The matches he lost are against Protoss.
I'll continue to put faith in BoxeR. BoxeR Fighting!
DinoToss Fighting too!
By the way, Bisu fails more than BoxeR in IEF. Although I'm an SKT1 fan, It just makes me to see Bisu fail. (Due to the Bisu interview)
It's sad they didn't send Fantasy for IEF. Then there would be a chance that it would be Fantasy vs Stork @ the finals.

I really can't wait for the VODs, the Korean commentators went nuts over the White-Ra Boxer game.
|
we're gonna feel the wrath at WCG
|
So Korean professional players losing to foreigners in an event tournament is a disaster now? Not to take any credits away from White-ra or those who won against the Koreans, but it's kinda reasonably understanable that Bisu or Effort didn't practice or take these games seriously. They went in with basics, and foreigners happened to have caught up with that basic level of skill. If anything, I would feel happy for the non-Korean SC community, not hatred towards the pros. I don't quite understand why the Korean community is making a big fuss about this.
So Idra made 3rd, Effort was CJ's ace but disqualified. Conclusion, Idra deserves a regular post in CJ's lineup.
|
um so foreigners (chinese) can beat pros in bo-1's sometimes? big deal?

On November 01 2009 20:15 hifriend wrote: um so foreigners (chinese) can beat pros in bo-1's sometimes? big deal?
I don't think anybody is arguing this is the biggest, most earth-shattering event in SC history. But upsets are always amusing. And with WCG around the corner there might be more.
No more. No less.
|
On November 01 2009 20:15 hifriend wrote: um so foreigners (chinese) can beat pros in bo-1's sometimes? big deal?
Given how the landscape looks currently, the foreigners shouldn't be able to beat the progamers at all if they play seriously. There simply should be too much of a difference for that to be possible. And if the programers play less seriously, like they would at a tournament like IEF, the best foreigners should be able to beat them maybe one in twenty games.
The assumption above is kind of shaken by Koreans losing one fourth of all their games at this event. I think many peole enjoy the fact that the Koreans are good, and unimpressive foreigners beating them just seems wrong. It certainly makes the Korean scene seem less glamourous. The Chinese, to my knowledge, aren't better than the top10 foreigners, so that shouldn't be what's making the difference.
So, yes, it is quite a big deal. Exciting and terrifying at the same time. I was really hoping that Boxer, like Savior, could use this tournament as a change to showcases his raw skills, just like Savior has done well in foreign tournaments. It should seem obvious that even if Boxer's skill is below average programers at the moment, it should still be miles away from the foreigners, allowing him to have the surplus to show us a bit of his magic and create some fun games.
In the end, it would be good to have foreigners on the same level as the Koreans as it would create a better international scene and, of course, make for more great games. It's just that at the moment the foreigners aren't good, so that hasn't really changed.
The great part is that the Koreans will take WCG more seriously. However, most likely, then it will only be a repeat of last year. Still, I enjoyed some of the one-sided game, liking how it exposed an entirely different way of relating to the mechanics of the game between foreigners and the best Koreans.
|
|
This has probably been discussed earlier in this thread, but i cant seem to find it (have been looking for hours and hours...) - in the results it says that ret went 1-1 , how can that be so? Dont we have all the results from all the games, or did he not show up to some of the games? W/O?

He looked so happy after he won vs Boxer I have bene smilign for ages now, very well done.

No, the foreigners never caught up with basic skills. Bisu and effort play at 50% like an Iccup or bnet game, its possible to beat them like this, everybody starts with 4 workers like football 11 players. Its not a big deal. Effort was amused and wanted to raise his game thats why ask for bo3.

justiceknight, every result has been nicely included in the first post. The ranking would be:
1. Stork ($10,000) 2. Terror $5,000) 3. IdrA ($3,000) 4. White-Ra 5. Pj
Would be nice to know the results of the foreigner tournament, though

strelok vs rushgoon in final, dunno what happened... I'm trying to piece together the brackets and this is what I have:
Quarters: Artosis > Sen Rushgoon > Gretorp ??? < Strelok Jaystar > ???
Semis: Artosis < Strelok Rushgoon > Jaystar
Final: Strelok vs Rushgoon
And not sure about RO16.
|
wow, PJ was sooo short changed! he got through the group with Bisu and effort in it, just to find himself against Terror, and not even for the semi-final! not even a chance of third place. and Idra beat a group with no koreans in it and straight into the semifinals playing foreigners. How unfair

But then again beating Boxer might make up for that.

Effort/Bisu/Boxer were not even 2nd in their groups, they were eliminated no matter what the situation was. + what motbob wrote, and since this is a kor tourney, say bye to replays

A) We arn't going to see many of the games. B) Even if it is one person coming out, 2 more koreans should of came out, but they didn't. C) Originally, they were going to have elimination where if they lose then they are out of the tournament. If bisu, effort, boxer somehow lost in their first game, well then you have NO great games.
And for those people who said big deal if they drop one game because they arn't trying, but it used to be that the koreans can beat the foreigners without trying at all. Now they are losing
|
I don't understand why people make excuses for the pros like "they were not trying" or that they "didn't prepare". What the fuck would they have to prepare? They play starcraft 10+ hours a day. There is no way they prepared any less then the foreigners. And if they are not taking a tournament seriously for 10,000 and missing out on helping their team in proleague I don't know why they would even waste there time going. I am sure they were trying.
|
pj got short changed, he should have played for 1 more round in the finals.

YAY STORK
At least that overcasts their loss against estro that day.

So even after effort AND bisu failing out in groups the top three is still Khan, (ex) STX and CJ -.- I doubt there will ever be a better chance than this ~~ And Idra has been in korea for too long lol "Thanks for cheering on me, I will do my best to win in the future" Should have thanked some random practice partners for true hillarity.

100% agreed
Koreans do not often have the opportunity to win a lot of money this easy. They only have to win a few games and that's it. Why not play serious these few games and win a good amount of money ? And really, the maps were not some random old maps but proleague maps, so come on ..

I don't get why people said Bisu was cocky or arrogant. He said he played more bw than non professionals so had better fundamentals. He said his chance of winning was roughly in line with the difference in fundamentals. All of that is true. He didn't dismiss the skills of foreigners or brag about himself. He lost a few games against weaker players and I really don't see how anyone is surprised by this happening with Bisu every now and then.

Yeah I agree. Bisu didn't really do much except state the truth. It was indeed a huge disappointment that he lost to foreigners. Why some people like to crucify players for being honest and confident, I have no idea. I guess these are the same people who love false modesty and repeated self-deprecation in those god-awful boring interviews. I mean, seriosuly, grow a pair. The only reason these people interview like such wusses is because they don't want to raise expectations and put pressure on themselves.

Also, Machine iNc and Gretorp were hilarious during IdrA's interview.

This was a very easy event to make a lot of money. Even Idra won $3000! Whether or not it's a starleague final is irrelevant, winning easy matches for lots of money should be a no brainer.
This is just pure fail
-Are you confident for the IEF? ▲Last time, I just went in without any previous thought, but it was still okay (laughs). Rather than arrogance, it's just that I have faith in my fundamentals, so even without any preparation, I'm sure that I can deal with it. This is because there is a gap in the skill level between me and the chinese players. If I lose like this, I guess it will be due to chance but my confidence level is about the same as the level of skill difference (laughs).

He's just being truthfull, and based on the past it wasnt a bad prediction, just the fact that these losses are such big upsets kinda shows that. It's good to see that the gap is somewhat closing tho, it always felt weird seeing people that were considered the shit here being absolutely chancelessly raped by any semi-pro Korean in the past.

Well getting beatings from Chinese isn't really getting beatings from 'foreigners'. Pj, Lx and F91 were actually in a teams that go through StarCraft training. The Korean pros bitch about everything every single time they go to China.
|
This will have a Redeem Team effect on the korean expedition going to WCG.
Also, Korean pros need to acknowledge that this is not like the old days, when they could wake up with a hangover and still go unbeaten in a tournament with foreigners. With the current skill gap, it should be okay if they don't practice like for OSL, but at least they should play with the correct mindset, with tension and will, not like they are sparring with some b-teamer.
There is no excuse for either Bisu or EffOrt going 2-2, and they should be ashamed of their performance. They didn't deserve to go thru because they didn't play better than the ones that went thru to the POs.
However, I highly doubt any foreigner could take a pro in a Bo3, because the skill gap is still there, and even though in one game they can play worse than a foreigner, it's unlikely for the outcome to be repeated.
After all, Barcelona lost to Ruby Kazan, and AC Milan lost to FC Zürich. For that game, they lost, it doesn´t mean they are on par. I mean, Real Madrid lost 4-0 to Alcorcón(a team playing 3 leagues below them), and actually they got owned bad, not just in the score, but in the overall gameplay. Alcorcón deserves every bit of praise and merit, but no one really does think they have reached Real Madrid´s skill, do they?

lol yeah I guess in the best of worlds
alot of korean terrans are especially fragile at TvP compared to their other matchups and this is why we often see an upset in this matchup. Boxer and silent_control comes to mind, although they have very similar styles.
You don't often see a foreign zerg take down a korean terran but a foreign protoss taking down a korean terran is not as unlikely by far.
The most impressive thing in this tournament imo was Pj (I think?) take down Effort PvZ.

not really considering he beat Savior at WCG ... his PvZ is good, lol.

i think its impressive considering before he went to korea he was a tvz player (i think?) and his pvz was horrible for a while. But now its amazing.

Did Terror ever play Idra?
So I am looking at the result.
Terror > White-ra Idra > White- ra Stork > Idra Stork > Terror
But why did Terror get 2nd automatically? He never play Idra so they can't just assume Terror get 2nd. What if Idra play Terror and own him? This tournament is flawed.

Terror > White-Ra Stork > Idra
Finals
Stork > Terror
Battle for 3rd Place
Idra > White-Ra

Extra quarter final match decider was the best part. I think it's safe to say Idra > Bisu, Effort, and BoxeR.
|
I'm glad that Stork won. Btw, will we get reps?
|
How could both Bisu and Effort lose to multiple foreigners? These aren't B team pros they are some of the most elite current progamers.
I mean, could they really lose on purpose or not try their best despite there being such a significant prize?
And G5 > Boxer... that's weird to see, but congrats to G5, that must feel cool/weird to beat the emperor.
|
Oh, man if i beat Bisu / Effort/ Boxer or any progamer, id be so happy, even if i didnt win the tournament overall. Great games!

1000000 won aint bad for a fun tournament.

Didn't Bisu say he didn't need to practice for this or something like that?

Well...he did win the last one and the one before that... According to his interview, he didn't practice for his last IEF either and won anyway.
Rather than him being too arrogant, he was simply stating the facts according to his personal experience. I think that he lost due to the overall skill level of foreigners increased this year.
And yeah, $10,000 isn't bad at all for a tournament of this size. It is some serious money. No player should think of it as too insignificant and unworthy of their practice time.
OH, and Stork's interview is out. He is as self-degrading as usual. No wonder that he won. He never underestimated the skills of his opponents.

Holy shit, jaystar and Pj owned.
