OK first off I am only equipped with a below average knowledge of the pro-gaming scene, so if I say something stupid out of ignorance I apologize.

A lot of us are thinking that this will be the last WCG (see Bleww and Travis' posts) for BW (anyone know for sure?), which afaik is the only significant tournament with foreign and Korean competition for BW. I get the feeling that it was a major bridge between Korean and Western players and without it the two will separate and as Korea is the home and major strength of pro-gaming, it will die in the West. If this happens I'm guessing Koreans will be less inclined to play against Western players.

Most of us foreign players were without a hope of becoming a pro, but because it was so appealing, the tiny window of hope was enough to keep us playing and practicing. For those of us not still competing in the WCG there is zero hope now, no matter what.

There are still the people that play for fun, but they will soon find themselves with less people to play with and the community will diminish a lot. I don't know for sure and I hope I'm wrong.

I think the only way to keep ourselves going is to do more stuff like TLT and find some rich investor who will also have to be stupid enough to invest in SC. Maybe it is possible to continue but I don't think so when we live in countries where, for some reason, they would rather watch someone hit balls with sticks and rackets than an interesting contest of strategy.

Hopefully some new game can come out to match Starcraft, but that is unlikely when most games are made for the general public to fool around in, and not progamers. If you know of any other comparable games, post a review please

If not that, we had a good time, and see you when SC2 comes out :0

Let me first start by saying you're more than likely right about SC dying. But this part of your post is kind of stupid. You seem to be oblivious to the fact that sports might also contain strategy. Especially because you mentioned "racket". Tennis is one of the most strategic sports, if not the most and I'd say it is close to SC strategy-wise. I'm not saying SC is bad, but you need to know what you are comparing it to before you try to say it deserves to be more popular than sports.
I want dat beta.

uhhh ... bw wont die anywhere until it dies in korea ... and no other game is even close to the level that starcraft is at there, no other game can even compare, so until either A) a better game comes out, or B) starcraft 2 comes out, bw will live, and i guarantee it will be in WCG04, and possibly even WCG05
I would tell you what I think of you, but I just cant express myself monosyllabically enough for you to understand me : [

WCG selects a 5 year old game, why wouldn't they go with 6? Don't listen to people quitting, they're just trying to satisfy themselves with a good excuse to do so.

As a matter of fact I give SC best chances of every game to be picked again next year as one of the WCG games.

it's been the same for years and there's no indication that this year is going to be any different. there have always been people who felt like they gave up their lives for BW and needed to quit because of failing WCG.

Ya it's popularity in wcg as well as elsewhere is too big to deny, thus it will be in wcg04 for sure. I mean why (tf) would they quit serving one their biggest if not the biggest game We have seen other countries than korea do rather good in it so korean dominance cannot be used as an excuse either
River me timbers.

a lot of people were really heartbroken by what happened at wcg. I dont think they will all quit but they will definitely take some time off from the game. im sure some people will quit after losing WCG (the thought of waiting another whole year just to go back to a best of 1 double elimination competition on terrible maps isnt profitable to most). but the game will not die.

i guarantee there is a wcg 2004. i guarantee most of the players that quit will come back next year and try again. i guarantee the pro gaming scene will not go away for a long time to come. i mean jesus christ, 30,000 people at a computer game final? thats ridiculous. this game will not die anytime soon.

the thing that keeps most people coming back is hope. if you ever read the story of pandora's box, you know that the last critter that was stopped from escaping the box was hope. if that got out (yes i know its a stupid mythology story, but it has a message) and everyone knew everything that would happen, it would be the worst situation the world could fathom. everyone would be depressed at knowing all the things they will ultimately fail in.

the hope of accomplishing something will keep people coming back. and there are a lot of people who still play for fun. dont worry, the game wont die. not yet at least. and if it does, there are plenty of other good things in life.
if you guys could use google and post direct links to the maphacks here it would be greatly appreciated. - Nazgul

SC2 will replace SC, and will be at WCG for many years. Corean companies (SC related) should try to get dsom money from Europe and USA
Taking the time to have simple fun everyday is a must for a happy life.

Just some Pittsburgh WCG statistics, both prelims combined:

Counterstrike: 1 team (5 people)
UT: 1 team (5 people)
Warcraft 3: 2 people
FIFA: 1 person (me)
AoM: 4 people

Brood war: 20+ people

more people showed for BW than all the other games combined. I don't see any reason for them to discontinue the game that is by far the most popular.

People have been saying BW has been dying for the past 5 years. Its not.

I know everyone here loves Brood War, and Starcraft has been popular for over 5 years now, and that it would completely heartbreak many people if BW were to be excluded from WCG (or WCG stop altogether).

But one very negative effect of BW has been its iron graps on the Korean gaming community and market. Because BW has been so popular for so many years, many Korean game development companies have died out. Of course, there are still good games like Lineage and Ragnarok, but many of the old school companies went bust.

People have talked about the negative effects Counter-Strike had on the game development scene. It's the mod that's keeping Half-Life alive just as long as SC/BW, and although it has done a lot for gaming (generate interest, inspire people to develop mods, etc), the negative effect it has on the industry is also far reaching.

If and when BW dies, it will be sad, but also a good thing.

Let's be realistic. Despite its lofty pretensions, the WCG is essentially still a Korean-run event. And so, until the Koreans start sucking badly at SC, I really don't see the Koreans depriving themselves of the joy of seeing a few more of their own on the medal podium.

Here's hoping CS dies a horrible death. And very soon.

Id prefer one well made game than many shitty games, Its obvious those companies died out cause they produced crap :D Gotta love this logic.

haha sad but it's true. Korea's best cs team [1v1] (I dunno about now but they represented Korea for 2001 + 2002) said in an interview few weeks before WCG Final that they are not the same level as last year and improved a lot and will do great. They couldn't even win their group =(. I believe record was something like 1-3-1.

bw had more people in STL than other games, too.

assuming WCG isnt so damn intrusive, people will always come back year after year in the USA to play (some may not if it requires lengthy drives on two occasions followed by paying for a flight somewhere). it will probably be like this since it's highly doubtful UCGA will do it next year (they signed a contract for 02/03, and obviously failed pretty hard this year) and other people tend not to be as stupid/lofty with the "qualifiers all around the US" type of bullshit.

there aren't really any tournaments year round so if you're a foreigner there's no reason to play otherwise :o
