A new season of AfreecaTV StarCraft League has been announced, starting with the online qualifier.
Online qualifiers will be held during February 3rd-4th, with 24 players advancing to the main event. Maps to be used during the qualifier are Neo Dark Origin, Apocalypse, and Retro.
The format of the main event is identical to ASL16, as is the total prize pool of ₩78,000,000 KRW and its distribution.

expecting all the zergs to get through without issue. expect some terrans to fail. I feel that we might see two qualifier upsets.

I think the corrected/latest version boasts a pretty balanced winrate.

What don't you like about the format? I quite like it. My only change would be perhaps bringing some Bo3's into the Ro24.

Best, JD, Action and Bisu gogo. You will never being in final at last 16 ASL seasons. Gogo

It confuses me how people still get hyped for Bisu. To me he looks totally out of ideas and like he belongs in RO16, and not further.

the ultimate god gamer having to quit this game because of a very stupid mistake, over a 20 year legacy of positive behaviour would just be a massive loss to the scene.
Let him stay away a year or two and then return.

do you know whether the keep the same game days as last season when it was always Monday, Tuesday (+ Wednesday for Ro24)?

He could definitely come back, he'd just have to deal with people yelling at him for a bit and apologizing like Bisu.

The thing is, cryptocurrency is pretty fundamentally a scheme people use to get rich quick - including the people who invest in it. If they then get mad because they didn't get rich, but instead made someone else rich... QQ for me and I'll drink some tears.

It confuses me how people still get hyped for Bisu. To me he looks totally out of ideas and like he belongs in RO16, and not further. In online play he is second to Snow and Mini. Sometimes on Par for short periods of time. If Bisu can bring his online peaks to offline he has a legitimate chance. I feel like he stopped capitalizing on good opportunities in offline.
On that same note. If SnOw can bring his online form he again is the favorite. But past events have shown he can rarely bring that form to ASL.
Snow is in fact so good in online that he has the current record for highest ELO rating since they started tracking in remastered Era. For the month of January he has 87W/23L vs top pros.

|
Bisu stopped caring a while ago. The last time he actually tried hard was the season he came back from the crypto scandal and got 3rd. Since then he and ironically, Soulkey, are the pros with the least games played. Regularly taking 1-2 month breaks. Even hinted a couple of times that he wouldn't play ASL. Don't think he will do anything this season (if he plays).
|
I legit think Snow could have won 3 ASLs by now with those skills. But sometimes skill is not enough.
|
Actually he wasn't this good a player when he reached the finals in season 5 and 8. Funny that since then, he's become much stronger but hasn't gone past Ro8.

Tournament is no fun either when the final boss isn't there to raise the standard of play.
I'm of the opinion that there are still plenty of people who want to watch him play, and a great way to repent is to dedicate himself to pleasing his remaining fanbase by playing BW instead of hiding forever. I imagine that's what JD would do, considering that's what he's doing right now.

Snow is a really dominant player. He can really turn around a steamrolling Terran push, the kind which I have seen Bisu do against Flash. It is very spectacular when Protoss can negate a Terran's map control. PS: I'm really hopeful that this season will be the old school pros' season. Action, Sharp, Snow - go, go, go! I'm cheering for your success!

Sharp's definitely the wildcard of the season. Every single Protoss I can think of as an ASL regular is there already. Unless you want to fight about how Horang2 and HiyA are actually major contenders that are conspicuously missing... i don't see a ton of medium-sized names I'd expect to see. Could someone inform me if I'm missing any medium-sized names?

Ahh! I missed Queen! Effort grinding too hard and injuring his wrist is tragic. He was my favorite last season before Mini proved to be Effort's worst conceptual matchup.

beast, ZeLoT, Speed, TaeNGu, TY - cool - New (old) Faces
|
I think the Protoss have a great chance of taking over this ASL. As for me, they have the strongest lineup - compared to the lineups of players other races.
(The Zerg have a rather weak composition, the last thing I looked at was their weak skill, the Earthlings have a little better representation, including in numbers).
Especially considering how strong Snow is playing right now and Rain could get into shape as the tournament progresses, Bisu is also benefiting from his vast experience. Well, Best with his excellent PvT.
Well, that would be fair. It's no joke - over the past 16 seasons, the Ayur representatives have only 3 victories. Zerg have 5 titles, Terrans have 8.
Good luck to everyone. The main thing is less boring mirror matches.

Still really sad Fantasy didn't try out. I think he'd even have a better run in the ASL than TY, considering how he beat all the legendary/active ASL players in the Saudi Cup and tearing up the ladder.
Zero has really fallen off a cliff after he got married and had a kid (understandably so). He's probably the 6th best Zerg now after Soulkey, Hero, Soma, Effort and Action, probably tied with JD.

Shuttle won Game 1 with a cannon rush plus zealots and like 3 probes on Dark Origin.
The other game Shuttle won was Game 3 on Retro, Queen got into a solid 4 base and was turtled up with sunken, lurker, hydra while denying shuttle's 3rd and I thought the game was over in Queens favor but shuttle somehow plowed through what I thought was an impenetrable natural to take the game.

Group stage:
Except for group A, upsets can happen in pretty much all the other groups.
First games to be played on Radeon aka the new Vermeer. Winners and losers to be played on either Blitz Y, Citadel or Troy (each player bans 1) Decider to be played on either Neo Dark Origin, Apocalypse or Retro (each player bans 1)

Group B: Ssak over best. action over taenggu. ssak over action. best over taenggu. action over best.
Group C: Hero over killer. Stork over Mind. Hero over stork. Mind over killer. Mind over stork.
Group D: Jyj over ty. jd over shuttle. jd over jyj. shuttle over ty. jyj over shuttle.
Group E: Royal over beast. rain over barracks. rain over royal. beast over barracks. royal over beast.
Group F: speed over snow. shine over mong. speed over shine. snow over mong. snow over shine.

Neo Dark Origin has produced really cool aggressive games though. Just the 5th base is SUPER difficult to secure. Retro has produced some really good big games too. But it has some real turtling zerg advantages going for it and a lot of overlord safe spots.

Flash didn't enter. SoulKey is seeded into RO16, together with Mini, Rush & Sharp (last RO4 finishers). You didn't ask, but Fantasy didn't enter either & Queen/ZerO didn't make it through the qualifiers.

I think last ASL was a rerun of the previous ASL 15. People had high aspirations for the previous ASL winner who couldn't even make it out of the group stages. Winning strategy is about besting the last winner's playstyle in my opinion. I think Soul Key would have it pretty rough himself since being a champion, too. Everybody would have memorised his games. This season I'm for Mini Sharp Action old school players.
