So now that Among Us is a famous game player by all human beings i wonder if anyone know of older games that used this type of gameplay?.

“The Thing” as most of you would know is a Starcraft UMS also called “La Cosa” in latin american countries, in which people join and one is randomly given the chance of being the “murder” or “the thing”, the objective is to kill everyone, deceive etc. This idea has come to Among Us which is a game everyone is playing this days.

So i was wondering if anyone here knows or can point to games that are older than Starcraft that used this idea?, or is it genuinely Starcraft the first community that created this mode?.

I need to know please, thank you.

I believe these are classified under "Social deduction games" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_deduction_game

I know the first one I played was something similar to "warewolf" where we're all villagers trying to find out which one in the group is the warewolf.

Since bw has a pretty customizable ums, those map makers just imported the idea. These types of games are older than video games in general. I doubt there were any of these types of games before 5% of the population used the internet so if you really want to dig deep you could look at early internet games around 1995 - 1999 to see if anything came before it was reproduced in bw.

Although it's entirely possible something like it was developed for early consoles that I'm not aware of. It's just unlikely because those are typically catered to 4 people.

It wouldn't work on console because everyone can see everyone else's screen. There is nothing you can hide from the other players.

The most popular "among us" type game in BW is Phantom.

This game is basically a more basic and streamlined copy of Space Station 13:

Thanks all for answering, i have been studying the subject and aparently the game genre called "Social deduction games" is as old as text only games..., have not been able to find those particular games fromt eh 70`s or so.

In another subject anyone reading this knows of a new UMS that emulates Among Us?, i know there is one for Fall Guys, but i wonder is anyone made one for Among Us already.

btw, TL has a whole mafia forum subsection, that's still active to this day. Mafia is probably the most widely known such game, and is fun to play IRL.

I've never played Mafia, but could someone explain the point of playing the game online in a forum. Without real life interactions, isn't it just a game of chance/maths like online poker but without the money?

The Mafia that's played on TL forums has a bunch of special roles that make it more strategic. Otherwise, I agree, it would be pointless.

I'd say it's a lot more analytical than in person mafia. You have 48 hour days and 24 hour nights generally, all the interactions are available to re-read, apply vote analysis and deduce (fake)claims depending on the setup. It is however a massive timesink if you take it seriously.

Anyone playing?
I'm just hanging with ppl from Reddit on discord channel and I'm getting pretty decent games.

I'm totally into the games, it's super fun but it's way more better with a bunch of competetive people + voice chat ;-)

Also Among Us streams / YT videos are awesome.

My personal fav is Disguised Toast, guy can play 900 IQ as Impostor and is super analytical.

It pays to be free and available on mobile, for sure. It certainly isn't a new concept. Even those murder-mystery parties and other such things from time before video games fall into the catergory.
