Be there.
Hi TL! I'm a relatively new member who is now a huge fan of pro sc. My friends and I keep thinking how great it would be if you could go to a bar and watch live sc instead of football . So I am investigating putting together a party / event for anyone who wants to watch starleague finals with a crowd instead of on their computer at home. This could be anything from a projector at a hotel conference room, to using a nice flatscreen at an amenable restaurant or pub, or possibly renting a theatre for the stadium seating and epic feel. Of course there would be pro team swag to be raffled off and other side events and such, for in between games. This is what I need to know:
1. First of all, how can I find out when the OSL and MSL finals are scheduled? Do they not even schedule them this far in advance? If you know specifically with a link, that'd be great. Otherwise camping fomos for info. (Thanks nevergg.)
2. Is this something you are interested in? Do you want to come meet other players and fans, and cheer for your hero? Would you rather have a casual or formal (put-on) event setting--tables with food? LAN in the background? Seats in front of a big screen?
3. Would you be willing to pay an admission price in order to facilitate a badass venue and other amenities like food and drinks? Would you go for raffle tickets for gaming gear or pro team swag?
If you are in the San Francisco bay area and you're into this idea, speak up! If you feel like you could help organize something awesome and memorable, PM me. I want to make this happen on as big a scale as can be supported, and I think we can shoot for epic. What do YOU think?
Updates:
-FastEddieV's interest survey from page 3. If you live here please vote. And please don't if not, obviously : )~
Poll: Would you attend a Bay Area meetup? (Vote): I'm there! (Vote): No way!
-If someone is willing to host at their place for reasonable numbers, you can PM me or post it. I think house is good for 20 or less, and I think we'll surpass that. Also, organizing into someone else's house is awkward. Currently I am pursuing meeting spaces for large group awesomeness.
Clarifications:
-This won't be at a bar or other age exclusive venue, and there won't be alcohol. This is definitely meant to be for anyone and everyone.
-If it's at a theatre or such, it will be an open event I guess, but it's not being advertised anywhere but here on TL so don't worry about exposing your nerdiness in public; you will be among comrades. ; )
-Much later on there will be a new thread with event info. Until then, all suggestions, support and needs are wanted and welcome!
|
I am definitely interested in something like this, I think that it would be a lot of fun to get a theater for the full effect, any idea how much that would cost? Has anything like this been tried before? I'd be more than willing to help put this together if you let me know what you've done so far.
I would be willing to pay an admission price, but probably nothing over $20.
|
I'm down as long as it's not a ZvZ.
|
Damn. I'll be in SD for the finals, but I'm moving up to San Jose in the summer '10.
Renting out a bar or something is ok but I prefer the more intimate environment when someone hosts it at their house. But that's mostly because I feel really uncomfortable about being in public and probably wouldn't attend at a public location. I wouldn't pay over 10 dollars. It's best to do a place that isn't 21 and up also since a lot of TL are around 16-19.
|
@ Orbifold: Yeah I worry about these things. : )
@ Dr.Helvetica: That's a good point. It will definitely not be age restricted. I agree that house party is comfortable. But I am excited by the idea of esports out in the world, an emerging part of culture. Hopefully we can strike a balance. Do you know exactly when the finals are btw?
|
I don't know. Sometime in January probably.
|
That's what I've heard but I can't find specifics anywhere. Kespa website has only a few weeks out.
edit- re: location: It's not determined yet but for ease of transportation it probably won't be IN the city but nearby, considering UCB is a center of TL activity in the area.
|
|
Is there a theater in berkeley that is known for doing either local events or is available to be rented out for a reasonable price? We probably also have to deal with the time of the event. OSL finals last season were at 2 am PST right?
|
Theaters are not open that late....mercado 20 in santa clara sometimes past midnight. Maybe some random hole in the wall theater. I think most people rather have it at someones house...or a rented hotel hall/room or something like that anyways...so its only TL people and everyone is more comfortable.
idk be down as long as its under $25 or so. im in santa clara/san jose btw.
edit: hopefully there are some other 20 somethings that show up lol. I dont want to be the only non 16 year old.
|
I vote for San Jose area! I'm down too, but yeah.. for me it really depends on the matchup and the date of the finals. I think I'll be able to pay maybe $10 for this event.
|

ZvZs are fun to watch come on now, they may be short but they're full of action

Can i get a ride down to SF i live in Seattle :O
|
Hey, I'd be down. I live in the bay and go to school in Santa Cruz and me and by bro are always doing something ourselves anyway.
|
Fuck yea, I'm down. I'll be able to drive by then. I live at San Jose so about an hour drive to SF, except not a bar. It'll rather be hard to get live stream of sl finals in a bar.

In San Diego, Semioldguy basically rented out a pizza parlor to watch the OSL Finals (Fantasy vs. Jaedong). There were like 40-50 people there. Day 9 even commentated game 1 live. It's doable if you have enough interest.
|
I am in the south bay area, definitely down for any SC community events.
|
@ falcon913: It's Berkeley, there's gotta be places like that, right? And the timing is a good point. I bet a friendly owner would extend hours for a special event.
@ TOP: That's great to hear. I'm thinking along those lines, or something mimicking the actual event, with a stage/audience dynamic. And if any ladies attend I promise there won't be any roving cameras to watch out for.
@ the San Jose contingent: If we don't hear from Berkeley / Davis / Sacramento people I will strongly consider a more southerly location. Santa Cruzians are nice to have too! ;D
If this starts at 2am as usual, will people be okay driving home? Is this a concern for anyone? Personally, I will have too much adrenaline to sleep anyway.
|
Definitely would come to this kind of an event if this goes down! There are a lot of TL members and SC fans in the area, so if this gets publicized we'll need a pretty large venue. I know a lot of people who would be willing to attend an event like this.
A house would be nice but I don't know if anyone would be willing to lend their house especially if a lot of people want to attend. I have a projector that we might be able to use if we don't find anything else (it's not great but it works).
I'm not sure when the finals are but they're probably on the TL calendar. Prefer Berkeley / SF area. I will pay a small admission price if it is required, but anything too high ( >$10) would prefer deter many people. Raffle tickets would be fun and exciting Hope this happens, and if you have some questions about TL in the Bay Area you can ask me or a lot of other TL members, there's quite a few LANs in Berkeley every year.
A TSL finals would be fun too haha
|
If only if we have something like this in NYC area... T_T.....
|
I'm in San Jose and would definitely be down for joining in for anything like this. I don't mind chipping in some for the venue also, though as many people have mentioned, it'd probably be best if we don't have it be too expensive. Seems like Berkeley would be the best place since the South Bay is pretty much shut down after 11pm.

Traitor...

Us DC folks are going to work something out as well. Rob and I will figure it out.

For all the San Jose people, we could probably carpool. I wouldn't mind being designated driver. Also, I forget, but are finals usually on Friday or Saturdays? If it's Fridays, I might not be able to go because I work Saturdays.
Edit: Also, I'd be willing to shell out anything under $40, as well as bring some beer/food for people to share.

The first people to show it on their schedule will be Fomos, swiftly followed by TL. Expect to see the date appear a couple of months in advance and the location to appear at the end of the month before it happens/the beginning of the month it happens.

I'm in the southern part of San Jose, I'd probably come if I could get a ride (and i didnt have class at 8 am the next morning).
|
Im down for a berkeley event, and am willing to pay anything around 10 dollars. Im not sure if there any any venues in berkeley that are open that late, but the recently opened shattuk hotel, is very nice and they might have space (dont quote me, but it might be a possibility)
|
You could probably rent a room on campus. It might not be the warmest, or most intimate social setting, but it'll get the job done. It'd also probably be the cheapest, especially if Superiorwolf has a projector.
|
A room on the campus would make sense. I'd be willing to host something in my apartment, but I doubt my downstairs neighbors would appreciate that. I'll see if I can find prices for hotel conference/event rooms in the area.
Any UC Berkeley student know what the procedure/cost is for reserving a room for this?
|
Guys, you do know a majority of us are under 21. -_- I wouldn't mind drinking booze if you guys keep quite about it, but bars are no no.

Haha don't worry, I'm your age and I'll go.
|
Most of the people who go to the Berkeley LANs are college age plus, although that still includes under 21 (and myself, still in high school lol :D that doesn't keep me from going to LANs all the time, they're really fun)
|
Having hosted a couple of similar things in Australia, house parties are a really good way to do it while avoiding any sticky issues surrounding things like liquor licensing.
I know that semioldguy and Diggity have been known to have live Finals parties somewhere in SoCal (SD?) but I'm not sure where or whether they're planning anything for this set of finals.
|
I have an HD projector that is available for an event like this, or a 42" plasma depending on the venue. I'm definitely down to be a part of this. I live in Santa Cruz also but I'm willing to travel as far as Sacramento if I have to. My vote is for Berkeley Area, because it's pretty central.
I'm willing to pay around $20 for this event. I like the idea of renting a space, like at a hotel or something. Someone mentioned taking over a pizza joint... that sounds fun too.
Moletrap came to the Berkeley LAN last month, if we want commentation he might be available. Nice graphic by the way EatthePath.

I was thinking, my parents live in the East Bay, about 15 minutes east of Berkeley. Depending on the weekend we could use their house, if that's the direction this event takes. Depending on the weekend we probably wouldn't have to worry about my parents being there either. Also depending on how many people would be coming. I could accommodate about 50.
|
Honestly, I wouldn't offer a house that wasn't my own for a party full of internet strangers. It just seems like a bad idea. Mind, this is just a warning. I have no problem crashing your house.
|
Haha I don't think Starcraft parties are the type that get too out of hand. I wouldn't expect more than a couple bangs of zergling rushes and maybe some nerdrage every so often!

I considered that as well. I'm waiting to see how the venue conversation pans out. I'd rather people know there are options, than abandon the idea all together. I also met many of the SC community folks at LAN before time, and I agree with Superiorwolf. Not the craziest folks. Still, my preference is conference room or restaurant... which I'm looking into now

I sense it will be a TVZ for the final. and its obvious who the T and Z will be.
Anyways I am in the SF area. I am interested even if I have to pay a fee.

TL San Jose represent! I was just talking about doing something like this on the IRC chat a few days ago. It's a great idea. Berkeley, SF, San Jose, they're all good locations. Having someone host the event at their house is the best idea, though, as long as we're not trying to cram 100 people into some downstairs livingroom that fits 10 comfortably. Maybe a tally of prospective attendees is in order?
Poll: Would you attend a Bay Area meetup? (Vote): I'm there! (Vote): No way!

Wow. So many San Jose TLers! Does anyone go to SJSU?
|
I didn't realize there were this many of us either. Last time someone tried to organize a bay area LAN there weren't that many responses from San Jose people.

San Jose would be great. I have three more friends willing to show up from there.
|
I'm curious as to how you would actually go about getting the games to the venue. would you hope there was a dish network with the ogn channel there and you could get it onto a bigger screen ? or would you just stream them from a computer to a larger screen ?

Right now the only method I have is use an online stream. I'll be looking into satellite tv too. If anyone can give me pointers that'd be great.

OGN is an International upgrade to the Dish Network. You have to have some minimum service bracket, and if you do you can add the channel on for $4.99/mo.
[Edit] I also have an account at OGN if that helps; the direct stream from their website.

I used OGN's rtmp stream at Blizzcon and it looked fine on a projector.

you know, you can just copy the poll to the OP.

laptop->projector, using OGN's official rtmp stream. if you go look at the blizzcon pictures there's a picture in there of the screen we were using.
|
It's super easy. Anything you can play on your laptop screen can be projected.
Aers, are you planning on attending? I'm curious about the screen you used.

San Jose please! I am in Sunnyvale so anything near there would be great.
Edit: (I'm only in the Bay during winter break.) If I can come I can bring my projector, which is pretty awesome.

I would come for sure if it was in SJ (and not a ZvZ). This is exciting!

Wow lots of San Jose people still. Would you guys be more willing to come to Berkeley if there were available car pools?

It's ridiculously hard to find a venue willing to help you with this at 2am. I organized the nerd gathering at Blizzcon and we ended up paying over a thousand dollars for a convention center room at a hotel. PM me if you want any advice, but using internal connections is definitely the way to do this - if you take it to the competitive market everyone is going to end up paying like $50 cover.
That being said it was super fun

What if we were able to get someone to sponsor the event? Like Eudomonia in berkeley, that's where the LAN on the 19th is being held, I wonder if they would be willing to help us out at all.

That would be awesome. Could help with venue, or swag. I think it might be helpful to see if there is anything on campus that could work for a venue. I'm messaging some of the folks from the last Berkeley LAN. If anyone has any info that would be nice

Does anybody have a farm whose barn we could use? ;D
However it works out I want as many people as possible to come. Any admission price will be as low as possible, definitely not over $20. In fact, if you guys have friends who are not dedicated starcraft fans but might enjoy coming, see if they would be into it. Economy of scale and whatnot.

Well for all of you who live in San Jose, or the Bay Area, be thinking of a venue for an event like this. A rec hall, a university lecture hall, anything that might be suitable for a Starleague final.
Last OSL final was at like 2am, but are they always that late? I'm a bit new to pro sc as well . Has there been a final at an earlier time? I'm asking if we should just assume it will be at 2am, or if it may be different.
|
Sounds like fun. I'm up for this.
|
bump.
is anyone willing to host this? the finals for osl/msl are coming up soon. it'd be best if there was someone who has access to some university rec hall and has a projector. i'm from san jose and i'm willing to pick up people on the way there if rides are needed.
|
reading the thread again, looks like there are a ton of people who live in san jose area. that seems to be the best location for this. either that or one of the people from berkeley can host.
the osl finals is next saturday night. anyone up for hosting?
|
I think nobody's home will be up for hosting.
|
If I lived in the area, I would easily pay $10 for a cool place with food and booze.
No booze = no go
|
Re-Bump for this. Does anybody still want to do it? If we're going to use a room in Berkeley, somebody has to go check out the room soon. If not, we have to find a different venue that will be open at midnight.
|
HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS ITS IN THREE DAYS? I DIDNT EVEN KNOW!
OK LET'S GET THIS STUFF ROLLING!
Three days until grand finals, Saturday 16th it starts at 12:00am Sunday so it's not that late which is nice
Anyone have a house? I have a projector not that great We can look for lecture hall in berkeley I will ask around if anyone can get one for us venues are pretty unlikely at this point
|
hey im there if we get a venue, and am willing to pay around 10$ if needed, so yah
|
if we cant get anything to work we can delay it by a day or a week or something and just make sure no one has watched the games or read about them. that's how they did it in DC for their meetup
that would solve lag issues with the connection and other possible problems... also we could have better time like at 7 or 8 pm.
|
yah i think that would work out better for alot of people, i would still like to watch it live though well yah if we can get a place, and by friday people want to go i would be totally down for it
|
just have it in berkeley. rooms are free, and we can get a room easily with a projector.
|
i'd also prefer live. berkeley would be good unless one of the many san jose people are willing to loan their place. as i said i'd be willing to drive some people from san jose to berkeley if needed.
also it'd be nice if someone could loan their place in berkeley instead of having to use university property. then we can have booze =o. maybe someone lives in a co-op or somewhere with enough common room?
|
i would loan my san jose place but i share it with 3 other roommates. they will not like it :/
|
I'm ready to chip in money and to help organize. Tell me what/when/where.

QFT. I wish someone had a place.
And when I say I'd totally be down, that means I would bug my parents until they want to kill themselves.
So jealous of everyone going to one of these parties.
|
seriously, if we have it in berkeley, u can watch it and then drink afterwards.
|
K the likeliness of us being able to get a berkeley room is decreasing, but I will try and call around and ask. We could just skip OSL and wait for MSL (which might be even more epic finals)... an alternative is eudemonia which has a package deal for the whole room (they have a big projector) and drinks and food and stuff. We would need to find out how many people we could get though.
Hopefully we can do the OSL still though... keep checking

|
yO ^^ It's me again, Scan. It's ok that u hate me or not. I'm thinking to go SF bay. Tell me the date and time to come at there. and Superiorwolf. I pmed you last time to go Berkeley LAN 2 party and you never replied. I live in San Jose so I can get there easy ^^
|
omg scan yah come dude but yah eudi would be a good option but will probably will cost some money for people but im getting the general feeling that people would be willing. i think we should get a headcount today or tomarow, to see how much we could raise. although a hall at Cal or a house would still be the best option imo
|
Too short of a notice at this point. I vote to wait for MSL.
|
I can try to see how much it cost to book a room for San Jose State since a lot of us are around San Jose area. What do you guys think?
|
i'm still down. just post here with enough notice for me to get there and i'll be there.
|
I'll be spending the early part of Saturday watching football playoffs (go Saints!) but the evening is still open for watching the OSL. Someone figure something out or I'll be forced to buy a 12-pack of cheap beer and have a solo party D:
|
so anyone up for MSL finals??
|
Bump again. Can somebody from Berkeley book a room? If not, I can try to organize a really small gathering (5-10 people) in San Jose to watch the matches. I was thinking a hotel room or something, as long as we can keep the noise down. I'd offer my studio, but I don't think my neighbors would appreciate it.
|
I'd be down for either Berkeley or San Jose and I'm willing to throw for a hotel room.
|
Bumping in hopes someone get's inspired!
|
the meeting should probably be in San Jose, Berkeley, or San Francisco
