No, not the Greek god of wine.
This one. + Show Spoiler +
Yes, this Starleague will be sponsored by an energy drink.
So while you all sit there and make your CJ faces, like I did for a good 10 minutes, let me go over the basic information you all already know.
OSL Group Selection: Jan 11th, 2008 (6:30PM) Terran(4)= FrOzean, Flash, XellOs, Sea Zerg(6)= Jaedong, July, Rumble, Luxury, YellOw[ArnC], sAviOr Protoss(6)= Stork, Bisu, Much, BackHo, BeSt, Rock
Maps: There's some good news in this area. Due to MASSIVE balance issues, Persona is thrown out the window, along with fantasy II which also brought some positional balance issues (like that's a big surprise). Currently the only announced maps are Blue Storm and Katrina. The 2 other maps will be brand new maps from OGN. Let's pray we don't see permanent psionic storms or something.
Points to watch for: - Only 4 terrans, least amount of terrans to ever qualify. - 3 protoss seeds, most for the resurrected race in history. - XellOs's comeback to the main stage - July's goldenmouse attempt - Savior's slump, ending? - Stork, the YellOw of Protoss? - Luxury and YellOw[ArnC], the first ever star-leaguer, dual-leaguer twins/brothers.
For a better understanding of why this sponsor is such a joke, here's HonestTea's description of the drink's "reputation" in the Korean community.

Baccus is Red Bull on crack. That little bottle is like 45% caffeine, 45% taurine and 10% sugar. It's what college kids drink before all-nighters, and what over-worked salary men drink before another night of staying at the office until dawn.
Baccus is a mystical potion that grants extraordinary abilites at the cost of wierd side effects.
Basically, it turns you into a beserker for 60 minutes, afterwards you become a zombie for 120 minutes.
So no, it's not exactly a positive association.

I'm glad they seem to have found a sponsor without so much trouble this time around. Is an energy drink really an inappropriate sponsorship candidate for the OSL? It seems fine to me.

I want to see a map with permanent plaguuuus, and one with permanent nukular explosions.

Fantastic line-up for the osl. Go Savior and Twins! Go zergs in general.
btw, how does bacchus taste?

woah cool i was just drinkin one of those yesterday and wow so awesome how little terrans there are. ya yuck

oh god finally new maps, I can't wait! Looking at the players this could very well become a very nice OSL.
YarnC v Lux final please.

Care to explain their mirth?
I don't like this oSL lineup.
FrOzean - who the fuck cares GTFO Flash - KTF's prodigal child Sea - l'enfant terrible, I don't want him to win the whole thing, but I expect interesting games from him. XellOs - if Seo Jihoon refrains from DDR, he wins OGN. Please, no DDR.
Jaedong - I love you but you don't deserve two OSLs so quickly July - Fatzerg for golden mouse? MAYBE Rumble - LOL. w/e who cares. Yarnc - GTFO fucking poseur Luxury - royal road? nah. So... welll... yeah. Just make interesting games and lose in the... quarters. maybe semis. sAviOr - You'd make a good finalist. I don't want you to win though.
Stork - lawl plz die Bisu - no OSL for you. I want to see Bisu/sAviOr, nevertheless. Much - to semis. You aren't interesting/charismatic enough to be a finalist; I don't want DAUM again. Backho - you look like one of my friends but uh. no. GTFO as well. BeSt - new hope of T1~ You are ugly though. so GTFO. Rock - The FUTURE of PROTOSS is here! TheRock for Bacchus OSL 2008!

!! for real?
Damn I knew Baccus was bad, but not that bad

United States33364 Posts
read up the ingredients
Like 30mg of caffeine per 100ml bottle. I guess it's a standard energy drink ratio of caffeine per volume, but most energy drinks are 250ml + per can.
oh, like 2000mg of taurine per 100ml bottle as well, that's like 5x as much as any american energy drink. Taurine doesn't seem to have any toxicity in high quantities though, so I guess it's fine.

Since I'm bored, here's my take:
Contenders: Jaedong - self explanatory. Sea - the best terran in this OSL, but a tad shaky in individual leagues. I think he needs a favourable run and map draw if he's to do any damage with so many good vs T players. Savior - Dual League performance was quite impressive. Hasn't been in great shape since cracking his first OSL last year, but is showing renewed confidence. Stork - has come close twice now and will be hungry to go one further. Some great ZvPers in Savior, July and Jaedong could see him struggle though. Bisu - He'll be loving the amount of zergs. Still somewhat shaky in vs P and vs T matchups. He'll really want this one to show people he isn't a once trick pony. Much - He's on fire atm. Not a very inspiring player, but gets the job done.
Maybe.... Just maybe: Xellos - proven player in the past, showing recent signs of a return to past glory. Has he got what it takes to put the D back in DDR? I think not, but could be wrong. Flash - I really don't like him, but if Silent_Control can go deep in an OSL, I guess Flash can too (and has I guess). Too many T killers for me to give flash much of a chance. Yarnc - His vs T is always a pleasure to watch, but he struggles vs P. If he can get his act together vs Protosses he could go deep. Lux - Same as his brother really. Something of an unknown quantity being his first OSL, but I think Yarnc has a better shot. July - he's been there and done it before, but is very inconsistant these days. He'll like the lack of good TvZ players and the abundance of P. His hopes may rest of his ZvZ.
Cannon fodder: Frozean - his second OSL. DIdn't do much in his first and I don't expect him to do much here. Rumble - who? Can't believe he got out of Dual. Backho - ZZzzzZZz Best - Wtf is with all these generic P players nowdays? Rock - He's the protoss version of Mumyung. Somehow qualifies for OSLs only to reward us with spectacular displays of suckiness.

ok i was just wondering. THe bottle looks kinda low rent and ehh..
|
God, if Rock lucks out with all PvT, he might just make it somewhat far.
|
Well, with the recent news of Much and XellOs wanting to be moved down to B for more practice time (not sure if that actually happened though), looks like they're pulling some hardcore bunnies of their hats.
If only another CJ player had made it. I would really have loved to see an all CJ semifinals.
Anyways...6 toss:
Bisu: I hate Bisu. No, not because he's sAviOr's Achilles Heel, but more because he's made my ZvP life harder by making his stupid beesuit so popular. Damn him. I'd really like to see him crash and burn, and somehow, I see that happening with so many other Toss around + sAviOr's changing style of ZvP + Fatzerg wanting to eat some Golden Mice + Jaedong's (I hope to God it's true) refined ZvP. Ironically, I find myself wishing there was more Terran, just so Bisu's chances are less. As much as I hate him, the chances of him being stopped might not be until the Ro8 or Semis.
Rock: I...just don't like him. He bugs the living shit out of me. Rock is like...a Rock...in your shoe... You just want to get him out but you don't want to take off your shoe in the middle of the street. Yeah, fail simile. I hope he dies...immediately. Suffer a devastating loss in the first round and disintegrate and crumble to sand like he should.
Stork: By popular myth, he's supposed to be delivering babies. Instead, he's a dinosaur. If he gets this confused with regular stuff like that, he might as well do a Dark Archon rush and mind control an SCV or drone and try to fix his burning gateways. I don't want to see Stork go any further than Ro8.
Much: CJ's toss. He's been on fire lately. But I don't see him taking down any of the Zergs in PvZ (except the twins). Unless he does an awesome Casy dodge, he won't make it further than Ro8. It's not to say that his PvZ is BAD. Just that everyone else's ZvP seems better. Everyone else meaning Savior, July, and maybe Jaedong, cause they're the only ones that matter.
BackHo: No.
BeSt: No.
6 Zerg:
Jaedong: Returning OSL champion. But with so much Protoss, and all with different styles as well, I don't see Jaedong taking this OSL at all. Sorry, but ZvZ, ZvT, AND ZvP? I'm not quite sure, but has there ever been a player that is 65%+ in ALL THREE matchups? Sorry Jaedong, unless you truly are Godzerg reborn, your ZvP is just gonna kill you.
July: I gave up on Fatzerg, as much as I hate to say it. I don't see him winning anything, but his games are fun to watch. That's about it.
Rumble: Hahahaha...no.
Luxury: The statement below. Yarnc: The statement above. Lux & Yarnc: They're alright, but I don't see them as champion material.
sAviOr: IF...IF sAviOr has been practicing his ZvP for the rematch against Bisu, then he's in luck this OSL, because there's only 4 Terrans and he won't have to overexert himself too much. But sAviOr's ZvZ has never been fabulous. Sure, it's been good, but never FABULOUS. We could see the Maestro taken out by one of his own this time.
4 Terran:
FrOzean: If you do any better than last time, I'm gonna have to call you out for hacks.
Flash: Just don't cheese. Your cheeses are ugly. But your never gonna win the late game either. Either way, Flash is a big contender for creating some upsets.
Sea: Maybe... Sea has shown that he has the skills to compete with the top, but that seems to be all he's got. I'd hate to compare him to Stork, but after this OSL, I might just have to.
XellOs: I love you. Please win. Even if XellOs took down the Godzerg, Mini-Godzerg, Fatzerg, Twinzergs, and the nonamezerg, I wouldn't care. GGPlay kissing that OSL trophy was disgusting. XellOs kissing the trophy will be like an instant surge in trophy-shaped costume sales.

I really really really really really really hope XellOs at least finishes as a finalist and will be REALLY happy if he finally wins another OSL after a nearly 5-year hiatus since his last OSL win.

with so few T in the pool, it'll be hard to say the T will end up victorious...but i have to root for xellos. he was the fighting pride of the T back in the day when he won WCG...but if he can't pull it off, then i suppose i'll have to settle for savior, bisu, july or jaedong...

I laugh at stupid people who still think Flash is a cheeser who can't win straight/late.

I've never really understood the OSL structure, is it just gonna be Ro16 then gradually descending. When I saw the drink it looked like an apple juice but one of those really effed up ones that are off, plus it also reminds me of extreme japanese game shows, Mishta Shparckel!
I think we'll see a Sea, Stork, Luxury and maybe a Bisu or Savior semi-final, I see no dominance at all in the scene so we will get some new to OSL finals players, but I always thought that there were more players in the OSL or am I confusing myself with the MSL!?!?!

All things considered, there doesn't seem to be any sign of the Starleague slowing down in Korea. Actually, people have said that Koreans seem to be losing interest in StarCraft every year and it just keeps on getting bigger.

They're the same God... It's like how the Romans named Zeus, Jupiter while the Greeks called Zeus, Zeus.

Not really....
Bud Light, Micelobe (however you spell it) Light, Miller Light, etc.
Are all low-taste somewhat flavorless beers of the lowest quality but also lowest price. But they sponsor huge events like the NFL and stuff. The quality of the product has zero to do with the quality of the sponsor. If something is desirable who cares if it is mocked. People want what people want!

Why do people assume an energy drink company is a bad sponser? They are very likely to see a boost in sales from this investment and energy drink companies are highly profitable. Most likely OGN got a pretty solid deal.
|
I agree with Foreverwar. A known energy drink is a pretty good sponsor for an event.
Funny thing is that I didn't know Korea had Bacchus as well. Its pretty common here in the philippines
|
It's not so much the money. It's the association with the product that apparently many people see as a little dodgy. To take an extreme example, I don't think OGN would take a cigarette company as a sponsor no matter how much money they offered.

To take an extreme example, I don't think OGN would take a cigarette company as a sponsor no matter how much money they offered. Sure, but why not energy drinks? Energy Drinks sponsering a video game league makes perfect sense. Gamers drink a LOT of energy drinks.
Red Bull sponsers a lot of competitive events.
And to say that OGN shouldn't accept the sponser because the drink is bad for you is a little silly. I seriously doubt the drink contains nicotine because in the united states it would be illegal for them to do that. But maybe korea has different regulations. Either way, as someone mentioned before, shitty beer companies have been sponsering all types of sporting events for decades. And those are definitely not good for you. Niether is Red Bull.
Basically, I wouldn't consider this a sign at all that OSL is having trouble finding sponsers.

What are you guys talking about? Bacchus is very well-liked and popular in Korea. Who cares if it's a energy drink? I don't see why it matters at all. Like Foeverwar said, it's actually even better! Good sponsor.

Explain to me how those comments prove OGN is having difficulties finding sponsors. It doesn't say anything about declining interest in Starcraft either. Yeah, Bacchus Starleague sounds funny but people will get over it.

Yeah, Bacchus Starleague sounds funny but people will get over it no I mean explain why the Korean guys find it funny... I personally like Bacchus, though I don't drink it often, but I don't live in Korea so I don't really get what's so funny about it.

Hahaha well that wasn't my point I was gettin at with my initial post but..I don't know Bacchus is just kind of..humorous. It's really hard to explain. The fact that the Bacchus commercials are shit-awful doesn't probably help. The ending always goes something like "속을 시원하게 해주는 바카스!!" Lol. I am actually not sure, but I guess people find it funny when OGN goes from Ever, Shinhan Bank, Daum and etc to... Bacchus.
(what I was saying was being sponsored by Bacchus, which is after all a large company, doesn't say anything about the decreasing interest in Starcraft and such. But yeah, I will be the first one to admit Bacchus Starleague is pretty hilarious. Come on, it's BACCHUS!!!)

Maybe if we slip this to Savior before he plays FBH again *thoughts of glee* A wall jumping Savior, now that would make my day!
|
I like how people make caffine and taurine out to actually be some sort of crazy drug thatll make you do all sorts of weird things. Not the case
If we slip it to savior before the game it will probably have no effect because I'm sure every progamer is probably dosed up with caffine anyways So it might make him shake a little and have a stomach ache. Yes I know you're kidding but oh well.

I'm looking forward to this OSL. The line up looks good (sea or xellos ftw!), it's cool to see less terrans (more tvp & tvz) and bacchus schmacchus anyway. The important thing is they have a sponsor. I mean it can't be worse than the pringles man dancing around like the msl had it.
Altough it looks like medicine and their logo is kinda cheap it's the osl that matter in the end. I expect hyperfast cuts in the intro. Anything else would be disapointing

Wholeheartedly rooting for July and Bisu in this one. Seeing July grab the golden mouse would be amazing. I'm a huge fan of his offensive zerg play and if he can just stay focused throughout this OSL.. well. I'm cheering for you anyway, chubby-cheeked man. And Bisu, please don't roll over and die just yet - I really believe the SC scene still needs a revolutionist protoss. Just stay creative (mb even time to update/finetune your PvZ?) and oh-so-slick and you'll be just fine. Really.
I'd love it for SaviOr and XellOs to do really well too, if only for the presence of old-school. Especially SaviOr deserves a break. He looked amazing vs NaDa in the dual-tournament and the way he was steaming after "FBH III" he's either going to berserk his way into the finals, or fizzle out before RO8. Hoping for the prior.
As mentioned above - this could be a wonderful OSL (go Bacchus, go etc! ^^) if you're not crazy about TvT.

Don't count Bisu out just yet. His game vs Jaedong was on a map which heavily favors zerg and his game vs Yarnc was just a huge fuck up in control. I wouldn't be suprised at all to see him continue to dominate zergs. That is if his confidence is still intact.

An energy drink sounds like a perfect sponsor As long as it's not cigarettes/drugs, I don't see any problem here. Otherwise milk companies are the only option left for OGN I guess.
And it will be hilarious (but not so surprising) if Ongamenet get a diaper/baby lotion company as a sponsor in the near future. Those fan girls gotta get married someday you know
Johnson's Baby OSL.- I can already see it coming.

Are these our two new maps?
|
so a 4 player on jungle with large elevated mains and a small middle?
is that high jungle? Is it an island map?
|
Is the desert map an island map? They seem intresting, well intresting=imba nowadays

The right one looks like a standard macro map (for desert tileset omg).... nats seem to be very small, perhaps persona style (without the dswarm).. i think islands at 3/9 and land expos at 12/6, min only nats appear to be in the low ground nex tot the main (between the main and the tar) The left one looks like a 3player island map with a back expo with a low ground center with 3 'O's coming off it..

When is this OSL starting? And what`s with the new map? When they gonna show it?

Like 30mg of caffeine per 100ml bottle. I guess it's a standard energy drink ratio of caffeine per volume, but most energy drinks are 250ml + per can.
oh, like 2000mg of taurine per 100ml bottle as well, that's like 5x as much as any american energy drink. Taurine doesn't seem to have any toxicity in high quantities though, so I guess it's fine. So each Bacchus bottle is only 100ml and only has 30mg of caffeine? And people think this energy drink is extreme? 30mg of caffeine is less than what a coke or pepsi has, it's pussy shit. Wouldn't you rather just have some coffee than load up on 1/5 the caffeine of coffee and a shit load of taurine, which probably makes you a lot more hazy and shaky than actually awake. I mean if you really like the fact that it's only 100ml you might as well just cut the bullshit and take some caffeine pills instead.
Plus the bottle looks like a medicine bottle like some others have pointed out which makes it very very gross looking to me and not at all refreshing, which is supposed to be the appeal of energy drinks over coffee I would think.
That aside, energy drinks seems like a very obvious and fitting sponser to me considering their recent popularity and the fact that progamers practice 20 hours a day. An energy drink fits perfectly, too bad this one looks crappy, though I wouldn't know firsthand.
More importantly: this OSL looks promising although it's pretty much the same ratio of medicore no names and big names it's just that all the mediocre terrans have been split into zergs and protosses too. I'll be rooting for either Savior or Xellos to win. Flash winning would be cool too, and although Much is kind of lacking in the charisma department he's a great player and part of CJ so I'll be rooting for him too. Savior, Xellos, Much, Flash. Seeing Sea finally step it up like Jaedong did would be cool too.
[edit]Oh yeah I forgot July winning would be cool to see also. And Rock winning for the pure lulz would be funny I guess.
