Hey everyone. I hope you're all ready and excited for the next season of CPL! That's right the official sign-up page for CPL Season 7 is here! For those of you who don't know, the Coach Pupil League is a StarCraft community designed to help low to mid level players improve in a competitive team league format. Every season groups of players team up under the tutelage of experienced coaches and compete against each other over several weeks.
If you'd like more information you can always check us out at any of the links below. With no minimum requirement to join, and a very flexible format allowing you to choose your own level of time commitment, CPL is a great place to learn the game and get your start at StarCraft. If you already have some BroodWar experience but not sure how to improve, it's the perfect place to take your game to the next level!
*Most of the league is handled through discord, so at a minimum you will need to join us there if you're not apart of the community already

CPL strives to include as many members of the community as possible, and so in short there are three varying types of roles in CPL. Players, Coaches, and Assistant Coaches, If you're new this season you can check the spoilers below to find out more about what to expect with each role.
Players
+ Show Spoiler + Players can vary greatly in skill level, there is no minimum level to sign up as a player, but typically the upper limit in the past has been set around 1900mmr. Furthermore players are divided up into different Tiers based on their skill level - this is in the hopes of providing as close of a match-up for you as possible! So what can I expect as a Player?+ Show Spoiler +
1. The opportunity to play up to one match per week vs an opponent of similar skill/practice with teammates/coaches.
2. You do not have to participate every week.
3. You do not have to play at a specific time, but arranging to pre-play matches is up to you and your opponent.
4. Higher level players should try to spend some time assisting their teammates.
5. There is no minimum time requirement for participating, but the more you put into the CPL the more you'll get out of it!
Coaches
+ Show Spoiler +Coaches are typically very high leveled players (1900+ MMR) - those that are too skilled to participate in league play but still want to give back to the community and help it's player base grow and improve. Note that coaches are all community members and gamers volunteering their time to help! What to expect as a Coach:+ Show Spoiler +
1.To spend some time Coaching your team members/helping them prepare for their matches.
2.All teams will have more than one coach to help with the time commitment, including Assistant Coaches.
3.Full autonomy in how they want to coach their players.
4.The option to pick/draft some players to your team (not required)
5.No requirements to handle team management (line-ups, substitutions, etc) - teams will be assigned a couple of Team Admins to help with that.
Assistant Coaches
+ Show Spoiler + The Assistant Coaches fall into that grey area between coach and player. This role is for players who want to play and coach, or to just coach but maybe aren't as high leveled as some of the other coaches (and that is totally ok!) Assistant coach will only be assigned to those who want it and are able to qualify/play at or above a Tier 0 level. What to expect as an Assistant Coach:+ Show Spoiler +
1. You should be looking to help the players on your team improve.
2. If you are a player as well you'll get to play some matches and be able to get coaching from the other higher leveled coaches.
3. If you don't plan on playing in the league we may still require you to play in preseason or have some other matches/replays to confirm you're at least a Tier 0 level.
4. In short this role is unique in the fact that it's a cross between coach and player, so feel free to check out the Coach and Player roles above.
New Player this season? Check out the LEAGUE OVERVIEW in the spoiler below for a rundown of what to expect from the league:

1. Sign-ups are open for 2 weeks.
The last day to sign up will be Sunday June 13th. If you miss the sign-ups but still want to play you will be added to a waitlist.
2. After sign-ups close there will be 2 weeks of preseason games.
Preseason will begin June 14th and wrap up June 27th.
Preseason is typically the busiest time for CPL players. While it isn't mandatory to play all of the preseason games.. We would still encourage you to play as many as possible - The more you're able to play the better/more accurately we can place you in the correct Tier and team to offer you the best experience. We also use this as a way to judge player activity. Those who play little to no preseason games and DO NOT contact the league admin to let them know if they're unable to play in preseason WILL NOT be eligible for the team draft.
3. After preseason has concluded the team draft will take place and teams will be formed!
(Team reveal stream hype?! - Early July)
Once teams have been formed you will be added into a team channel with your coaches and teammates. Over the next week your team should come up with a team name and logo.
4. Regular season play begins.
The number of players and weeks are TBD and depend a lot on how many participants we get for the league, however there will be plenty of opportunities to play most weeks, or take some weeks off if you'd like! Typically this phase of the league will last 6-8 weeks. Where your team will play against a different team each week. Individual players can decide if they do or do not want to play a league match each week.
5. At the conclusion of the regular season teams will get a chance in the playoffs and eventually the Grand Finals where we find out who will be the Season 7 Champions!
(Will we finally overcome the curse of the top team this season?!)
This phase of the league comes after a week break between the season and playoffs. While this is also TBD based on player participation.. in general you can expect about 3 weeks to determine the winner!
6. Be on the look-out for some different/optional events throughout the season as well!

While it might help depending on the coach or to be able communicate and play with your teammates it's not a requirement at all and you should be fine with just typing.

Good, thanks! Yeah I meant that compared to forum posting you can't see right away who's in so far. For example some of your friends already registered and you feel like you have a shot as well (more incentives to play), and have something common to talk about and maybe prepare for preseason together. But that's very minor, maybe possible improvement in the future. So yeah let's spam CPL HYPE posts in this thread instead!

I don't want to commit to anything, I don't want any admin duties like submitting line ups, etc. I sort of want to be a free-spirited wanderer who will come and coach when I can.
If something like that sounds ok, then count me in and assign me to a team. I'll only advise Protoss players. Basically, I'd like to help but without any strings attached. But I get if you don't want to do things like that, so either way I'm good. Let me know.

Thanks for doing this again. I've just signed up. Been following SC for a long time but I've always been a little intimidated to play online. Hopefully this will give me some incentive to actually do it!

Hard to judge but with CPL I feel like it's more important to create an environment to keep players active/motivated to play certain number of games daily. Maybe actual game knowledge is more important for higher tier players who are fully invested already. Tier3/Lower Tier2 it feels if only they "played the damn game" they would improve a lot.

As an answer to your worry and also for all would be coaches, the coaches dont handle any admin duties like lineups or subs etc, those are done by the team admins.
If you want to just be helping when you can but not on a full time basis, assistant coach would probably fit the description best.
You d be looking at answering questions from lower level players (could be BOs, general stuff, micro tips, specific replay analysis perhaps) on your team discord, whenever you re available, and actual coaching in game at your discretion, also whenever you re free. Can be through 1on1 coaching, a master class or really anything you fancy, all help is welcome!

What you've described is pretty much the coach definition anyway. As Baal mentioned above all the line-ups and score reporting etc are handled by players/Team Admins on the team. So you should definitely fill out an application/sign up!
Maybe we even get some of that legendary sugo guest casting for a random cast or 2 from back in season 1

Nah, as long as the application form worked we should be good. We used to have sign-ups on here and then copied everything manually, now the form copies everything for us so Ideally it's all just done through there. You can always check the player list as well to make sure we got your sign-up. If you can find your name there, we got your sign-up!

I used to play BW UMS when I was younger, though only laddered a couple of times (and got zealot rushed). When SC2 came out I aimed to pick it up competitively, coming from a competitive background in Halo 3. I was able to make some headway, but ultimately found that the amount of time required would hinder my academic progress. I have continued to play casually, and retain reasonable mechanics ~200 SC2 APM, I have good game sense, though my macro usually slips whilst attacking or engaging in skirmishes. I recently played a BW Bo5 against a colleague XvT and was able to win the series; having taken an interest in 80sMullet, Tasteless and Artosis streams (and watching ASL) I am aware of general build orders with each race, though Zerg is likely my weakest; happy to share the replays. I play Terran in SC2 so have a good understanding of BW mech Terran, though I feel that I may prefer to play with Protoss. In general I like to play a harrass style, I feel that reaver and storm drops, zealot bombs and arbiter recalls are more appealing to me than minefields and tank-turret crawls.
I have highly demanding work commitments, I am a CTO of an early-stage start-up and am also currently finishing my PhD. That being said, I still find time to enjoy Starcraft for several hours (~8-16) each week. I would love to join CPL both for the community and for the semi-directed goal-driven activities. Having scheduled matches would be something to look forward to and I'm happy to put in the time to practice in advance for them - my competitive nature would demand it of me in fact haha. In general, having at least a week's notice would be ideal for scheduled matches, though 3 days notice is workable. I have work commitments round-the-clock so notice is important to me. I am keen to learn to play brood war and progress from acting in spectator-only mode toward a higher degree of engagement. I hope you will consider my application favourably, I would love to engage more, with CPL and the community.

I play Terran in SC2 so have a good understanding of BW mech Terran, though I feel that I may prefer to play with Protoss. In general I like to play a harrass style, I feel that reaver and storm drops, zealot bombs and arbiter recalls are more appealing to me than minefields and tank-turret crawls.
I have highly demanding work commitments, I am a CTO of an early-stage start-up and am also currently finishing my PhD. That being said, I still find time to enjoy Starcraft for several hours (~8-16) each week. I would love to join CPL both for the community and for the semi-directed goal-driven activities. Having scheduled matches would be something to look forward to and I'm happy to put in the time to practice in advance for them - my competitive nature would demand it of me in fact haha. In general, having at least a week's notice would be ideal for scheduled matches, though 3 days notice is workable. I have work commitments round-the-clock so notice is important to me. I am keen to learn to play brood war and progress from acting in spectator-only mode toward a higher degree of engagement. I hope you will consider my application favourably, I would love to engage more, with CPL and the community.

Timewise usually the default time is Sunday evening UTC, but if your opponent agrees you can preplay. There are players from all over the world though so in general due to timezones weekends are when most games get played.And yes you know the opponent and map order in advance, then you have one week to play from that point on.

Hi, I wasn't able to get the form to work unfortunately! Will that be a significant issue? I've checked the player list and it appears that although the form stated that submission had failed - my name has been added (several times! - oh no).

Yeah it was, nice catch . I'm sure you'll remember it with a little reminder.. the PvP was a pretty unique game.. The ol' 4 probe rush vs the "i'm so far ahead i'm going to beat you with scouts now because u rushed me with 4 probes" into a loss for the scout player/guy who got rushed by those first 4 probes, despite the probes going in all different directions.
