Building up to EVER OSL 2009 final on January 17, 2010 (5:00 p.m. KST) between Flash and Movie. Tracing the history of EVER OSL finals with unreleased and new footages of the past winners (iloveoov, JulyZerg, Jaedong) and commentators reflecting on their EVER OSL stories (the video is subtitled).
OGN commentator Carri - 4 EVER OSLs..and all of them were legends
[EVER OSL 2004] OGN commentator Um - 1st EVER OSL was TvT. Not an exciting matchup. But a huge audience! Carri - It was an unprecedented OSL. BoxeR who lost cried...Oov who won couldn't celebrate... Iloveoov - It doesn't really feel good... Carri - Another thing was it was the second OSL final outside of Seoul. It was a successful adventure.
Um - Thinking back, EVER OSL finals always had a huge crowd.
[EVER OSL 2005] JulyZerg - At a final, the first thing I look for is the size of the crowd...it was huge... Carri - It was emotional...because JulyZerg made a great comeback. Um - "Zerg never beats Terran" JulyZerg - The opponent was tough. I pressed the right button like I was dying. Um - Back then, JulyZerg was the only one who did Mutal-stacking. Carri - In a tough situation, how JulyZerg came back with an insane Mutal control...still vivid...
[EVER OSL 2007] Um - Jaedong was a newcomer with great future, but Stork had a greater career. Jaedong - Stork was doing great. And I wanted to face someone like that at a final. Carri - So Jaedong became the 8th Royal Roader and drew 7,000 people. Jaedong - Royal Roader is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I had a big dream. Um - Since then Jaedong has become God of Destruction and Tyrant. Carri - How his coach cried is vivid. Jaedong - My team was born in a tough way. So it was my personal and team's happiness. That's why my coach cried a lot.
[EVER OSL 2008] Carri - The biggest issue was a Zerg's first Golden Mouse. Um - JulyZerg had lost by 0:3 twice. That's why he knew how to pull the match. JulyZerg - I had a scenario: if I win the first set, I win by 3:0. Um - Many thought BeSt would win. JulyZerg - He was insane. Incredible pose. Carri - It wasn't JulyZerg's prime - slump, briefly changing team to SKT. JulyZerg - It was a tough time for me. I even thought about giving up. Carri - He made a comeback when the time was tough for him. Um - It felt that JulyZerg broke down the entire system of SKT. JulyZerg - I didn't really care. But I thought, "What a fate..I'm not for SKT..." I didn't think about Golden Mouse. I just wanted to be at the final.
Jaedong - It seems like yesterday when just being at OSL was an honor....and I'm already an OSL champion...It was marvelous...it was what has driven me since then... JulyZerg - OSL is the greatest stage. The greatest place. The greatest players. 3 Golds is an amazing thing. "I'm the true winner. I'm the true champion," I thought as I lifted my hands.

Poor Movie.
And why wouldn`t a victory by Movie be epic? On the contrary, it would be made all the more epic by the fact that it would be a victory over an opponent that is currently considered practically unbeatable. It would be akin to GARIMTO`s victory over BoxeR in the SKY OSL, when Boxer had just won two consecutive StarLeagues and looked unstoppable (although, to be fair, GARIMTO had won a StarLeague himself and was the best man for the job at the time). Also, it would fit with the theme of this OSL, since this StarLeague was filled with upsets.
Movie finds himself in a similar situation Jaedong did in the EVER 2007 finals, facing an established opponent at the top of his form in his weakest matchup. While he is a good player, he will have to do the same thing to his PvT that Jaedong did to his ZvP....learn it right in front of our eyes.
Overall, I will be rooting for Movie. Not just beacuse he is a prospective player, the underdog in this final and a Protoss, but also beacuse it would be priceless to see the reaction of StarCraft fans if he toppled all the expectations of a Flash victory.
I'm on Movie's side as the underdog, it'll be amazing if he wins. Beating Flash at the top of his game at the OSL finals will probably be the crowning achievement of his life, and we'll be lookin' back at him and saying, "Damn he was good." Or that "He just cheesed and won Flash should've been him/Flash was so tired they put too much work on him/<Insert complaining excuse here>" for all the haters ;P
Nice vid, thanks a lot for the translation. It almost made me want Flash to win the finals since he deserves that legend status that the 3 predecessors have

TvP is not Flash's worst MU for no reason.
That is a poor excuse, considering Flash once dominated in TvP and also beat a really good PvT player to achieve his first StarLeague title. It is more likely that his TvP is not as good as before simply beacuse he has been more focusing on TvZ/TvT.

It is more likely, but not true. Flash has been working to revamp his TvP play for months. Excuses like that, that players are simply focusing on the other matchups, to explain away their weakest one never works.

The "imbalance" excuse works even less, primarily since preety much all TvP balance arguments do not apply at such high levels of gaming. A D level Terran can make the excuse that TvP is hard....Flash does not have the same luxury, especially considering his stellar TvP track record in the past.
At least the "primarily focused on TvZ/TvT" argument is supported by the fact that last year was overall not very good for Protoss and that Zerg have mostly been dominating the scene. So it is not a stretch of imagination to think that TvZ was a much bigger priority then TvP.

LoL.
All players have a worst matchup. The difference comes in the fact that for S-class players, a "worst matchup" still means that they have a well over 50% winrate in it and are still better at it then most of their A-level peers.

That was produced by OnGameNet--so yeah, it's Korean.
See how all the previous Ever OSL winners were not the favourites to win. Boxer was expected to beat Oov (and win golden mouse), not too sure about July but I'm guessing noone saw his muta micro coming, Jaedong was an underdog against Stork and Best was expected to go macro mode on July and crush him. Pattern?

I don't like the balance argument either. I said explicitly in my previous post that I consider what you said more plausible (that he was focused on the other matchups). However, I highly doubt that's true either.
I buy the (commercially-driven) hype. The past EVER OSL's WERE amazing - and we have a good matchup for the coming finals - Flash vs Movie - the first that I've been excited to see in awhile.
I hope the games pay off, and Movie doesn't simply get dismantled by Flash.

Yup TvP is Flash's 'weakest' matchup despite dominating BeST who has one of the best PvT in BW and recently defeating Stork who also excels in PvT.
Lets not forget Flash's TvP was considered the best in SC, his Bacchus 2008 OSL run in 2008 is proof of that. Lets face it, Flash doesn't have a weakness against any three races. Also the 2007 EVER OSL is a bad comparison because Stork was known to have terrible PvZ at that time.

Pretty sure everyone knows what you just said. But if you really had to pick one out to call it his weakest matchup, it'll be his TvP, both statistically and in actuality when you compare his TvP games to his games involving other match ups.

Flash's TvZ was his weakest statistically until this season when he's been playing zergs nonstop. TvZ imo was always Flash's weakest MU and sometimes his TvT doesn't look unstoppable either.

BeSt was one of the best PvT. Now he is still in long slump and appearance in MSL Ro8 is fluke. Stork played in a relaxed manner and was pushed by Flash using map imba (Tornado cliff). That wasn't skill game. Also Flash is training like crazy for 2 SLs and Stork is relaxing playing only on proleague.

....Did you read what you just quoted? I said that Movie is facing a tough opponent in his (Movie`s) worst matchup. The comparison comes from the fact that Jaedong`s ZvP was not very good prior to the EVER 2007 finals (it was his worst matchup at the time), since he lost to the likes of Rock.
That is why I said Movie will have to do with his PvT what Jaedong did with his ZvP in order to win....learn it right in front of our eyes.
EDIT: Basically, I was talking about Movie, not Flash.

I think its less of that its Flash's lesser match up, but more that its his opponents better match up.

Jaedong had terrible ZvP before the finals. Like one of the TL articles described, Jaedong learned how to ZvP IN the finals.
This video should be a reminder for all that Julyzerg is the a god amongst zerg players.
Before his Gillette victory the swarm had no gold medals in individuals leagues since the very first OSL. After his victory is that the overmind started to collect gold in both leagues.
I've been hoping Movie would do well for a while, and I'd be absolutely thrilled if he won. However, since my absolute favorite player is in the MSL, I also am rooting for him. Basically, I want Flash to win either the MSL or OSL, and JD or Movie to win, since they are my top two favorite players.
Movie needs some more practise before he can cope with a wonderkid like Flash. But I think that movie got alot more imagination and creativity than Flash. Unfortunatly, one of Flash's biggest strengths is the way that he cope with everything, both unexpeded and standard.
Man i felt bad for movie... i mean he really did nothing to Flash. He definantly tried with his recalls... but he was just waisting units ... FLASH was a beast. Cant wait for these finals!!
