StarLadder and Blizzard Entertainment announced the 2 new StarCraft: Remastered tournaments for non-Korean players.

The goal for StarCraft: Remastered Open Series and Pro Series is to demonstrate further support to non-Korean StarCraft players by arranging a big global tournament. This means that the event will be closed to Korean players, but open to everyone else.

The tournament will be divided into two parts. The first one will be StarCraft: Remastered Open Series, where amateur players can take part. The winners of Open Series will then join the world’s top non-Korean players to fight for glory and their part of the prize pool in StarCraft: Remastered Pro Series.

Both tournaments will be held online.

Registration is open until June 27, 18:00 CEST. Registration links below:
  • StarCraft: Remastered Open Series (for players below 2000 MMR): https://goo.gl/9h75ap
  • StarCraft: Remastered Pro Series (for players above 2000 MMR): https://goo.gl/anU8pk

  • 1st place: 600 USD
  • 2nd place: 300 USD
  • 3rd-4th places: 150 USD
  • 5th-8th places: 75 USD

Schedule
  • Open Series will start on June 28
  • Pro Series Qualifiers will take place on August 3-5

Double-check the detailed schedule: maybe you'll be back when your MMR will start playing. It only starts on June 27 for 0-1200 MMR players.

Reading the rules, I'm pretty sure there's no prize pool for the Open Series. Grand finals for the Open Series won't even be played since top two players advance to the Pro Series.

As correctly suggested above, there is no Prize Pool for Open Series exept for 2 Pro Series spots.

Still the league is about to deliver much competitive fun to the players of low and mid skill level, unlike to usual tournaments, where they are getting stomped in Ro256 which is not really funny.

I suggest making the top 2 players in the "Open" series get spots in the qualifiers instead of directly to the Main Event. This will prevent abuse, and will be more fair.

+ Show Spoiler +

Has anyone even read the rules... I just skimmed them and unless I'm mistaken two players with less than 2000 MMR who get 1st/2nd in the Open series get put DIRECTLY into the Main Stage of the finals. Whereas all 2000+ MMR players have to duke it out in the Qualifiers in order to get to the Main Stage. Instead, they should put those players into the Qualifiers.

Any player that can't even get 2000 MMR taking the place of players that are much better than them at 2000+ MMR seems a bit silly. Anyone who can't get 2000 MMR will just get a quick 0-2 in the Main Stage.

The rules also state "It is forbidden to lower player’s MMR on purpose or to create a new account in order to hide player’s true level of play", but I know if I wanted to try and make the "Main Stage" I'd just enter the tournament on a smurf account that's between 1900-2000 MMR, while practicing on my main. Anyway, glad they are doing something for the community.

Summary: 16 spots in the "Main Stage," 2 of which will be given to players who (according to the rules) should be people who cannot reach 2000 MMR. In reality, I'm sure they'll go to smurfs though so w/e. I think they should revise the format so there isn't any incentive to smurf (besides beating up on people not as good as you, which is already adequate incentive for some). This has the benefit of letting the lower MMR players have a fair chance at playing some competitive games in an atmosphere that is a bit more fun that a plain old ladder game, which is what the Open Series should really be about.

Unfortunately, having rewards that are locked into "you must not be too good" to qualify doesn't work well unless we tie our accounts to our DNA/fingerprints or something, and bypassing what will be a tough qualifier for all but the top foreigners, is a huge incentive to smurf.

Ok, I'm done typing. Promise. Ok I lied, but I'll put it in a spoiler so you don't have to read it.

+ Show Spoiler +

Okay, so let's say I have 2025 MMR. Per the rules, I will get seeded in the qualifier vs the top MMR player (assuming at 2025, I am the lowest ranked entrant). So, I'll get to play 2 games against a known foreigner, go 0-2, had fun, done. Alternatively, lose a game or 2 and play in the Open series. (Assuming there are no smurfs, lulz) I have a chance to play other players that are sub 2000 MMR (instead of a top foreigner) for a chance at directly going to the Main Stage.

tldr: I think a 2300 MMR player who is willing to play in the Qualifiers deserves to be in the Main Stage more than a 2300 MMR smurf who gets in thru the Open series. Actually... I just realized, is there any real way to stop someone from competing in both? (Obviously, they would have multiple accounts, which is easy enough.) I'm taking this too seriously I guess, but I hate abuse of the system and this is just asking for it.

im hyped, will practice hard, i need to win this.
start of main stage falls directly on summer comiket, unhappy with that will it be possible to pre-play games? (it doesnt look like it...)
i also dont like the "2 max 2000 MMR players get into pro series main stage" but if you want to establish something like a 2(or more) tiered system, you have to start somewhere.

"The limitation of 12 units max in the control groups should be on. Matches without this setting are not accepted."
maybe im blind but i didnt know you could disable this...... (cant check for the next 5 days)

swiss "triple" elimination, where you are eliminated after 2 losses (not 3?)

"Maps for each match are determined by vetoes. Each player vetoes 2 maps from the map pool. The player above/on the left in the brackets starts vetoing."
veto is A-B-A-B?

i hope for no map pool change midway into the tournament.

The tournament will be divided into two parts. The first one will be StarCraft: Remastered Open Series, where amateur players can take part. The winners of Open Series will then join the world’s top non-Korean players to fight for glory and their part of the prize pool in StarCraft: Remastered Pro Series.

The open series shouldn't seed the #1000 and #1001 ranked foreigners into a tournament against the top 14 foreigners.
They won't be fighting for glory or any part of the prize pool. They'll go for a quick 0-2 and be done with it, while viewers are stuck watching one-sided and boring games.

I was thinking the same. Why not just have a finals for the Open series and leave it at that?

What are these people smoking, there is no unlimited selection setting. They must have seen the extended sprite limit setting and thought it's a toggle for SC2 mode.

Thank you, removed that

If you are playing now at 1900 MMR, register to Open Series. While checking your account, we'll see that you constantly stay at this level for a while and it will be fine. any question we will have to the players, we'll contact them via email or Discord.
I suggest making the top 2 players in the "Open" series get spots in the qualifiers instead of directly to the Main Event

Gonna consider this.

I have a general comment that I also raised by e-mail. A lot of players have legacy accounts from back when remastered started. When population was bigger, I was at around 2700~ peak, but as population started to drop I went back to 2450~ MMR. Since then I haven't played much or at all, as it's nearly impossible to find games. What I mean is, some players may register with their old accounts and mmr's that are not possible to achieve anymore.. I was also advised that if I rise my MMR that would guarantee me a spot in top8 for PRO series, but it's very difficult just because of the fact that there are no games to be found vs no-koreans at 2400+ level. Some players are using VPN to get games vs koreans, but I wasn't succesful for me so far.

Wouldn't it make sense to only look at the account that was active for last 3 months for example? Or maybe do a ladder stage like for BSL. :-)

We will definately pick the active accounts only. Ladder stage using the new accounts would solve this completely, but initially we though that it's a bad idea to make players register the new accounts and lose time raising their MMR, because most of players are adults and have things to do (work, family, etc).

Maybe we just need to set a minimum games to consider an account 'active'. Which number do you think would make sense? Maybe 50 games during last month? So players below that would have to advance via Qualifiers.

Using a tag like SL- on ladder will make it much easier for you to manage things i think. Plus it guarantees all accounts are active/new. ZZZero utilizing this simple technique in BSL was kind of brilliant.

Absolutely agree here.

There's lot of people who have 2400++ from older accounts but the truth is, getting past 2400+ now and maintaining it is really hard.

Someone could use an old 2800 account, play a few games, lose them, and still be at 2600 and would easily qualify.

I would anticipate the "top 8" will be like 2350-2550 if we're talking active and recent accounts. Though, the strategy would be to peak really high (e.g. if you get a lucky streak to get you at 2500 and then stop playing).

That's why using a new "SL-" tag might make the most sense but REQUIRE all players to get a minimum of 50 or 60 games in their accounts.

And I get it - not everyone has time to play that much for ladder. But let's be honest here - you're not getting in the top8 if you can't play at least 50 games (on a fresh ladder acct)...

I agree, and also for most of top players getting to 2400 takes max 35-40 games so it shouldn't be an issue in any scenario.

how frequently will this be held?

Future seasons have not been announced, but let's see how this one will go and how much people will be attracted.

So the price pool is equal to bsl4? And they have a pro and chobo league? Isn't it better for everyone if blizzard just becomes the main sponsor for bsl5? Maybe they can double whatever prize money zzzero can muster.

On the other hand, now we have two tourneys that compete with each other, our very own msl/osl. Blizzard needs to bring a lot though, before they're on par with zzzero.

If the organisator is anything like the organisator of StarSeries Invitational (StarLadder hosted these CS GO events) then we can be very happy and the organisatory standards and production value will be very high, Navane. I really like BSL and ZZZero, but I am also happy that we have these guys on board Let's see how this will turn out :D

I m looking at the open series as I m way below 2000 but I agree too. May be 50 is a bit high but there should definitely be a minimum numbers of games played and i think 30 is good enough.
Having to register with a new account like for bsl is good too: easy to track where you are in relation to others, easy to add friends/practice partners around your level (since you can find their accound through starlogg). It s also quite motivating as you feel you are part of the tournament (if that makes sense?), for bsl it motivated me to keep playing.
It also helps with the admin side of things.

At any case those are great initiatives, thank you!

So if I haven't played on my main account for 3 months, then I can't participate in open tournament? I don't know if I should register. I have 1997 mmr currently on my main account :D

Situation is tricky. Why don't you just play some games?

Isn't the prize pool a bit small for a Blizzard sponsored tourney ?

Well think about ROI. I don't see how they earn any money from it so be glad it is anything at all.

Maybe it's time to dust off those builds from 2000 and see if anyone falls for them :o

Well think about Blizzard getting big through their original games Diablo, WC2 and BW. I do not think they would be such a big firm as they are without these classics and hence could at least gather some thousand dollars as a multi-billion dollar company...

Not trying to be unfair or complaining here, but ye..

Hehe do it!

I've played a bit more recently than that... but it's still been a year and even then I wasn't playing that much. Might be fun.

I don't know about you guys, but I prefer an actual open foreigner tournament with a pretty good prize pool for foreigner events much more compared to all the invite only tournaments with huge prize pools in the past year.

I think everyone who still plays the game prefers open tournaments over invite only.
Well, maybe KawaiiRice and a few others would disagree

Haha I don't know exactly what this is in reference to, but I'm taking a wild guess that dt's were involved.

They should reset the ladder asap to get rid of all the 2800MMR people who played only for the first weeks of remastered. Getting above 2000 takes like 2 hours anyway.

Really happy Blizzard is supporting BW in Korea and beyond. Gives me hope for the future. I wish proleague didn't need to die when it did it's so tragic tbh.

But any way... This is awesome. I'll tune in for sure

EDIT : So there is or there is not a ladder stage? I'm a little confused by the process, Pro series will have a ladder qualifying stage?

We will be selecting based on MMR, but don't demand the new accounts for that. We'll just take the ladder stats on date, apparently on the new system already.

StarCraft: Remastered Pro Series — Qualifiers
There are 3 Qualifiers, each is a Double Elimination bracket with a rating-based seeding.
Winners of the winners’ and losers’ brackets advance to Pro Series.
All matches of the Qualifiers are Best of 3, except for the winners’ and losers’ brackets finals, which are Best of 5.
So 16 players will take part in the Main Stage of Pro Series in total:
8 players of the highest MMR
6 winners of the Qualifiers
2 winners of Open Series

Saturday and Sunday is 1 round, 4 matches per day. 4 Best-of-5's seems enough for one broadcasting day.

LMAO shots fired.

But seriously, fuck invite tournaments. Usually boring games and obviously no chance for upsets with up-and-comers.

This is dope. I'm glad Blizzard has made this initiative. I have some questions though, @kaby - how involved is Blizzard in the decision-making surrounding the tournament? Are you a representative of StarLadder and if so, are they centered in Russia?

Blizzard oversees the tournament and takes part in making every important decision. The Blizzard representee whos name is Hun Pascal Park joined both Discord channels, so everyone if free to contact him yet he has anything important to ask or suggest.

I represent StarLadder and they are not centered in Russia. Their office is in Ukraine.
