The University of Chicago StarCraft Club (MICRO) is holding its quarterly StarCraft tournament next Saturday, November 7th, and if anyone in the area (from nearby universities, or the greater Chicago area, like from our division in CSL+) would like to come spectate, you are all more than welcome to come drop by, grab food, watch some SC, and chat with our special guest...
...because CholeraSC will be there, IN PERSON, commentating for our tournament. Games will be projected live on a projector, there will be tons of free food (lunch or dinner, anyone?), and after the tournament ends, we will also be playing our CSL round against WashU. Yes, Cholera of Voice of eSports fame is flying in specially that weekend, so it'll be a great chance to see him working in person and, of course, to meet the man
Unfortunately, we won't be able to include players from other schools or the community in our tournament bracket, but if you want to bring your laptop and gaming gear and play friendly games with us after the tournament (or during, with people in the audience or players taking a break), we won't stop you.
Finally, if you are unable to make it that day, don't despair.. because the next day, the "StarCraft Professor" from UC Berkeley will be giving a small StarCraft lecture/workshop. Cholera will still be there (but probably just chilling in the audience). This event is open to everyone, once again, especially if you want to participate in the workshop afterwards.
For more details, or if you have any questions/comments, email uchicagomicro@gmail.com, or starcraft@uchicago.edu. Also, if you email us, we'll better know how many people to expect and accommodate, and we can give you further details closer to the date (like directions how to get there, which building, etc etc). And you can RSVP for the workshop.
Hope to see you there at our campus next weekend!

What fame as VoE gotten again?
Good luck with the tournament! It's always fun to meet fellow lovers of the game and play each other. What does the winner receive other then bragging rights?
|
Wow...! That's really cool that you're having an actual big event with different things... sounds like a mini convention almost.
Does mean no class at Berkeley next Friday (the 6th)??
|
Haha thats cool ... meet Cholera in person :D

Hey, so I'm the MICRO prez/co-founder, and in the past when we've done this (this is our second year as a recognized student organization; we started up last fall after getting approval in the spring), the winners (first and second place, and of each pool when we get enough people) have traditionally gotten a small monetary prize, and 'fame forever' in the tradition of Iron Chef At our spring tournament last year, we had a pretty big turnout though, and I also ordered trophies for the winners. This year, depending on how many people turn up we may have some additional prizes, but it's a secret for now... I'm just happy that CholeraSC agreed to come and commentate for us, it was very kind of him, and I hope other people will be excited about that too!
I hope more people from the Chicago area will show up that weekend, it's going to be a great two days (email if you want more info, or think you will come for one or both of the two days! ^^).

The real question is who is the Head of Esports (HOE)
|
WashU has a CSL team? Shit, no one told me >.>
|
Interesting, since as far as I know Cholera so far has been pretty protective of his real life identity. Looks like he has changed his attitude towards the future as commentator?

For the Sunday lecture/workshop, there will be two 90-minute lectures, one on Build Orders and the strategic use of randomness to create strength. We'll be discussing at length the game theory and statistical implications of different build orders on different maps. The second will be on Scouting and information control, both the purely theoretical and the practical in terms of scouting techniques and examples.
If you have any topics you (Chicagoans) want to talk about, send me an email at integral.king@gmail.com and I'll see if I can prepare something for you.

we can only pray

Youtube is such a funny place to get followers... those people are insane sometimes...
|
There will be livestream and I'll try to find people with nice cameras to take photographs and record the event. And I will of course meet all of your fanatic expectations and personally make sure that it is as awkward as possible for Cholera, seeing as how I will probably be the only female participant there who actively plays StarCraft. <333
If you think you will be coming, please email one of the above email addresses, or PM me on here. I will then send you back directions, times and a more specific location regarding the tournament and/or talk.
(also it really helps to get a headcount... worst fear = 9001 people coming and not having enough room for them all)

OK. From now on I will work my butt off to get into University of Chicago. I know I said this before for Washington, but I just changed my mind and now I want Chicago :D

For people coming only on Sunday for the SC Lectures/Workshop, this is the tentative program so you can make advance travel plans (as 10:30 might seem a bit early?) :
Start: 10:30 am First lecture: 10:30 am - 11:30 Q+A: 11:30 - 11:45 Lunch break: 11:45 - 12:30 Second lecture: 12:30 - 1:30 Q+A: 1:30 - 1:45 Workshop session: 1:45 - 2:45 Closing remarks: 2:45-3:00
And @ illu, Chicago is worth it just for the SC cakes and cookies :D
|

Well I look a little bit more than cookies. For example research fundings (which I can spend on cookies), academic reputation (which will allow me to find a better job with higher pay, which turns into cookies), strength of the department (again, better job => higher pay => more cookies).

I've gotten replies back from a couple of people... which is great - but if you expressed interest in coming and haven't emailed/PMed us about it yet, please do so! Do it for the StarCraft cake, kids
See you a week from today!

An email I got from U Chicago about my application today. It's pretty awesome. Oh btw... if anybody here has a job in the admissions office at U Chicago you should PM me.
Top Ten Reasons You Should Turn In Your Early Action Application on Sunday
1. Dean Nondorf wants You! To apply to the University of Chicago.
2. Winter will be SO MUCH WARMER, comparatively. To January 20, 1985.
3. You can't get into college if you don't apply!
4. Turning in a college application is a time honored All Saint's Day tradition.
5. Procrastinating is only cool and fun once you're in college.
6. You are one step closer to winning a Nobel Prize! Or at least closer to people who have won the Nobel Prize.
7. If you turn in your application early, Jon and Kate will a) get back together or b) stay divorced. Choose your own adventure!
8. Every time an Early Action application is sent in, a fairy gets its wings.
9.That Hogwarts letter isn't coming. This is the next best thing.
10. You send us an application, we send you cookies. (Note: The University of Chicago cannot guarantee the delivery of any and all baked goods to applicants.)

Nice tournament but im highly disappointed that only your university gets to play.
|
Our club has two focuses - one concentrates on our role within the UChicago community, and the other upon the greater StarCraft community. Because we focus a lot on CSL matches and the relationship with other "skilled" players, a great majority of our students often assume that MICRO is just a feeder into intercollegiate matches. To appeal to more UC students, the tournament this quarter was designed to be a UChicago player only event and to draw people who normally don't play because they fear they aren't good enough. However, we wanted the tournament to remain open to people outside of the university to spectate if they wanted to (because of CholeraSC's visit, and because of the lectures and workshop the next day by the SC Prof).
However, if there is enough interest, and if people want to plan with me, we can start hosting tournaments open to all of Chicago and surrounding vicinities.
And I think a lot of people from other schools who are coming down here for the weekend are content to just watch and have fun in the audience. You are welcome to bring your laptops and play during/after the tournament, but I don't think it would be feasible at this point to change the structure and focus of the fall tourney. Sorry! Next quarter we'll plan something fun for everyone

I watched part of the livestream (had to go out to have dinner with some peeps), but I hope someone took creepy stalker photos of Cholera for those who couldn't be there in person. Preferably "every square inch of his body" lol.
